In the final scenes of the film "The Lives of Others" (2009) the writer sees the reports of his surveillance. Could people really ask to see the information gathered on them by the Stasi after Germany's reunification? What would they read about themselves?

EDIT: My mistake, the movie was released in 2006, not 2009

The symbolism behind my family crest

Hi, I am asking you historians out there that know about family crests and coat of arms about the symbology and meaning behind anything in my great. I did my best to recreate it via photoshop. My family obtained this crest from King Henry VIII along the deed to Portchester Castle. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you historians

Were there any notable successful, or nearly successful, antifacist movements during the rise of fascism in Europe in the early 20th century?

I wonder if therein might lie good ideas worth considering today.

After an explorer returned home with newly charted maps, did their king/queen ever make fake maps to mess with other countries?

I guess this would be like any government mass producing "fake news" and sending it out to their rivals, but in this case it would take their rivals a while to figure out they've been duped.

why are more amerindians in Mexico, Central and South America than in North America?

If the Spanish came to the Americas earlier than the brittish and they interacted for a longer period of time with the amerindians (having way more time to infect the native population with old world diseases), why are more amerindians in Mexico, Central and South America than North America if supposedly "90% of amerindians died from diseases such as smallpox" during the colonization?

Shouldn't there be an similar amount/percentage of amerindians in North, Central and South America, since they all died at the same rate?

Are German intelligence services (HUMINT as well as SIGINT) during WW2 as incompetent and dysfunctional as commonly depicted?

I was wondering if this assessment is actually true, or a misconception based on the circumstance that little seems to be known about German and Axis intelligence successes in general compared to the Allied side?

Were the Vikings in any notable naval battles?

For all their songs about the Whale Road and the conquests of kingdoms around the north Atlantic, I don't think I've read about them going "ship to ship" with a real naval force. Did nations have proper navies in the 9th century like the Romans or Greeks centuries before?

Was Elizabeth I a virgin all her life?

I've gotten completely different answers by seperate professors at my college at both extremes of the spectrum. I hear arguments that she was because the omnipresence of servants waiting/spying on her. I hear that she most definitely was not and that she was just playing politics. What do you think about the matter? What out of 10 do you think she remained a virgin all her life. 0 for no way, 10 for assuredly a virgin at death.

Could Ancient Greek armies inflict lasting economic damage on their enemies?

Victor Davis Hanson's most important contribution to scholarship is probably Warfare and Agriculture in Classical Greece. Published in 1983, it argued that due to the labor required to permanently destroy olive trees and vines, and the limited time window when wheat crops could be easily burned, Greek armies struggled to inflict serious economic harm when devastating enemy territory.

Has this argument been seriously challenged since it emerged 36 years ago? Have other scholars sought to demonstrate the possibility of long term damage through ravaging, and if so, who does the balance of evidence favor?

Did Jews in the Ottoman Empire / Eastern Mediterranean have a language like Ladino/Yiddish?

I've been reading about the Ottomans and the various people living in the empire. Armenians, Greeks, Arabs, Turks, Serbs, etc. I would imagine that officials and businesspeople in each of these groups spoke both their own language and whatever the required "official" language was - presumably some form of Ottoman Turkish. But what did Jews speak?

From my understanding, modern Hebrew was largely revived in the early and mid-20th century. I know that Ladino was quite popular in Bosnia, but otherwise, did Jews have any sort of localized Hebrew dialect?
