Did ancient people give names to their ships ?

Like the Argo from the greek myth of the Argonauts, did the ancient greeks give names to their ships ? I know they anthropomorphized them by painting large eyes on the hull.

Also historically sailors seem to have an intimate relation with their vessels refering to them as 'she', cursing them or cajoling them in rough weather, etc.

And do these names have the same significance as the names of ships in other eras such as 'Valiant', 'Endeavour' and others or were they names of people or things.

WWI, Interwar, and WWII text suggestions for HS students

I am a high school teacher who has been asked to teach a course on pre-1914, WWI, the Interwar years, and WWII next semester.

Since I have an entire semester, my goal is to go beyond the normal Western Front Allied-centric materials and really dig deep into the first 50 years of the 20th century to better understand (what I determine to be) a much misunderstood time period.

I feel very knowledgeable about history in general but would like some suggestions for texts and other sources that I could order and have high school students read.

Since they are high school kids, they can handle some advanced texts but unfortunately these texts would need to walk that fine line between being too advanced and being too "light" or childish.

I have perused through the suggested books on the list and found some gems but I am hoping that someone might have further suggestions, especially regarding the interwar period.

Also, if anyone has any suggestions for places, events, theories, or topics to include in a course, I would certainly like to hear them.

Thanks, everyone.

Are there any books that detail the fall of the roman empire from a first hand experience?

Looking for any writings that give a first hand account of what the fall of the roman empire looked like, preferably from the point of view of someone who had middle class status.

If anyone could point me in the right direction, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks in advance!

Why didn’t the United States Army have Dreyse Needle Guns in stockpile if bolt-action is much more advantageous to a rifled musket?

Im referring to how common the sight was of a rifled musket during the U.S. Civil War and why would they would still be using such a firearm in 1860 if bolt-action rifles had already been invented and implemented 19 years before in armies like Bavaria and Prussia.

Sacred Prostitution in Monotheism.

Sacred prostitution or rather temple prostitution has seemingly originated in Mesopotamian culture and has been observed in various idol worship culture of Ancient Egypt, Mid-east, Greece/ Rome, India, China and even in Japan...

However amongst Monotheistic population this isn't well documented... What are the possible reasons for the same..? Lack of documentation or lack of public support for the ritual of temple prostitution..?

What are some notable works and concepts that came from the Roman Theatre?

In college and in other texts I've read I've always seen Roman Theatre referenced as basically "And then the romans made a bunch dick jokes for awhile. Moving on...." But I know the Roman Comedy is at least somewhat significant to dramatic history. I'd love for someone to lay out what that theatre scene looked like and what influences we still see today.

Did Chinese astronomers witness a moon split?

There is a claim from a Muslim PDF that Chinese astronomers observed Mohammed's "splitting of the moon".

The claim states: "The splitting of the moon event which occurred in the 7th Century CE was recorded by the Chinese astronomers. The event happened at the time of Sun Wu Kong (the Chinese King). It resulted in a broad sweeping change of the Calendar in China, the Chinese astronomers recorded that the year became longer by 5 days due to the reorganization of the phases of the moon. Thus, China was also affected at the 7th Century CE at the time of the split moon event.".

The same website also claims calendar changes occurred in Babylon and Copan around the same time in the early 7th century CE.

Im not religious, but I would like to investigate these claims.

The source of the claim is on page 16: https://www.scribd.com/document/286086546/The-Splitting-of-the-Moon

When did the idea that two distinct places on the globe might be experiencing different times of day from one another first enter the historical record?

I'm really curious as to when and to whom we can attribute the first inkling of the idea that if the sun is rising here maybe it's setting somewhere else far away. I'm not talking about the concept of timezones, which is a man-made construct. I am talking about the realization that not every part of the earth is experiencing the same time of day as you and when that was first realized, how, by whom, and what the ramifications of it were in history. Thank you!

Wasn't Suleiman the Magnificent actually a average ruler?

This might sound stupid but lately I have been researching Ottoman history and noticed out of the three famous padisahs(Selim the Grim, Mehmed the Conqueror, Suleiman the Magnificent) Suleiman's achievements seems like the most underwhelming one. Mehmed got Constantinople and unified the Anatolia with a mid-side empire while Selim defeated Mamluks and expanded the empire greatly in only 8 years. However Suleiman ruled a massive and very rich empire for 46 years and expanded the country not as much as the other two. Also, it is noticable that after Suleiman, Ottomans stopped expanding and started collapsing shortly after.

So the part that I don't understand is that Suleiman is glorified by a lot of people and considered as one of the greatest ruler of all time. Am I missing something? Thanks for any help.

P.S. sorry for any grammer mistakes that I made.

How were the various treaty obligations of the USSR handled for the constituent Republics of the USSR following its breakup?

I recall from long ago classes on the matter that the Russian Federation was treated as the successor state in most regards, such as taking on the USSR's Perm5 seat on the Security Council, and signatures of the USSR on treaties are likewise considered inherited by Russia far as I'm aware.

But how was this handled for the various autonomous Republics that made up the USSR and which went on to become independent states following the breakup? The question was spurred by rather jokingly wondering whether Armenia and Azerbaijan were considered signatories of the Kellog-Briand Pact, and while in practical terms it is irrelevant since the provisions of the Pact now are enshrined in similar language in the UN Charter, but the Pact is still valid, and the USSR was a signatory. So are they?

And more broadly and realistically, how were the international treaty obligations of the USSR handled during the post-1991 period?

What do African historians say about the slave trade?

I have read a lot about the slave trade and slavery itself in American history books, but I have no idea what African historians say about it. Do they even discuss it as part of their history? Do they disagree about the significance of the slave trade for Africans then or now? And how do their histories compare with American histories of the slave trade?

What are some great sources for life in 1866 and that era?

I am embarking on my greatest journey yet, I’m planning to write a novel. My only problem is coincidentally what has lead to many of these same project of mine fall flat previously, lack of knowledge of the time and lack of resources.

Do any of you have any sources and things like that to describe what life was like in and around 1866? Of course I’m not looking for exactly 1st hand accounts but anything, from the writers of a farmer in 1866 to a modern day historian telling the story of the year.

Edit: Specifically frontier America

Any and all help is vastly appreciated.
