What was the balance of Monarchists vs Republicans in the American colonies before the American Revolution?

When I say Monarchists, I'm not just talking about British Crown Loyalists but the educated and uneducated supporters of Monarchy in general.

People who would have preferred a King if America or any individual colony gained independence.

We see monarchist in Mexico with the establishment of the first Mexican Empire and the Brazilian Empire. Not to mention the several European realms created in the 19th century; arguably the golden age of Monarchy and in the short lived kingdoms in WWI, the last hurrah.

So were there American Monarchists beyond just loyalists before the War? And did the bickering of the Confederation make more or less Monarchists in the American educated elite?

Were the Kulaks in Soviet Russia considered an ethnic class?

I’m reading Gulag Archipelago and Solzhenitsyn talks about how one of the wave of arrests in the 30’s specifically targeted the Kulaks. He compares this to Hitler’s targeting of the Jews and calls it an ethnic catastrophe. However after googling this I don’t see any reference to the Kulaks being an ethnic group, they were simply farmers who had over a certain amount of land and livestock. Is this an error on Solzhenitsyn’s part or was there some ethnic correlation within the Kulaks?

Best book for reading about 200-300 years that preceded the Peace of Westphalia in Europe?

So I just finished an excellent book by Tim Blanning titled Pursuit of Glory covering years 1648-1815. I liked the writing style (still academic but enjoyable to read to layman). I also enjoyed the breadth of the book from agriculture, transport to courts to hunting etc.

Could anyone recommend a similar book covering period say 1348-1648 or 1484 to 1815?

How did enslaved women dress in the Islamic world? Were there laws that prescribed what they could wear?

A broad question given the distances and time but an ex-Muslim acquintance of mine argues that Muslim jurists forbade enslaved women from wearing veils/clothes and that they were forced to walk around topless or nude in public.

One thing i've been told is that the Awrah (the area of your body you must cover in public according to islamic law) is from knee to navel if you are a enslaved woman as opposed to the entire body except face/hands/feet if you are a muslim free woman.

Quotes and Sources:

  • Mujahid said: Ibn Umar passed by some people trying to buy a slave and they were kissing her. When they saw him they stopped. Ibn 'Umar came and uncovered her leg. Then he pushed her breast and said, "Buy" And Mujahid added: Ibn Umar put his hand between her breasts and then shook them (Musanaf Abderrazak Al-Sanaani, Volume 7 page 286 Tradition 13202)
  • Umar once saw a slave-girl that belonged to us (to Anas) wearing a scarf, so Umar hit her and told her: 'Don't assume the manners of free woman (Musnaf Ibn Abi Shaybah, Volume 2 page 41 Tradition 6236)
  • Ibn Jourayj said: A trusted person told me he heard Ali asked about the slave, is it possible to look at her leg, and buttocks, and at her belly ?. He said: "There is nothing wrong with that, there is no respect for her, she stands so that we can negotiate her price" (Musanaf Abderrazak Al-Sanaani, Volume 7 page 287 Tradition 13208)

Supposedly Umar is one of the most important people in Islam as i've understood as he took over leadership when Mohammed died.

  • The Prophet (ﷺ) stayed for three rights between Khaibar and Medina and was married to Safiya. I invited the Muslim to his marriage banquet and there was neither meat nor bread in that banquet but the Prophet ordered Bilal to spread the leather mats on which dates, dried yogurt and butter were put. The Muslims said amongst themselves, "Will she (i.e. Safiya) be one of the mothers of the believers, (i.e. one of the wives of the Prophet (ﷺ) ) or just (a lady captive) of what his right-hand possesses" Some of them said, "If the Prophet (ﷺ) makes her observe the veil, then she will be one of the mothers of the believers (i.e. one of the Prophet's wives), and if he does not make her observe the veil, then she will be his lady slave." So when he departed, he made a place for her behind him (on his and made her observe the veil.

  • We stood for some time in this sorrowful market and saw the mournful, or rather terrifying, handling of people. For when a person wants to buy a person, male or female, he enters the building and considers those for sale, which [of them] pleases him. [...] and then he also strips [him] of his clothes, noting all the members. He considers how modest [he is], how timid, how happy, how sad, how healthy and whole. There, which is shameful to say, the genitals of males and females are handled and openly shown in the presence of all. Also, nude and cut by whips, they are compelled to march, run, walk, and jump in the presence of all, so that it becomes manifestly clear which are sick or healthy, male or female, virgin or corrupt. If they see them blush, they take up position around them striking more, cutting with sticks, buffeting with fists, so that he would do thus in a forced manner what he blushed to do voluntarily in the presence of all.

Questions concerning the History of Paleontology [for a nine-year-old]

While I realize that questions regarding paleontology might be better posed to other subreddits, I'm hoping that the moderators and Redditors of this community will indulge me.

My nine-year-old niece, who for the past four years, something her mother calls an eternity in kid years, has never stopped letting us all know that she is going to become a paleontologist. Recently however, she's been going through a bit of a crisis. She had the epiphany that by the time she's grown up, all of the dinosaurs might be discovered and there won't be any paleontology jobs left for her.

When my sister shared this new development with me today, the first thought I had was about women like Mary Anning or Sue Hendrickson but I couldn't think of very much else. I'm hoping that this community might be able to point me, and my niece, towards other women who have helped pioneer paleontology and the stories of their lives. I would also very much like to find and share sources with my family about the ever-changing nature of paleontology through the years.

