Hey all,
I am a senior in college and have to write a 20 page paper on an event that took place between 1600-1800 in America.
The two topics that interested me the most were the American Revolution and Ben Franklin. I decided to pursue a topic on the American Revolution and the question I have decided to go with is "How/Why did the British lose the war?"
I am a European History major and so the American History stuff is giving me a problem. I have months to do this assignment, so I am trying to compile books/research now.
Do you American Historians have any advice on books I can check out for my topic or advice on a different, perhaps more intriguing topic?
Thanks in advance.
Above is my my reading list so far.. I am also waiting for "The Men Who Lost America" by O'Shaughnessy

I always hear about the United States impinging upon treaty provisions with Native Americans and was wondering: Has there ever been a "good" or successful treaty that has held up to this day?

What were exchange rates like? If an empire was successfully repelled by one of its colonies, would the colony keep using the empire's currency? How did people exchange currencies before modern exchange rates were invented?

I know that there are some considerably powerful women in Norse mythology, but also know that a culture's mythology can often almost directly contradict the reality of their society.
So, how were Norse women treated? Were they still thought of as mere housewives like women farther south?

This may fall under a more religious board, but I was in a discussion about Jesus' teachings vs. the Pharisees. Now from what I understand, the Saducees would be considered more conservative, the Pharisees more liberal. But from what I gather, the message of the Pharisees seemed to run with the base of Jesus' teachings (aside from the fact that he was proclaiming himself the Son of God, if indeed he actually did so).

If this happened, what was the reaction of the western governments? How were the spies treated when they arrived in the USSR? Have any spoken to the media about it?

I'm currently reading Richard J. Evans's "Third Reich" series of history books on Nazi Germany. It talks about Hitler invaded Sudentenland, Poland, Austria etc. Often claiming to be invading to protect local Germans.
But the book says nothing about any Nazi plans to take over/annex Switzerland. Lots of Switzerland is German speaking, so wouldn't the Nazis have viewed them as "Germans" (right?) and want those Germans to be part of the single german state? Ein Volk, Ein Reich and all that.

I know of American stations like CONELRAD, but I can't find any information about Spanish (specifically in Mexico) broadcasts.

Previous weeks' Tuesday Trivias and the complete upcoming schedule.
Today’s trivia theme comes to us from /u/vanderZwan!
Nice simple theme today: Hair. What was doing with ‘dos in history? The Zwan was looking for interesting trivia about baldness in particular, but you’re welcome to talk about hair or not-hair, whatever suits your mood.
Next week on Tuesday Trivia: Lost and Forgotten Foods: foods we no longer eat out of personal taste, or foods we no longer eat because they’re extinct!

I have just started watching Hell on Wheels and it has piqued my interest in American history around that time. I am Canadian and do not know too much about American history besides the tidbits I read on here. The series takes place during 1866 and onward as it follows the trials and tribulations of setting up the Union Pacific Railroad.
The protagonist, and many other characters, are seen drinking bottles of whiskey at a time. I would like to know if we have any information on what the ABV% would be like during that time period. Was whiskey as strong then as it was today? Or were they not making it that strong?
I am aware the characters' large consumption of alcohol may be because it is a TV series, yet I am still interested on knowing what the typical bottle of whiskey would have contained in terms of alcohol.
Cheers!

We know stories about people in the Soviet Union or in Germany where they were constantly trying to flee the borders/walls to get into the capitalist society. How often the inverse happened? Did communist countries were open to receive people willing to support the regime or they were closed to receive just like the way they were harsh to accept people leaving?

In public discourse about the “Wild West” a large number of people are referred to as “Outlaws”. In Australia, during approximately the same period, outlawry was declared by judicial action under the “Felons Apprehension Acts” as declared in the colonies of New South Wales and Victoria to combat bushranging. It required that for someone to be declared an “Outlaw”, a Supreme Court Judge first issued a bench warrant for the arrest of the suspected felon, then caused a summons to be published in the Government Gazette and distributed. If the accused was not in custody on the date specified the judge could declare him an outlaw, and if the Governor of the colony with the advice of his Executive Council gazetted the declaration of outlawry any person could apprehend the outlaw and if the outlaw was killed in the process it was justifiable homicide. Also anyone identified as providing any support to the outlaw by providing him with information, food , ammunition, clothing etc. could be imprisoned and forfeited all his property whether or not the outlaw was found guilty of any crime..
Was outlawry in America defined the same way or is it just a general term to describe a suspected criminal?

Reading about WWII and Italy's involvement it seems to be a failed offensive after failed offensive... Greece, Egypt, etc. Did Mussolini force the Axis forced to spread themselves too thin and did this have a great effect on Germany losing the war?

EDIT: There's a passing mention to it in Mark Edward Lewis' history of the Tang and something a bit more detailed in Dieter Kuhn's history of the Song. They talk about people amputating part of their bodies for some religious purpose.

Why would the nazis keep so few offical documents and go to such trouble in hiding the extermination of the jews? Even going to the trouble of dismantling camps in some cases like Belzic?

Hey, I'm a undergraduate student of European history and I could use some help with a paper I'm trying to write. This is my first time working with primary sources.
The topic is prostitution in Madrid during the reign of Joseph Bonaparte. ¿How did France's occupation of Spain affect the practice of prostitution, if it did? (crime, legislation or public opinion)
The angle: The French Revolution changed people's views of their rights, liberties and their relation the state (for example, Civil Constitution of the Clergy, conscription and price controls). Prostitution was regulated in France under Napoleon.
Problem: I am having a hard time finding primary sources to use for this topic.
Can anyone recommend a possible source I could use? For examples: the writings of a writer or reporter that lived in Madrid during the Peninsular war, laws that where passed during the time, newspapers, police documents, autobiographies, medical documents (possibly of the military), etc.
I have tried Spain's online historical archive, http://pares.mcu.es/ but I'm not sure how I should go about my search (cant' find what I'm looking for).
Things I wish to keep in mind (if anybody has suggestion for these topics please mention them): -laws regarding prostitution in Spain before the Peninsular war -women's legal and illegal labor market (working conditions and pay)
[I can read Spanish but not French]
