How did a Christian man get so much influence in China as to lead one of the biggest rebellions in history in a region that is not known to have Christian influence?

Why have certain historical British colonies prospered (ie Australia and Canada), while others have been left in shambles (ie much of Africa)?

Obviously, when I say prosper, I don’t mean it in the sense that colonisation was peaceful and nice for First Nations people. Just curious about what was so different about the colonisation of different regions

In movies and series, we often see peasants get slaughtered and their farms and villages burned down to the ground. Is this accurate? Why do this if your intent is to conquer and hold the territory and presumably collect profits in the long term?

With the science, engineering and metallurgy of the time, would the Romans have been able to build steam powered machine if they really wanted to? Did ancient scientists think about making a contraption with the same purpose, or is this concept so foreign due to other breakthroughs made much later?

If Marco Polo was gone for 24 years, why wasn’t he presumed dead and his home sold?

I know he left Venice when he was young and probably didn’t own any property of his own. However, his father and uncle were well known travelers and merchants. They also would be gone for years at a time. So basically what I’m asking is how did these guys maintain finances back at home while they were all over the known world? It’s not as if they could easily send word that they were alive and well. Even if they could, how were they paying their taxes and such? Is it because when they came back they (his uncle and dad) brought so much wealth with them every time they returned that things were covered? I guess the real question is, how did their business work?

How much has our understanding of history (pre-1700's) improved in the last 50 years?

I was looking through /r/AskHistorians book list and saw this "Robert Bruce and the Community of the Realm of Scotland by G.W.S. Barrow (1965). An older biography, but still a..."

It states it's an older biography but the events occurred 700+ years ago, in that sense is 1965 really an older biography? Is this a generally true statement for history? Has our understanding of events from the past 1000 years grown so much in the past 50 years that a book from the 1960's is considered old?

Naming War Planes

Recently been watching a bunch of war documentaries - in the middle of Ken Burns’s “The War” at the moment - and was reminded of all the names our aviators gave their planes. Was plane art and naming a uniquely American thing? Is there a history of other nations doing the same thing? I don’t recall a photo of a Luftwaffe plane with any writing on it.

How Was Nazism Viewed By The Japanese, Before, During, And Post-World War 2?

I ask this because I was interested in the Tohokai and other Nazi organizations from Japan before, during, and post World War 2? The Nazis and Japanese admired each other and weren't that different from one another, so it's no stretch the Japanese would adopt a few things from their other Axis counterparts. Did any Japanese openly wear Nazi swastikas?

What about after World War 2? Japan apparently still has a Nazi party.

Julius Caesar was given the nickname “Queen of Bithynia” from his (in)famous affair with King Nicomedes, which he subsequently denied. But was it based on fact?

And furthermore, if it was a real affair/relationship, how might later Augustan or Christian sources have sanitized Caesar’s life to fit a heteronormative narrative?

We have other prominent examples of important Romans who we might consider “Queer” today, but I’m curious if we can authentically view Caesar through that lens.

What's a good source to learn about European city life 1905-1910?

I'm writing a novel set mainly in London between 1905 and 1910. My characters also travel to Paris, Amsterdam, Berlin and Marseilles. There's at once too many and too few sources to consult on what the cities would have looked like, and how a tourist would have tried to get around, and I'd really like to just read one or two comprehensive sources. I'm so far getting my info from random scraps of information on specific aspects and I don't think I'm doing justice to how these places "feel" or in distinguishing one place from another and creating a strong sense of place.

What would be some good books, or documentaries, or travelogues that might give me an idea about what these cities were like in that era?
