My grand-uncle has told me stories of how his father taught him how to shoot, and how common it was for men and even women to be carrying guns. In many movies from the golden era of mexican cinema you can see women wanting to marry soldiers, children wanting to be soldiers, or soldier being a prestigious profession in general.

But today, in my experience, almost no one knows how to shoot nor owns guns, and while no one disrespects soldiers, no one idolizes them.

I imagine this change is due in part because the revolution happened, and we had relative peace since then, but still, Russia has been at peace for a while and it is still very militaristic, so there must be more to it

I just want to mention that while my grandparents and other old relatives have told me many stories of when they were little that make it seem like everyone had guns at no point I got the impression that they missed guns, nor were they resentful that they didn't own guns anymore.

I started wondering if this change was planned by the government, or if society collectively decided to move away from guns, so I asked some of my old relatives if they remember a government campaign against guns or something like that, they told me they remembered the army started buying guns from people at some point but "it wasn't a big deal"

It just seems really weird that they'd let a film crew into the ruins to shoot a science fiction movie. Why did they shoot there? Was there any pushback from the government or local groups to preserve the status of the site?

I was told in public school that Paul Revere rode a horse and told the town about the British.

Lately, lots of folks have been talking about climate change and the environment, with many people focusing on capitalism and resource exploitation as the major culprits and blaming those systems for our current state.

However, I'm curious about what pollution and environmental practices were like in the former Eastern Bloc.

How bad was pollution there? What was their policy on ecological preservation? Was there an priority in achieving production goals over environmental impact? How much did corruption and bureaucracy play a role in this?

I'm looking for an entry into the history of China and I've been checking the book list. However, I'm more oriented towards the cultural aspects (specially literature, art and philosophy, but everything else too). Is there any history book you would recommend that gives a good account of the culture of China while giving enough political and economic information to put it into context? Or maybe just a slightly culture-oriented book of general history.

Any period would be nice, but I would prefer books that cover long spans of time over specialized books (or even one that covers the whole of the history of China, but maybe that's too much or there aren't any good ones). After all, I'm a beginner. Or if you think I should definitely learn about general history first, the advice will also be welcome. Thanks in advance!

Did maps always use north as up because of compasses? Is this a modern normalization or have maps always been like that?

We are all familiar with the race to the sea that led to trench warfare and movement on both sides bogging down for the rest of the war, why didn't either side use naval artillery to break up the lines of the other side where they were close to the Sea? The guns of that period definitely had the power and the range, especially the British dreadnought class of ships.

If so, how important was slavery for Chinese economy and how prevalent was it (for exampe Egypt used to have slaves but they made only 5% population and were not very important)? Also, who were their slaves?

Hello.

I am someone from bosnia who is very interested in medieval stuff. However, every time I try to find something about the ban or kingdom of Bosnia, its almost nothing.

There's two bare bones wiki articles, a couple of heraldry pictures that are essentially the same, and 0 actual depictions of Bosnian knights and such back then.

I asked before, and got the answer that ottomans don't really take care to preserve history, so that's why there's almost nothing.

Is this the case? If so, am I just left to assume they had knights similar to others at the time + greathelms and a french aesthetic?