Thank you for any comments or advice and Happy New Year!

How did Britain maintain it's empire?

Given that Britain is a fairly small island, with presumably a relatively small population, how was it able to supply enough military power to establish control over its territories? Was the British population more dense than the size of the Island might suggest? Was military power needed to maintain control over its all territories at the same time?

I'm currently studying the "rise" of the Third Reich, and I cannot for the life of me understand the why's and how's of Adolf Hitler's supposed "charisma." Can somebody give me some insight?

Title. We've all seen it before: footage of Hitler speaking at various rallies and party events. He's animated, raving mad, maniacal, shouting, loud, and generally sort of "crazy" looking. I thought "surely this is taken out of context. there's no way his entire presentation could be this crazy." So I started digging around and seeking out various speeches and memoirs... As far as I can tell, Hitler only ever had one speed during his speeches: "raving mad man."

So what am I missing here? Nobody in modern American antiquity would consider Hitler's presentation compelling. Typically, a charismatic and dynamic speaker knows when to "dial it up" and when to be more subtle and reserved. Yet everybody seems to unanimously agree that Hitler was a "charismatic and brilliant speaker." Is this a difference of culture? Is violently flailing about, fist shaking, and shouting more acceptable in German culture?

I was shocked to learn that Hitler even went so far as to hire a drama/acting "coach" to improve his presentation. Look at this: https://allthatsinteresting.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/looking-scared.jpg

Before the events of 9/11 occurred, how prominent were the Twin Towers as a cultural symbol?

(I'm an American who was less than a year old on 9/11)

It's difficult for me to comprehend the sort of emotions that people experienced during those events. I understand that the Towers were important, but I'm unable to feel their importance in the way that I could if I was older. For instance, the Empire State building (in my mind) is the nost prominent symbol of New York as an icon, currently. Did people feel a similar way about the Twin Towers pre-9/11? And, if that is the case, did the empire state building only BECOME such a prominent symbol after the events of 9/11?

Edit: Maybe to be more clear, what cultural symbols that exist today do you think occupy a similar level of importance to the Towers? My goal in asking this question is to be able to understand the events of 9/11 on a more human level.

How related were British Enclosure and the American colonists' strong desire for independence?

In American Colonies: The Settling of North America, Alan Taylor writes that, "In western lands, the Americans meant to reproduce a society of family farmers endowed with household independence, which would postpone the dreaded emergence of a propertyless proletariat of white people.” (last page of ch. 18)

Reading this, I was reminded of Enclosure - and it occurred to me that maybe the vociferous drive for such household independence in British America may have been fueled by the recent history around British Enclosure. Is that how it worked and/or has anyone written about this before?

How to get economics in historical context?

Hey there, I am getting into history and it seems to me that economics is one of the if not the most important factor in geopolitics, therefore geopolitical history as well and I only understand economics at a very base level. So I wanted to ask, is there any way to understand the economics required for 'getting' historical economies without studying economics outright? Do you have any good books, websites, or any other media on the topic?

Why aren't symbols of the Empire of Japan stigmatized like Confederate symbols and symbols of National Socialism?

So I just had this discussion elsewhere about the meaning of the Confederate Flag and the meaning of the Rebel Flag, which is today indistinguishable from the Confederate Flag.

See: Modern display of the Confederate battle flag where the Square Version was used by the Confederacy and the Rectangular version is a more modern, post war interpretation.

Most people recognise that there is a significant racial discussion to be had surrounding these flags, as a Non-American I am not qualified to comment on anything other than the Historical scholarly context.

Now it's pretty accepted that the Confederate Flag in its many forms, in 2020, is not considered something appropriate to display in public.

Now the American Civil war ran from 1861-1865 and a lot of people still consider the societal wounds from that war to be fairly fresh.

Likewise, the Swastika was a symbol of peace and Goodluck , the earliest known Swastika can be traced to circa 10,000 BCE

However after being used by the Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei or National Socialist German Workers' Party, better known as the Nazi party from 1920-1945 the Swastika is basically unseen outside of Private Religious Ceremonies and Asia these days.

I will not be linking this flag, as I'm sure most people know what it looks like, and really, in a Western Setting, there's basically no "version" that I have encountered which is considered acceptable.

I don't think I have to go into why these symbols are questionable in Western Society these days, but I do question one symbol still in fairly common use.

The Naval Ensign of the Empire of Japan has been adopted by the JDM car scene as the JDM Flag

I know that the Japanese Rising Sun Flag has a much longer history than the Flag of the Confederacy, but it still has a history akin to the Swastika if you were to draw a parallel historically.

As an Australian and knowing of the Changi Prison Camps, and the Sandakan Death Marches it strikes me as strange to see Australians today driving around Japanese cars emblazoned with what is really a symbol that would be associated, especially by older generations, with the mistreatment of prisoners during the Second World War.

You also have the Nanjing Massacre, and you could basically also just rope in the Entire War in the Pacific as that was a heavily Naval focused theatre where the Naval Ensign of the Empire of Japan was very heavily used.

I know this will be a very hotly discussed topic, and I understand that there is a lot of division here, hence why I am afraid to open this can of worms. So I thought this was an appropriate sub for this type of discussion.
