Any historian out there that could help?

So I found a primary source in a book and need to reference it in my footnotes and bibliography. I have never done this and so confused. If you can help or provide a good website that would be helpful. It’s recommended to be in Chicago format Thanks

Are our common alcoholic drinks stronger or weaker than their historic counterparts?

I would assume that exact percentages probably aren't known but I've always wondered if ancient Roman wine or Egyptian beer would knock a modern person on their butt or if it would be the other way around?

Superfiring turrets and an all centerline armament make so much sense, yet it took designers years to come up with those things. Why? Additionally, why did it take until the battle of Tsushima for designers to accept that fewer, heavier guns are better than lots of smaller ones?

As a European, the American Segregation seems so surreal to me. They fought a civil war to abolish slavery, in WW2 they fought an enemy doing even worse things in the name of race, their constitution says everyone is equal. Then why did they keep opressing the blacks for so long?

How often (if ever) are previously unknown or lost works from the classical antiquity discovered today?

I can't help but wonder when I see lists of famous works that we know exist from classical antiquity, but are thought to be lost, does anything new of significance get discovered these days? Something like a lost chapter of Livy, a biography by Plutarch, or a play by Aristophanes?

I would think it must be very rare as almost every document from the era would have long since disintegrated. My understanding is the most writing from the world of classical antiquity is lost, unless enormous effort was undertaken throughout the ages to save it. Monks or some of the other tiny population of literate people had to recopy by hand everything they wanted to preserve every hundred years or so. And so any writing that does survive from that era is more like the 20th recopy by someone 1500 years later than an original from the time. As such, even if a new historical site is excavated, they might find pottery, but wouldn't find a treasure trove of ancient scrolls.

Is my understanding correct and that everything lost likely to remain lost, or does new stuff ever come to light? What was the most significant discovery in recent times along these lines?

Is the hun speech real ?

So a month ago I stumbled upon a extract of a documentary about pre-ww1 Europe. It showed the Kaiser motivating his troops to go suppress the boxer rebellion in China. But in the comments, a bunch of people were claiming it was anti German allied propaganda and that the so called "Hun speech" never took place. Is that true ?

Need Help Identifying Items Found With Great Grandfather's Purple Heart from WW2

Hello, My grandfather passed recently and as my mother was going through his things we found my great grandfather's Purple Heart from WW2. In the case we found a few other items that we cannot identify and I would love if someone could assist us in figuring these out.

What we found

Obviously there are the people heart related items, though we aren't sure what the purple bar and small pin at the top are for. I assume used in uniform dress in some fashion.

In the bottom left we believe we have some kind of infantryman pin?

In the bottom right we have the piece of shrapnel pulled out of his back which is why he received the Purple Heart.

On the right hand side we have some bar of some type (closer photo included) that we have no idea what these signify.

On the left it seems we have an Iron Cross, I have included more pictures of this piece specifically. We have no idea what this Iron Cross means or where he would have gotten it from. Maybe something he took off of a German soldier or found during the war?

Any assistance with identifying these items would be greatly appreciated and would mean a lot to my mom and myself.

Suggested bibliography on French Restoration (1816-1830)

I am currently working on my undergraduate thesis and I need to inform myself thoroughly about the social, political and cultural context of France during the Bourbon Restoration. The topic of my thesis is the relationship between ideology and literary product in Stendhal's novel "Rouge et noir", so I'm mainly interested in gathering information about the ideologies at the time and their influence on the different layers of society. I could use sources in French, English or Spanish.

I highly appreciate any suggestions!

What kind of axes did the Mayan civilizations use to cut down trees and other foliage (if at all)?

I often see mesoamericana pre-Columbian societies referred to as “Stone Age” though I’ve also heard of instances of metalworking. Does this metalworking extend to tools such as axes and machetes? If not, what kind of rock would their society use for axe heads; granite, tuff, flint, et cetera? Or was their method of dealing with the jungles and bush land just to burn it?

Admiral Nimitz: Mistake number one: the Japanese attacked on Sunday morning. Nine out of every ten crewmen of those ships were ashore on leave. If those same ships had been lured to sea and been sunk--we would have lost 38,000 men instead of 3,800." Is this a fair assessment ?

Admiral Nimitz: Three Mistakes Japan Made At Pearl Harbor Mistake number two: when the Japanese saw all those battleships lined in a row, they got so carried away sinking those battleships, they never once bombed our dry docks opposite those ships. If they had destroyed our dry docks, we would have had to tow everyone of those ships to America to be repaired. As it is now, the ships are in shallow water and can be raised. One tug can pull them over to the dry docks, and we can have them repaired and at sea by the time we could have towed them to America. And I already have crews ashore anxious to man those ships.

Mistake number three: every drop of fuel in the Pacific theater of war is in top of the ground storage tanks five miles away over that hill. One attack plane could have strafed those tanks and destroyed our fuel supply. That's why I say the Japanese made three of the biggest mistakes an attack force could make or God was taking care of America.

By far, the more surprising target oversight of the Japanese attack was the oil and gas storage tanks. The entire fuel supply for the Pacific Fleet was stored in above ground tanks on the eastern side of the naval base, (see Figure 2). As can be seen from the photo, these tanks were perfectly visible to the naked eye and, ergo, perfect targets.28 These tanks were particularly susceptible to enemy action; none of the tanks had bombproof covers.29 Even a few bombs dropped amongst the tanks could have started a raging conflagration.30 Why werenít these crucial targets hit? Their loss would have essentially starved the U.S. Navy out of the Central Pacific.31 Didnít the Japanese know they were there? The Japanese knew all about those oil storage tanks. Their failure to bomb the Fleetís oil supply reflected their preoccupation with tactical rather than logistical targetsÖNagumoís mission was to destroy Kimmelís ships and the airpower on Oahu. If Yamamoto and his advisers chose the wrong targets, or insufficiently diversified ones, the mistake rests on their shouldersÖ32 Pearl Harborís the only filling station in town

What was the value of (and reason for) the INF treaty limiting short and intermediate range ground-based nuclear weapons, while longer range ICBMs and marine systems of any range were still allowed?

After reading up on the INF treaty, I see that it only applies to ground-based weapons, and only those with a 500-5000km range.

I have not been able to find any commentary on why this is the case...

Why was it productive to limit these ranges, while allowing ICBMs and marine system to continue?

Is there a particular way in which this limitation changed the political climate at the time for the better despite the obviously uncovered cases?

Was it simply a gesture of good faith without much meaning since the others were still allowed?

Was it a matter of settling for whatever you could get?

How has Holocaust Denial influenced Academic Scholarship?

Given the unfortunate reach and cultural influence that Holocaust deniers have had on public understanding of the Holocaust, how have they impacted legitimate scholarly research into the subject?

Have the 'questions' posed by deniers (such as claiming that gas chambers were for delousing) led to more thorough research into specific aspects of the Holocaust?

Has Holocaust denial from within academia damaged or otherwise complicated the professional understanding of the Holocaust?

How has the Academic response to Holocaust deniers' claims changed over the past several decades, and what role have historians played in shaping the public image of the Holocaust?

How have the academic responses to Holocaust denial influenced the efforts of other researchers to combat denialism in other subjects, such as Vaccine Denial and AIDS Denial?

How did money work in USSR society?

I was always under the impression that money wouldn't exist in Communist societies. After reading that someone who designed an aeroplane was rewarded with rubles, this got me thinking about the role of money in every day life. Could people actually go out and buy things and how would this affect how they were viewed by security services? How did the role of money change over the course of the USSR?
