Books on Rome

I am not sure if this is the place for this. If it isn't, sorry.

I am very insterested in Roman history, but unfortunately it wasn't taught in my school, as I live in Brazil. I currently know mostly about the army and military tactics, and the early republic.

What are some books that are good for someone who knows almost nothing of the Roman Empire?

Was there ever an attempt or movement to rebuild the temple in Jerusalem within early Zionism?

Pretty much as the title says. I'm happy to clarify the question. I expect that it is not now (if it ever was) a popular idea by any means, which is why I qualify it with "early", but any discussion would be of interest to me.

Since most cultures have a flood myth, can it be assumed that there actually was some sort of ancient, greatly destructive flood?

Is it possible that there was a great flood in the ancient world that inspired all the flood myths? Or is it likely that no such flood ever happened?

What happened between The British/French/Spanish abandonment of the Falklands Islands and Britain's re claiming of the Islands that gave Argentina such fierce claim to them, and what drove them to eventually attack the 5th most powerful nation on earth?

Rephrased from a previous post, this time serious answers only.

What drove Argentina to claim a set of disputed (even back then) islands that held little to no strategic nor economic value?

It has often been stated that The Islands would have been seeded to Argentina before the Falklands War, and that Margret Thatcher had genuine plans to negotiate the "return" of the Islands, Did Argentina know this and if so why did they still invade?

How did Celts end up in Anatolia? What was their purpose for migrating so far? Who did they displace when they settled down? Why couldn't anyone stop them?

Also, is there any recommended reading for Germanic/Celtic/Slavic, etc. migrations prior to the fall of the Roman Empire? Or also including during and after the fall of the Roman Empire, if there are no books that cover specifically before the fall.

Did Ancient Egypt leave the world any mentionable heritage? (like greece or the ancient near east)

I haven't really dug much into ancient egyptian history because i've had the impression of it as a relatively isolated culture that didn't leave the world much of a heritage (besides the obvious...) Now that's just my untaught impression; could someone point something out for me?

Why was Germany unable to capture Moscow in the Fall-Winter of 1941?

What were the major factors? Some suggestions could be the prevalence of horse transport in the German infantry, the lack of winter clothing, the rain in the Fall 1941, soviet reinforcements taken from other fronts, a larger number of Soviet troops than Germany expected, the delaying battles by doomed Soviet forces in other cities. Any other factors? What factors were less important? How has the relatively recent opening of the Soviet archives changed historian's perception of this battle?

Could Hitler have taken Moscow if he had 'focused' his forces on that objective, rather than attacking everywhere in Russia at once? How could the German Army have protected the flanks of the attack if they chose to focus on Moscow?

I understand that Hitler believed the 'Soviet system' would crumble and the country would fall before the winter (hence the lack of winter clothes boots and the like for the infantry). What was the basis for such a prediction? Why was Hitler wrong?

Is this the wrong forum for this question? Too many questions? Has this discussion already happened in the sub before? Thanks! (BTW, I am no 'Nazi apologist', just interested in the area).

What is the difference between the Four Temperaments and the Four Humors?

Upon reading about them, I see no clear distinction between them aside from the fact that Hippocrates made one and Galen made the other. So, how are they related and what sperates them from one another?

Why did pharmacies/drug stores become associated with soda fountains and ice cream?

I was reading a book earlier on Shiseido cosmetics and learned that the founder installed an ice cream soda fountain in the original Shiseido pharmacy. He was inspired by the drug stores that he saw in America.
Reading up on this, I read that soda fountains and ice cream were popularized around the turn of the century and pharmacies were one of the more common places to install them. And sure enough, I can still remember the local drug store selling ice cream in my childhood in the early 80s.

But...why? I can understand a little parlour, candy shop, department stores, or train stations but...it seems odd to go to the local drug store to get your novelty ice cream soda. Was there some special relationship between the two industries?

If Ashkenazi Jews had a strong presence in Germany circa the Early/Middle Ages and then in the Enlightenment, to the point where one of their main languages (Yiddish) was an upper german dialect, why were they excluded from the "völk" and attacked through völkisch antisemitism in the 1930s?

Before the Black Death I believe many Jews occupied the regions of southern Germany and Austria. These areas today are more conservative and I assume were generally the more conservative at the time, and thus must have influenced their tolerance of them in some way.

At the time there presence was met by ambivalence, but a presence they had indeed. Through Charlemagne's canonical law they were employed diplomatically and financially were usurers(which I realize was considered sinful, however these services were still utilized, and they were thus able to roam freely among the country).

They also tend to assimilate into whatever region they go. Sure there were heavily jewish communities but I imagine many were dispersed throughout urban areas?

It seems, according to wikipedia they still held a large presence in the 1700s and onward. Influencing such areas as the arts. Some of the offshoots of their enlightenment also gave way to extreme assimilation. Why would nationalists oppose this?

Did any of the antique/medieval people try to build "tanks" in order to fight phalanxes?

The pike men phalanx was used quite a bit in the antiquity / middle ages and my question is did anyone try to counter them with "tank" like "vehicles"? Perhaps some sort of wooden cart in front of two oxen, with some sort of armored box to protect the oxen and the "driver". Something like a mini siege tower maybe.

Are these real Roman techniques?

Well, AskHistorians, before I get too excited about this video currently moving up /r/videos, tell me if it's actually Roman techniques. I don't care that it looks choreographed; I just want someone who knows what they're talking about to tell me if I'm looking at something historically accurate and, if so, to explain some of the maneuvers and whatnot to me.
