Most people aren’t aware of this, but Santa used to be depicted wearing green instead of red. This changed due to a Coke commercial in the late50’s. How could a commercial change something so profoundly, how gradual was the shift in public perception, and was this somehow planned by Cocoa Cola?

How well could the average medieval peasant sing?

In contemporary media, I often see medieval peasants with incredible singing voices employing intricate harmonies, rich tones, timing and other vocal techniques. Is this accurate? What's a modern equivalent we could compare the average medieval peasant to?

Why have the British or French did not denounce Hitler early?

It was clear that Hitler targeted minorities, a dictator who was simply interested in war, a simple reading of his book would suffice. Was there a counter preparation procedure that allowed Hitler to lay claim on Czechoslovakia unopposed or rather that the anti-communist sentiment of West that allowed him to roam somewhat freer?

As a second question: Why was not Hitler declared Antichrist by churches of that time?

I feel like those two are interconnected with anti-communist sentiment of democracies wanting to see fascist-dictatorships rather than the socialist-communist ones. (The tolerance towards Hitler even though his extremely revanchist writing)

The denouncing would also allow more intelligence to flow as Nazis would be extremely divided if the war stalled, and with the gamble on elite forces being in the flank-coast, I wonder that if British and French overestimated themselves with regards to "try it if you can".

If the elements of modern western Christmas celebrations owe so much to a Victorian revival period (a la Dickens), what were typical European Christmas celebrations like before the 19th Century?

In other words, what were the zeitgeist and practice of the holiday before Victorian culture codified what we know today?

Why is so little known about the eastern half of the Achaemenid-Persian Empire?

I understand many of our sources come from Ancient greek writers and historians, and therefore much of what we know is from what the Greeks saw. But why is it that peoples on the Eastern side of the empire haven't recorded similar histories?

About horses. How much of a luxury were they?

Horses are a mainstay of medieval fantasy. But how common were they really? Before the industrial evolution most people were peasants. Was it mostly the upper class that had horses? Could horses comparable to owning a luxury car in today's relative richness?

I'm currently reading John King Fairbank's "China: A New History" and I can't help feel that its a bit outdated scholarshipwise, in addition to shoehorning Chinese concepts into Western definitions. Are there any other works on Chinese history that I can look into to supplement Fairbanks' work?

Short Answers to Simple Questions | December 25, 2019

Previous weeks!

Please Be Aware: We expect everyone to read the rules and guidelines of this thread. Mods will remove questions which we deem to be too involved for the theme in place here. We will remove answers which don't include a source. These removals will be without notice. Please follow the rules.

Some questions people have just don't require depth. This thread is a recurring feature intended to provide a space for those simple, straight forward questions that are otherwise unsuited for the format of the subreddit.

Here are the ground rules:

  • Top Level Posts should be questions in their own right.

  • Questions should be clear and specific in the information that they are asking for.

  • Questions which ask about broader concepts may be removed at the discretion of the Mod Team and redirected to post as a standalone question.

  • We realize that in some cases, users may pose questions that they don't realize are more complicated than they think. In these cases, we will suggest reposting as a stand-alone question.

  • Answers MUST be properly sourced to respectable literature. Unlike regular questions in the sub where sources are only required upon request, the lack of a source will result in removal of the answer.

  • Academic secondary sources are prefered. Tertiary sources are acceptable if they are of academic rigor (such as a book from the 'Oxford Companion' series, or a reference work from an academic press).

  • The only rule being relaxed here is with regard to depth, insofar as the anticipated questions are ones which do not require it. All other rules of the subreddit are in force.

Book suggestions for Scottish History

Looking for book suggestions on Scottish history. Just realized I have massive gaps in knowledge when it comes to Scotland so really any time period is fine.

I guess I'm looking to learn about some of the more fascinating events/time period in Scottish history and would love a good book on it.

Rafal Gonowicz said "Those people [Soviets] were so numbed by narcotics that they were just rushing forward for certain death". How true is this? Was the Red Army really doped up on drugs? If so, which kinds and how common were they?

Full quote:

"Those people were so numbed by narcotics that they were just rushing forward for certain death. And maybe fighting against them was less risky than against a trained rebellion but it was really uncomfortable because a man was aware that he was shooting to innocent people. To dazed, innocent people."

So, is it true? I know the brutal policy of the Soviets during WW2 could be explained by such a thing. Maybe it was just alcohol? Or was meth/opiates/etc also common?

A common element of letters to Santa from the late 19th and early 20th is requests for bags of nuts for Christmas. Why is this? Was it just tradition or did children actually want nuts for Christmas over, say, candy?

Chronology of Jesus life. Do real historians take it seriously?

Yesterday on a one Polish FB group for fans of history someone asked about the date of Jesus' birth. One person has jumped out with some picture of a wildly specific dates for many Biblical events regarding Jesus. ( here is the pic https://imgur.com/a/hB6VYwK ). The other guy came in and started to criticize saying that history doesn't have any good proof for almost anything about Jesus story except some basic facts like that he existed. So the dates from the picture are some theological rubbish, not a historical research. The first guy defended it saying that this is exactly what historians do, speculating like that based on available sources and it is a legit, research valid chronology. Someone else has linked to another very oddly specific chronology: http://nowoezone.com/NTC09.htm?fbclid=IwAR2CfrimmgjLheUxyvQuZqS9IIwdpx2C0gyGqnh3I7mlMGRAPFTk_-3Yat4

So here is my question or rather few questions. I am not a historian and have no idea how you guys do your job. I am bit baffled by what those people were saying. So:

  1. Do those chronologies which I linked above have any scientific academic merits or if you would try to push forward something like this in a historical (not bible studies/theology) department you would be laugh off?
  2. Do we really have enough sources to do any such specific dating like this? I know that the consensus is Jesus existed and probably died on a cross and was baptized. So the sources are rather vague if that the really best of the consensus historians reached. Or am I wrong?
  3. If the sources are really vague and the research shown above is academically valid then: Do we really should trust any research regarding ancient/medieval times? I am not meaning healthy dose of everyday skepticism but the fact that we (laymen) treat most of ancient history told to us in school and everywhere as facts. And if a research is based on a really obscure vague sources then it is more in realm of wild speculations if it gives so much specific information.

Something I realized while watching a documentary, most of the videos or photos I see of tanks, on either side in WWII, that have been destroyed or knocked out have their guns facing downwards. Why did this happen?

Where did medieval university students go before university?

Where did medieval university students have to go to school before they could attend university? Today, there's K-12 education and other national education systems. But how did it work in the medieval age? Did students just go to university without any prior schooling (perhaps knowing how to read and write), or was there a sort of admissions process or requirement for prior knowledge?

Why do actors in old American (40s or earlier) television sound so different? Has the “American accent” changed?

My dad guesses they sounded so different because many actors were originally stage trained, meaning they spoke and projected differently. I thought it was due to changes in recording equipment or evolution of the way the American accent sounds. Does anyone know? Are either of us correct?

What did the Soviet historians produce, both in terms of historiography and historical production?

This question arose in a dinner with friends the other day. What's the Soviet contribution to the field of History? What historiographical methods were developed there? Who were the biggest influences, and why didn't they became better known names, even in countries with a strong Marxist influence in History Academia like those of South America? In Physics, for example, we have Soviet household names like Landau and Cherenkov, and every physicist knows what a Tokamak is
