The American Civil War and British Military Schools

Any help is appreciated!

Does anyone know how or if the American Civil War had any impact on what was being taught in European military schools (particularly in the UK)?

Did the US have an important role in WWI? Were they involved? If so, how and what was it?

Growing up in Australia I only ever learnt about the diggers and of Gallipoli, and sometimes of Britain’s involvement. I’ve always wondered wether America had a role in the First World War, and if so, what was it? Did they join the war immediately, or not until later on like in World War Two? What were their motives for joining the war?

Why don’t former Italian colonies, such as Libya and Somalia, speak Italian?

I understand that the cultures and languages of those nations were already firmly rooted, but that was pretty similar to Algeria and Morocco who still ended up using French (and in Western Sahara, Spanish) quite extensively to this day. Why was this not the case in the Italian colonies?

We learn often of Buddhism's expansion through South and East Asia, but what about westward, like over the Silk Road? Are there any artistic depictions of Buddha as far as the Near East or further?

How did "quicksand" become a ubiquitous death trap in adventure fiction?

Going through old questions I found this one from a few months back with no answer and it piqued my interest, so I thought I'd try my luck. Why or how did quicksand come to be so common of a feature in adventure fiction?

How come Portugal 🇵🇹 didn't become Spain 🇪🇸?

Many kingdoms from the kingdom of Leon, like Castille, became Spain, but not the county of Portugal. Both countries were even ruled by the same king, Filipe II. How was it possible?

"The South got something to say!", Andre 3000 famously declared in 1995. How did Southern Hip Hop gain prominence until the late 90s? How did its distinct scenes develop in Atlanta, Houston and Memphis?

Today the influence of Southern Hip Hop is ubiquitous on the radio and in the charts. Yet in '95 mainstream Rap was still firmly divided between East and West Coast. So that when Outcast won Best New Act at the 95 Source Awards they were heavily booed - leading to Dres' iconic outburst. Fast forward to 1998 and the groups' album Aquemini would go Double Platinum and receive the (then) coveted 5 Mic rating of Source magazine. So I guess it's two interconnected questions, background on either would be great:

  • How did Southern Rap rise from this more marginal position to relative national popularity by the late 90s? Outkast as the best known act may have paved the way, but I'm sure there's more to it.

  • Looking beyond the mainstream, southern groups like the Geto Boys had been active since the 80s. Distinct scenes developed further during the 90s, in Atlanta and cities including Houston (e.g. UGK, DJ Screw) and Memphis (incl. Three 6 Mafia). How did they develop their own sounds, often very different from both Costs' templates?

"If I had Canadian Soldiers, American technology and British officers I would rule the world." - Winston Churchill... or did he? Is this a fake quote?

I've encountered the above quote while working on the Canadian role during the First World War. Another notable one is:

We went up the ridge as Albertans and Nova Scotians. We came down as Canadians.

Again, if someone could walk me through the veracity of this quote, it would be much appreciated.

Is there a scholarly consensus on whether the "Little Ice Age" was partially Anthropogenic due to the destruction of the population of the Americas?

I'd read in "1493" by Charles Mann that some scientists and historians believe that the death of most of the population of the Americas and subsequent reforestation and lack of controlled burns across much of the continents was at least a partial cause in the worst part of the Little Ice Age, is there a scholarly consensus on this?

Looking for Book Recommendations on Berlin circa WWII

Hey All, I realize you prefer specific questions so I hope this will be alright. I'm preparing to write a screenplay set in Berlin in 1938/1939 and I want to better understand the rise of the Nazi Party and what the mindset of the average German during this time period would have been. I'm looking for book/documentary recommendations to help me research the following:

  1. How exactly did the Nazi Party rise to power and what were the feelings of Germans at the time? Was it similar to Trump's rise where, although he won, 50% of the country still does not support him?
  2. How much did Germans understand about the Nazi's plans for the Jews and other non desirables?
  3. What was gay culture in Berlin like before the Nazi's came to power? How about during?
  4. The progression of the ghettoization and concentration camps.
  5. The Hierarchy of power within the Nazi Party.

I am, of course, googling and researching at my own public library but I thought I'd also consult you fine folks and see where you pointed me. Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated!

What did America do after the dust bowl

Today I was learning about the dust bowl, which horribly affected my state(Oklahoma). And during several road trips , dad tells me that most of the lakes I see aren't natural. Is this related, if so, what else did the U.S do to prevent another dust bowl.

Thursday Reading & Recommendations | April 25, 2019

Previous weeks!

Thursday Reading and Recommendations is intended as bookish free-for-all, for the discussion and recommendation of all books historical, or tangentially so. Suggested topics include, but are by no means limited to:

  • Asking for book recommendations on specific topics or periods of history

  • Newly published books and articles you're dying to read

  • Recent book releases, old book reviews, reading recommendations, or just talking about what you're reading now

  • Historiographical discussions, debates, and disputes

  • ...And so on!

Regular participants in the Thursday threads should just keep doing what they've been doing; newcomers should take notice that this thread is meant for open discussion of history and books, not just anything you like -- we'll have a thread on Friday for that, as usual.

FOIA released documents from the 1950's show the CIA considered publishing books to fight an ideological war, where such books ever produced?

I was looking over this paper and the last page suggests as a plan going forward books might be developed as principle ideological tool to fight socialism.

What books, if any published, from 1952 onward's would have or may have had CIA backing to achieve the goals listed on this last page, did the CIA follow through on these plans to develop strong ideological literature for the public consumption to "Revalidate theoretically the major principles of the free society"?

I would appreciate speculative answers as PM's to further my own research, as hard factual answers may be impossible to source due to the classified nature of such actions.

I'm looking for examples of multiethnic/multinational/multilingual military formations

Hello everyone. I'm writing a dissertation on Austria-Hungary's "mixed" regiments, i.e. regiments containing soldiers of two or more nationalities. My particular interest is in the twenty or so Czech-German regiments raised in Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia under the Habsburg monarchy.

I'm looking for any comparative cases that might be helpful in conceptualizing the "problem." So in your area/period of expertise, do you know of any military units that featured soldiers of two or more ethnic/national/racial/religious/linguistic groups? I would especially appreciate reading recommendations. I've thought of a few potential examples:

  • Flemish speakers in the Belgian Army
  • Polish speakers in the Imperial German Army
  • Any of the Soviet Union's national groups in the Red Army
  • European immigrants in the American Civil War
  • Irishmen in the British Army (???)
  • Black soldiers in white, US Army formations

If you know something about these examples or any others, I'd love to hear about it. Most importantly, if you know of any books or articles on these topics, I'd LOVE to know.

Thanks for the help!

First year bachelor student thats needs some advice

(Btw im dutch so theyre might be some weird translations here)Im taking a class on burger collectives, and I have to wright an essay on some form of burger collectives, including historiography and a potential follow up research. The problem is, this class that im taking had multipel subjects, all the ones that interested me were already taken so I am stuck with a subject dont have allot of interest in.

I was wandering if people had suggestions for a potential subject for my research wich has a historiographical debat regarding either of these to subjects: anarchism or free masonery. So the research has to be about a form of burgercollective: could be commons, guilds etc etc. But im not particular interested in those subjects. So I figured Ill take a civil society subject. The problem is that while I have some broad idee on what I would like the research, as mentioned, Im having some trouble really finding a historical debat about these subjects. I was wondering if a more experienced historian would know some potential debats including historiography.

Obviously im not asking you to write the research for me, but Ive someone knows two historians who have been in debat around on of the two subjects, that would be more then enough to get me started.
