At my international relation class today, my professor stated that it was an European war until the US got involved. This seemed strange to me, since I believe it's fairly common knowledge that the Great Powers of the time were colonialist, thus their colonies got involved since the beginning. Is his statement correct?

I'm just curious how this will be handled given that they tend to feel like sensitive topics even after all this time.

I'm studying Rome currently, and there are quite a few books and articles which compare the Roman Empire (and maybe some Republic?) to China (mostly the Han dynasty it seems). Why is this? I can't really find a clear answer anywhere, since the introductions within said books don't really give a reason why the two are comparable. I'm sure there are many ways to connect the two, but all of them seem pretty arbitrary to me. Can someone expand upon this relationship for me?
Edit: Some grammar

When I read Latin, it seems that female nouns are suffixed with "a" and male are typically suffixed with "us" but in modern romance languages it seems more common to suffix male nouns with "o" (latina vs latino, nina vs nino).
Do we know when, how, or why this changed?

I posted this a few months ago and didn't get anything, maybe the time is more ripe today.

My brother-in-law is doing research for a book. He wanted to know my ideas on a fairly obscure topic of boats and river travel of the early 1800s. He can find lots of material on how flat bottom boats were built and sailed down the rivers. But no material on how water was kept out of the boats. He suspected that some sort of pump may have been used or were they bailed by hand (probably almost continuously). If they were pumped how was the pump constructed in the wilderness? Leather was probably used for the piston end, so did people have enough metal on hand for the pump body, or was a branch hollowed out and used? If not pumping then were the boats eventually made water tight enough so that only occasional builging was required? Were assuming that wood buckets were used to bail water out of the boats.
Can someone provide some details on the or point us somewhere that would?
Thanks.

I am researching labor strikes in post-WWII Iraq and Iran and have found that most discussion among the literature I'm reading treats labor as a secondary concern to Communism and anti-colonialism. Obviously labor cannot be separated from Communism/anti-Colonialism completely when discussing the Middle East, but I am wondering if there are any explicit labor histories out there that I am missing. Even though my specific focus is Iraq and Iran, I believe literature with a broader lens will be helpful as well.

Hi, I am doing research for my internship, and will be completing my history bachelors this May. I have been researching Huguenot Calvinism in colonial New York, and for weeks, my questions have been yielding fruitless results no matter where I look. There are many technical histories of Calvinism and Dutch Reformed and Huguenot faiths, speaking about the leaders, development, theology, et cetera. My question though is, how did this religion affect their day-to-day lives, beliefs on the secular and mundane, or change their views on life and death? I thought I wouldn't have too much trouble finding a synopsis on the social life of Huguenots in the new world, but it's been a chore. I cannot tell if it simply doesn't exist yet, (and I need to write it) or I am not searching in the right way.
I have been briefed about boolean operators and have refined my searches on many databases to no avail. Is there a way to search, directly or indirectly, for specifically more anthropological or even archaeological studies about this group of people? Thanks in advance.

I have a variety of questions about the operation of merchant and warships in the Early Modern period. Too many to post here in one go. I am looking for any history buff who knows a great deal about sailing and sailing history and can advise me on this subject as well as suggest sources for additional research.
Thank you very much.

I remember hearing a while back that it started as a branch of Judaism (that might also not be true) and that many at the time (the Romans I think) saw it as a cult of sorts and it wasn’t widely accepted for many years. Now everything I’ve just said may be completely wrong.
(Also please don’t go in the comments and start mini wars of what religion is better. Nobody’s got time for that)

I'm speaking specifically about things such as the Guards at Buckingham Palace, and the uniforms used specifically on Parades, such as this example of a French Republican Guard Cavalryman in 2007.
It's my understanding that these were, previously, merely just... The uniforms, and at some point the 'field' and 'ceremonial' uniforms began to diverge.
Assuming I'm actually correct and this happens, when and why?
(Obviously this will likely vary case-to-case, but examples from any country are fine by me!)

Do we have any sources of what clothing or jewellery Athenian women may have worn at such events?

Hopefully this doesn't evoke too many reddit trolls. How did the N-word go from being used almost exclusively as a derogatory word against African Americans to being ingrained in so much African American pop-culture?

How authentic is the movie gladiator to the real thing, is the movie faithful in its interpretation or is it mostly made up?

Does any one have a good source or a suggestion for a book (or other format) that has collections of floor plans for castles? I'd love to have a book that does more than just recount the history of said buildings, but has pictures, maps, drawings, and diagrams that show what the castles look like on the inside.
Historical information would also be good, but I really want something akin to a book of maps or layouts that show the interior rooms, corridors, and the like.
