Why wasnt there more sea trade and exploration along the african coast before the 15th century ?

crossing an ocean in the unknown towards the unknown americas i understand as being shyed away from.

but just going south along the coast of africa past mali is something that would seem reasonable enough to do for civilization like the romans or vikings or karthage.

i mean you keep in sight of a coast... thats reasonable safe isnt it ?

Were there any examples of 'special forces' in Medieval and Ancient times?

Are there any records or myths of a Medieval or Ancient equivalent to modern special forces? Defined as small groups operating outside of the main army, specialized in high risk operations such as infiltrating enemy camp, neutralizing high value targets, such as commanders or siege engines, supplies or horses?

Did armies in that time period ever regularly conduct precision skirmishes, aiming at such important targets? Were there any units especially trained for that purpose in war?

Is history worth pursuing as a major?

I'm heading into college next year and I want to major in history. However, many people (including my parents) have told me that graduating from college with a history major is useless and there aren't many job opportunities. I really want to major in history but if there isn't a secure future in it, then something along the lines of engineering would be a more logical and smarter option. After having a discussion with my parents, I thought 'Why not ask the historians on reddit?' Here are some questions on my mind:

  • Is history worth pursuing as a major? Is it worth doing something you love over something you have to do?
  • What happened to after graduating from college? Did you find a history related job or a job that you wanted right away?
  • What are your current salaries (if you don't mind saying) and how long did it take for you to get to where you are now?

Thanks in advance!

What areas of history remain unstudied or unknown to us?

It seems to me that the real mysteries of history now lie with the pre-written language era, but are there areas of 'modern' history that we still haven't put all the pieces together for?

How prosperous was the United States of America compared to European nations before African slavery.

Obviously, free labor had to have played a huge part of America's growth but where was the USA's standing compared to the world. Also what were the nations of Africa's standing during that time? How did Europeans view both U.S.A. and the nations of Africa during that time?

At what percentage were ships lost voyaging over mediterranean at the time of Egypts third kingdom?

I read from somewhere, ( could have been the prosaic The Egyptian by Mika Waltari) that almost half of the ships at that time were lost on the seas. I don't think that this would have been economically viable though as ships cost a huge amount of money/furs/beer/caps/huge stone wheels.

Could someone help me identify this bayonet?

http://imgur.com/a/koKSY Here are some pictures of the bayonet and serial numbers on it. There is also a "b" at the very tip of the scabbard.

I think it's German and from World War I, but I'm just guessing. Any info on it would be greatly appreciated.

Why were the international soldiers who participated in the Spanish Civil War, to fight fascism, upon return home (to the US and Canada to be more precise) investigated by their nations and not allowed to serve in WWII?

I was doing some reading this afternoon about all of the international soldiers who left their homes, from places in Europe and the Americas to help the Spanish people against fascism.

Interestingly enough, Canadians and Americans were investigated by the FBI and Mountie Police for their war collaboration, and in both nations those who were involved weren't allowed to serve their nations in WW2 which followed a few years later. This seems odd to me, because those international soldiers left their homes to fight fascism, and then they were barred from doing so in actual war a few years later. This confuses me.

More convenient sources than wikipedia?

hi group! over the past while, I've started to do more and more reading more and more on what has been an otherwise dormant interest of mine: european history. wikipedia is, obviously, and excellent source of reading, but I often find that their articles have almost TOO much information, if that makes any sense. it's hard to get a good summarized write-up on a given topic. by the time i sort through the dozens of references in a given article, i usually end up on such a tangent that i sort of get lost trying to give perspective to the topic i was after in the first place.

i'll be honest, /r/askhistorians - im a little drunk right now, and so i really dont know if im getting my intention across clearly here, but im sure that someone here will pick up what im putting down...

p.s. - love this sub.

When was the last time in the United States that people widely felt like the economy was great, instead of some version of "the economy's bad right now?"

I really am curious if there was a time when things were the opposite of how they are now with regard to public feelings about the economy, and advice doled out based on those feelings. Certainly not within my lifetime! It's hard for me to even conceive of how society would operate that way, which I suppose is what makes it such a fascinating historical question to me.

I was reading that Monaco's House of Grimaldi has existed since the 1200's, are there any other monarchies that have stayed in existence for longer? I don't care if they're no longer politically significant (like the British monarchy), just that they are still recognized by the populace.
