I've seen people say that Bill Slim was one of the better regarded British leaders in WW2, both by historians looking in retrospect and by his own men at the time.
Is this true and if so what were his strategies and actions that elevated him so? And given his obscurity when compared to Montgomery in the popular image was he unfairly maligned at the time or is it simply a case of the Pacific Theatre and the Indian Front in particular not receiving the same level of attention in the public as the European and African Campaigns?

Hi Historians! I’ve recently become encapsulated by the Titanic’s history. I have so many questions but my most burning one is the theory (I guess it could be called an idea) that Third Class or Steerage passengers were locked or forcibly held below decks because of their class alone, while the other classes were allowed to the lifeboats. I’ve read various sources about this topic but with the resources I have (not much more than google), I can’t come to a definitive answer. This is unheard of on modern ocean liners, but obviously Passenger ships have changed over 100 years. But was that really okay back then, locking less wealthier passengers down below deck to presumably die, assuming it’s true? If it’s true, why? Why was that protocol, or why did that happen? If not, what led people to believe or come to this conclusion?
Disclaimer: I am by NO means a historian myself and I would barely even call me an amateur history buff. If I made mistakes in terminology or something PLEASE correct me! I want to learn! :^)

Dear Historians.
Fighting age men in the UK were conscripted for WWII - how did those men pay the mortgage, rent etc when they were away fighting and not working for a wage?
Thank you.

My grandpa was a navigator in the 8th AAF during WWII. Got me to wondering what gun(s) he would have been issued, along with the rest of his crew. Thoughts?

If theoretically, Alexander the Great was born female and transitioned to male—would a historian write about Alexandria's childhood with her family and later refer to Alexander's armies and his military campaigns?
Disclaimer: I'm not interested in your political opinions, nor will I share my own. I want to know what the process is that a historian goes through as they make these kinds of decisions.

From a European standpoint when learning about the First World War we are taught about the European theater, specifically the Western Front. Therefore, other aspects such as the Middle East, and the conflict in the Balkans are viewed as side shows to essentially a war between Germany, Britain, France and later America. Even the Eastern Front is neglected. Similarly the causes of the conflict are so varying it appears that it was a series of wars between nations, E.G: Serbia and Austria-Hungary occurring at the same time connect by various treaties. Therfore, my question is, Was the First World War truly a 'world war'?

I've been looking for information on how the Allies used the Enigma Machine/Code after it was completely cracked at Bletchley Park. I can't find any articles on it as they're all about how it was cracked. If there is anything, references would be appreciated.

Was there any evidence that points to him supporting the application of his evolutionary research to humans? Did he also approve of politicians using his research to justify imperialism?

I have been i contact with the researchers for WWII soldiers. Most files were burned in a fire. My Dad was in WWII stationed in Biak for the first two years. I just heard back from St Louis. They said no big smile but they may find info on morning reports. What is a morning report and is it specific info as to a certain soldier in the Army AIr Corps WWII? Another words would it be worth paying 35 dollars for whatever they find.

I'm mostly concerned with the broad range between antiquity and the early modern period; rather than the vessels we have today.

The reaction to Ilhan Omar's comments has once again shone the spotlight on the relationship between the U.S. and Israel. It feels bizarre seeing politicians of the most powerful country on earth getting up in arms over such a small country.
Has the U.S. always been so closely aligned with Israel, and is there something else behind this intense relationship beyond an ideological commitment to a Jewish homeland?
