I'm curious as to whether there's any good literature out there on what the post-WW2 transition in East Germany was like for the German population. I confess I don't know a lot about it. There was a lot of enmity between the Germans and Russians that likely carried over from the war; I know the Soviets were particularly incensed when the Kennedy administration proposed placing tactical nukes in West Germany, under German control. How were the Germans treated by their conquerors? Was there much discrimination? An insurgency?

Hey! I am reading this book and sometimes I have a hard time understanding it. Do you know any books like "study guide" or "study manual" that help to explain some of the stories and help me better understand it? Thank you.

What side did he take? Aaron Burr was never convicted of the crime so I am wondering how Jefferson handled it since Burr remained the official Vice President.

I know they created Hadrain's wall to establish the boundary between Britannia and the Scottish people but was there any reason they did not try to invade Ireland? Did the Irish people have strong allies with the Scottish that wouldn't let the Romans attack or was Ireland so unimportant for them?

I was looking at a map of the Crimean peninsula and was surprised to find many ancient Greek colonies dotting its coasts. I had previously believed that the Greeks had been confined to the Mediterranean. This leads me to the question, what is the northern, southern, eastern and western extent of peoples who would identify as "Greeks" before ~400 B.C. ?

not including the supernatural animals that pop up the bible. I mean stuff like elves and such.
basically I want to know if there was a time when most sane adults really believed in all that stuff that inspired most western fairy tales and fantasy stories

In the opening scenes of 12 Years a Slave, Solomon is seen dining in a good quality restaurant with the two men who accompanied him to DC.
Would this scene have been possible in Antebellum America in Washington, DC? Or would most restaurants have refused to admit black patrons--even if accompanoed by whites?

Most of us are familiar with the WWI & WW2 action movie cliche of a soldier yelling "medic!" (or "Sanitäter!") under fire and being patched up with bullets whizzing all around. In general, did soldiers respect the red cross armband and hold their fire? Was it considered bad luck to shoot one? And was the casualty rate of combat medics significantly different to general infantry?

Hello AskHistorians. I work as an aide in an Elementary School (Grade 5) and our students are being assigned explorers to report on. The reports are pretty neat, they are in the form of an interview that the students write. I'm encouraging them to get creative and make it something like "Conan O'Brien interviews Henry Hudson" to get them engaged.
Anyway, I told their teacher that since the kids are having some trouble conceptualizing it, I would come up with an example for us to show the class so they could better understand the assignment. Since the curriculum consists of a bunch of Dead White Guys^tm I'd like to feature a female explorer or navigator to blow their minds. Any idea?
TL;DR: Can you suggest any female explorers or navigators I can research and present to a 5th grade class so that they learn that people other than Western European men helped shrink the world?

It's a common trope that paranoid schizophrenics are worried about remote surveillance - cameras, microphones, etc.
What were some common persecution delusions before the invention of those technologies?
Has there historically been any cultural consciousness of paranoia or common perception of what a typical delusion was?

Im curious as to which countries chose to back the Union and which countries chose to back the Confederacy. Were there vested interests in those countries based on choosing to back whatever side they wanted to? Sort of like how the Western World backs the Syrian Rebels and Russia/Iran back the Syrian Government.
How did the American Civil war affect the global economy back in the 1860s? Such as in Europe, China, Africa and South America. Was Canada affected at all by it?

Was it a single country or a coalition of independent realms? Were these realms considered kingdoms, duchies, states? Who was in charge of them? Did the Holy Roman Empire act as a single entity? Like if there was a war going on, would the entire empire be at war, or only participating states? How powerful was the HRE compared to other European powers? Thank you.

I was watching Rape of Europa this morning, and while this question does not really have much to do with the documentary, it just kind of got me thinking. I was just wondering how Hitler and the Third Reich felt about America and how that was projected onto Nazi Germany. I tried to search around and see if this has been covered at all and didn't find anything, but if it has I apologize! Just point me in the right direction, if it has.
