What is the legitimacy of the Documentary Theory?

I've been hearing a lot of back and forth arguments between some scholars, historians, and theologians in regards to the Documentary Theory, or the theory that the Pentateuch had many authors. I know it's a very tough argument for either side however I would love to hear your opinions on this argument?

Sorry if this has been posted before!

Did Americans drop the 'U' from colour, or did the English add it in?

Just something that I've always been interested in knowing! Also, why do they have different words for the same things, like highway instead of motorway, and garbage instead of rubbish? There are more but I can't think of them right now.

Did police in Nazi Germany carry guns?

In numerous books I've read about Nazi Germany I have come across the concern that existed with maintaining the German Army as the "sole bearer of arms" (and hence the concern with an armed SS, or SA). Did police in either The Weimar Republic, pre-war Nazi Germany, or during the war carry guns? I know that until recently UK police didn't routinely carry guns, so the idea of an unarmed police force is not that far-fetched. If by "bearer of arms" what is meant is heavy weapons, then how was this distinction drawn - who as allowed what?

How common was the practice of adoption in samurai households? What were the implications of adoption?

I've been reading Musui's Story: The Autobiography of a Tokugawa Samurai, in which Katsu Kokichi is a low-ranking samurai adopted by the Katsu family in order to marry the only Katsu daughter. How common was this practice of adoption in samurai households and what were its implications? Did this affect the schooling, occupations, status, etc. of the samurai and his spouse in this society?

Nikola Tesla and Thomas Edison, why did such a massive dichotomy grow between an inventor and a business man?

My understanding is that yeah, Tesla was smart and people like to feel like they identify with someone who is misunderstood, and want to stick it to the man by rejecting the business sense of Edison. Tesla could come up with some ideas, but it was Edison who can make new trends.

What is the history behind what makes Edison this super bad guy, and Tesla this misunderstood genius?

I also remember reading somewhere that this Tesla hype is courtesy of "geek" culture trying to identify with unsung heroes and corporatism is evil or whatever, but I'd like to have the record straight for my own benefit.

Within the last 200 years, were women considered 'large' today considered attractive?

I've often heard it said that our modern association of attractiveness with skinniness is a particularly new conception. It is said that within the past 200 years in western societies, large women were considered attractive as the ability to overeat was a sign of wealth and social status. Is this true?

If not in the last 200 years, has there been any point in human history where skinniness has not been associated with attractiveness?

Were female jingoistic poets unaware of the atrocities soldiers endured in the First World War?

I've been writing an essay about literature during the First World War,and this has been bugging me so much. I just simply don't understand how poets such as Jessie Pope etc, could be so ignorant to the fact that they were urging young men to run headlong into their graves. Were they aware of their actions? Did they know and just continue writing? Or were they just totally ignorant to it all?
