Hello!
Doing some research into my local area and came across an interesting bloke, conjurer and showman Daniel Gyngell. Long story short, this guy is one of the last showmen of the era in England. He is a death defying acrobat and firework maker; and he gets his kids involved to boot!
Anywho; early on in his career he inherits what I understand to be a travelling circus of sorts. I found a picture depicting a stall of his at Bartholomew Fair. I just want to know what on Earth is being depicted in 'Gyngle's Grand Medley'. I have found that he was involved in puppeteering and automata, which is my best guess.

Hi there,
I would like to ask you about paper cartridges with matchlock muskets or muskets in general. Were the paper cartridges used in the era of matchlock muskets? Did soldiers put a rest of the cartridge in the barrel after pouring the gunpowder?
EDIT: Did those cartridges contain a ball or did they have contain gunpowder only?
Thank you

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Imperial Japanese aggression in the 1930s and 40s was not the equivalent of a "Crusade" for Buddhism and Shintoism.
Do we know how the Buddhist and Shinto religious authorities reacted to the news of such atrocities? Or did they never find out until after the war?
Also, did Buddhism and Shintoism play any role in post-WWII Japan's longstanding denial of its atrocities?

In 1960s, the USD/DEM exchange rate was stable, hovering around DEM 4=$1. But in 1973, DEM/USD exchange rate dropped below 3 (1973 DEM 2.659=$1), and in 1995, it was even below DEM 1.4=$1 at times, and at the time of virtual changeover to Euro (12/31/1998), it was DEM 1.67261=$1.
And in 1965, the Deutschmark was at 0.17% the fourth largest reserve currency in the world after USD (72.93%), British pound (25.76%) and French franc (1.11%). But by 1975, GBP had fallen to 3.42%, while DEM at 6.62% had risen to second largest where it would remain until Euro changeover - almost hitting 20% (19.83%) in 1990, and at the time of changeover in 1998 was 13.8%.

Now I know that same sex intercourse didn't have the same social and cultural connotations as it has today. But how could Alexander's sexuality be described?

I'm aware there were tanker ships, but did were they designed with large internal tanks to be filled up, or did they simply hold large numbers of oil barrels?
How were large quantities of oil transported within the US, for example - were there pipelines or was it mainly something like rail?

It’s incredibly confusing when I’m trying to get a understanding of what the actual value of money was from the past and people use inflation as some sort of yardstick. You’ll hear
“and that would be 3500 in 2021 dollars”
But you can’t just take an arbitrary amount and inflate it to show how the value of money, I’m assuming that it’s the equivalent to having 3000 dollars in Sydney is going to be far different then having 3000 dollars in rural India.
So why haven’t historians or economists devised away you can translate the value of what say one dollar was in the mid 1850s and make it comparable to what we can buy today?
Thank you and apologies for my poorly worded question I’m not sure how to articulate it better.

I’m just wondering how none of the people Rome gave complete power to didn’t abuse the power and go past their term limits until Julius Cesar became dictator.

I am interested in how XXX came to be promoted in either publications or on-premises. What was the origination of these letters and did the significance evolve over time? Were there other means of advertising sex work before 'XXX' ?

Any crusades are a suitable period.
Did jews view crusading christians as invaders? How did they express their views politically? Did they respond in any way or support either side?

Did the British Royal Navy plan/attempt or succeed to aggressively use their aircraft carriers to bomb German naval bases in Emden, Willemshaven and Kiel etc? It sounds like it could have been a great way to negate the threat or the Kriegsmarine and their uboats had they succeeded.

There's a common trope of the female sex worker in the wild west (complete with what she might've looked like, where she might've worked out of, etc.). I want to use this as a jumping-off point for male sex workers in that time/place:
I did try a quick google search, and most results are simply people asking the question without a lot of answers. This article is quite interesting but talks about homosexuality rather than sex work.
NOTE: this is a repost of my previous question at the direction of a mod, where I used the word 'prostitute' rather than 'sex worker'. thanks for the feedback! a lesson learned for me, and a great reminder about being careful about language.

Is the title of "The Father of History" deserved?
How accurate are his writings about the Achaemenid Empire, most specifically about Cyrus the Great?
If what Herodotus wrote about Cyrus the Great is accurate, what explains that Cyrus freed the jews of Babylon?

Hello, I was in discussion with some people on discord today, we were discussing political ideologies. My ideology fits into the "egoist" category and someone commented on one of my points that Stirner was of imagination by Engles. I am doing an investigation on this subject and I wish for some insight/direction.
Thank you and I wish myself a pleasant evening

When reading about the Three Kingdoms and Jin dynasty/Sixteen Kingdoms period, I noticed an increasing trend in the usage of two syllable given names. I know two syllables family names were a thing in the Three Kingdoms and prior (Xiahou, Zhuge, Gongsun, etc.) but rarely were there figures with two syllables given name. During the 4th century, many noteworthy figures of the time had two syllable given names such as some members of the Wang clan of Langya, the Zhang clan of Former Liang and other prominent officials such as Liu Laozhi, Yin Zhongkan and Yang Quanqi. By the 5th century it seems to have been a normalized thing. Why is that so?

I am currently doing research on the United States during World War 2, and while researching the basic training program and Officer Candidate School, no matter where I look I cannot find out which divisions, unit, corps, etc. was in charge of running it. If someone could help me that would be great!

It's very common to hear of Greeks in mythology being descended from the Greek gods. But how often did this actually happen in Greek society? Were these claims ever challenged and how did it affect concepts like paternity for monarchies?
I'm mostly curious for the Classical period just because we have better records but I'm also interested in the Ancient Period as well if there is examples outside of the mythos.

With the recent explosion of pirate shanty's, it made me wonder if all the stories you hear like Moby Dick in conjunction with those songs have any truth to them?

It is one of the best imo. The amount of effort that strangers give in answering questions is not paralleled in other subs.
Superbly altruistic and represents the best of Reddit, if not the internet as a whole.
Thank you to mods and contributors, you make my (and others hopefully) life better.
