How were migration ships going back to Europe used?

Although some immigrants moved back to their home country, the flow of traffic from Europe to the Americas between 1850 and 1930 must've been very lopsided, and at the same time the liners advertised how comfortable their ships were, so I'm assuming they were not very good for hauling goods.

So what were they used for? Did they run empty? Could a poor person travel more comfortably if they decided to go back?

In World War 2, there was much air combat above populated areas. What happened to all those bullets? Were there many incidental civilian casualties?

Most machine gun bursts didn't hit their targets - but they had to land somewhere. I've read a lot of WW2 history but never heard stories about where those bullets ended up. Are there any known incidents? Were many stray bullets erroneously put down to the enemy deliberately strafing civilians (which did happen deliberately as well, from both sides)?

What were Winston Churchill's views on socialism?

I ask because there's a quote floating around the office from Churchill, "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." Even though I'm not sure if that's a real quote, I would not be surprised if it fairly represented him. But a quote needs context, so I turn to you guys. What were Churchill's economic views?

/edit While trying to do my own research, I think "socialism" may have a different meaning in 1940s England than what it would mean to modern American conservatives like my officemates.

As lay-person, how can I get the most out of reading books on history?

So, the title should be pretty self-explanatory. I've recently become interested in history, and even more recently have moved on from reading wikipedia summaries of events and getting books that seem well received on the topics that interest me.

However, I've become very aware through this subreddit, and the wonderful /r/BadHistory that it's very easy for non-experts to get the wrong end of the stick when it comes to history. The reasons tend to fall into 2 categories: they either oversimplify history, perhaps getting their historical knowledge from over-simplified sources, or they're too easily swayed by the ideological bias of their sources. I find myself quite susceptible to the charms of an easy-to-swallow (a)historical narrative, and of course I want to put that right.

So I'd just like some tips really. I don't know if it's even possible to get a balanced view as a lay-person since you guys obviously spending your professional lives comparing tons of sources trying to get the most objective picture of what really happened, but any advice would be great.

Also any advice about how to read unrelating to bias and balance would be equally welcome, any useful tips for taking notes or whatever.

Why were music videos in the 1990's so frequently filmed in black and white?

This might just be me, but it seems that music videos in the mid 90's were very frequently filmed in black and white.

Some famous hits like "Linger", "Insomnia", "7 seconds" and "Wonderwall" were filmed like this and those are just off the top of my head. Two hits from the Prodigy were filmed like this during that period as well.

Was this just fashionable among directors or was it a part of some larger artistic movement at the time?

EDIT: It's very apparent in this video for example.

Hey guys I have a question about the rise of the islamic empire.

Please answer this is quite important to me. How did the geography of the Islamic Empire make it spread faster/easier. Any aspects that may have caused islam to grow faster to do with the geography (trade routes, the way the land was laid out...etc) Thank You.

Why did Malcom X hate JFK?

Perhaps hate was a strong choice, but after reading briefly about Malcom X and his departure from the Nation of Islam, it appears as though he really did hate the guy - he's quoted as describe JFK's assassination as chickens coming home to roost.

It doesn't quite make sense to me, but I'm also very disconnected from that period of American history. Does anyone have more information about the context between these two important men?

Why did the British turn towards Africans as a source of labor when they could've enslaved the indigenous population as the Spanish had?

How has the British military changed since the early/mid 1900's?

I am curious to know how they changed as they lost territories/colonies and fought in other wars.

Have they become more strict? Less strict.

Are the punishments for breaking the military law less sever? For example, disobeying orders and stealing from the military/where they are stationed.

etc.

How accurate are popular conceptions of Native American cultural relationship to the environment?

They seem highly romanticized and overly homogeneous to me, but I want to check that assumption. Also, I'm curious about more than just their cultural understandings of the environment, I'm also curious about what material impacts they had on it.

Thanks for your time.

Was the modern Greek language influenced by Latin?

Based on wikipedia, modern Greek developed directly from ancient Greek. However, modern greek has some words and phrases that are very similar to romance languages. During the time of the Roman Empire, when both Latin and Greek were spoken, did the languages "merge" in any way?

I could be horribly misinformed about any of the assumptions I made in the above paragraph, so feel free to correct me.

Books about the history of medicine

I was told by r/medicine that this subreddit may be able to help me

Does anyone here have any suggestions for good books about the history of medicine? I've already read "Kill or Cure," and I liked it, but it felt superficial to me. I'm not necessarily looking for one single book. A number of books about different period in history would be fine too. I'm not really interested in Victorian-era medicine, more so ancient medicine through the renaissance period.
