Sort of a weird question, and I'm thinking mostly of the British Empire when it had dominions all over the world, in many places where Christianity was not the dominant religion - did it recognize accept local practices, or did it try to impose its own legal apparatus and concept of marriage on the population, or...what?

This could question could apply to any country that was on the Western Front (British Empire, Germany, France etc.). I'm going over the top in an attack and I get hit, either by machine gun fire or artillery, but I'm not dead. How likely am I to survive this ordeal?

Hello,
I was wondering if someone could recommend books or sites from which to get books, about the medieval period.
I'm looking for books relating to medieval life, politics & religion, medieval warfare (training, composition of armies, organization of armies, knights), battles, castles (such as building them, defending them, besieging them) the titles, such as baron, count, etc. and what exactly that entails (such as the land area which they ruled directly, the composition of those lands: villages, towns, cities).
I'm also looking for books about the various kingdoms/empires of that period and other historical events, such as the Muslim conquest of Iberia and their advancement into France, the Reconquista, the various kingdoms, such as the barbarian kingdoms, that replaced the Western Roman Empire.
Basically, i'm looking for books from the fall of the Western Roman Empire/the start of the Medieval Period to the Renaissance.
Thank you.
Edit: I am looking for books to read for pleasure.
I know that the time period and subjects are wide and varied, but at the moment, i can't say i have a good idea about specific time periods/subjects that i would want to delve further into. I will have a better idea, once i read some books.

It seems clear in retrospect, but did any of the royal family notice each successive generation becoming more weak and deformed than the last? Would a court physician have recommended against their incestuous activities?

Much as I would love to know whether aviators jettisoning bombs after unsuccessful patrols ever conked a shark on the head...
My primary curiosity stems from how potentially disruptive events such as sinkings and the accompanying oil releases might have been, or perhaps the effects of battle. I don’t imagine there were many pressing concerns about wildlife at the time, and maybe the answer is simply “it’s too difficult to know.” So more broadly, what about the environmental toll the war took in other areas (climate change/CO2 aside)?

Not sure if this is the right sub, but is a history of appearances of dwarves, goblins, orcs and elves in literature?
I'm under the impression that Tolkien "invented" them, is this correct?
What were older portrayals of these characters like if Tolkien wasn't the first?

I understand that this subreddit wants scholarly like articles but a short answer that’s correct is better than no answer at all

I read in a book (can't remember which now) that Edward VIII believed he could have married Simpson and kept the throne but didn't because he did not want to tarnish the image of the monarchy given the ensuing crisis that would have resulted from it. He was painted in a noble way almost.
Is this an accurate characterization of what he believed?

All-black WWI battalion. https://imgur.com/gallery/WiOXY6S
Hey guys! I already posted this on r/WWI
My dad found this cleaning out my grandmother's house after she died. He remembered my grandmothertelling him that her dad (my dad's grandfather) fought in WWI.
I know about the Canadian black battalion, but was there ever an American all-black battalion or something? Or is my great-grandfather actually Canadian?

Labienus was Caesar's right hand man throughout all the key campaigns pre Rubicon. After everything they saw and did together, and the huge degree of trust Caesar had for him, Labienus must have had a substantial reason for his actions. He certainly was willing to die for it.

I was looking at a list of chinese inventions and gunpowder came up. I was wondering 1) If the discovery of the chemical compound of gunpowder emerged anywhere else independently. 2) Was it first discovered by a chinese dynasty and if so, 3) was it brought to the west by marco polo.

I know inflation plays a role, but what are the other factors? Things like rule changes or popularity.

Would the Germans have known that the Antonine plague had decimated the Roman army and economy, and that they were weakened and perhaps vulnerable? Or was there something about the Goths that made them seem was more menacing than even the Roman Empire at its height?
