What is the fastest way? What is the most luxurious? What would it cost and how would I go about booking the trip? Since it is international would I need a passport (we'll say I'm American) or visa?

I dont know much about history but considering the current terrors that Vietnam vets feel, why didn't they just end it before it came to a "loss" when they had the advantage at the time? Was there a treaty saying they can't? I understand the incredible loss of innocent life but couldnt they just get the "easy win" back then?

Hi, asking for a friend doing research. Does anyone have any good information on brothels in Kyoto in the 1350's (Muromachi period)?
My friend has already asked historian Janet R. Goodwin who already writes on the topic in English, but the research my friend has done on this is 100 years too late (1450's/1500's). (It's when the locations she was researching became evident on silkscreens of the time.)
Any information would be helpful. Please give sources if possible.

I just watched this video about Russian oligarchy and it got me thinking about how was Gorbachev able to dissolute USSR. Did he have the authority to do so unilaterally or did the parliament (Politburo it was called?) had to agree to it?
How was the decision to dissolve USSR reached and who were parties involved. What obstacles if any and how were those overcome?
As a side question, is the Communist Party still the party of the government or are they just one of several political parties?
As for those curious the video I mentioned is: https://youtu.be/w5H56mdsBLI

So the effects of the Plague of Justinian on the eastern roman empire are pretty well discussed but do we know much about how much is spread and the effects of it over in western and norther Europe? I'd guess it'd spread more slowly out in places where the remains of the empire's trade network were less intact like Britain. Are there not enough written sources and I'd be better served to ask the archaeologist?

This isn't a question about history, so delete it if it's not allowed.
This is a bit of a strange question, but please bear with me. I'm an undergraduate currently minoring in history. I'm in my first upper level class and so far things aren't going as well as I'd hoped. I have the interest and the drive to learn, I just can't seem to analyze and comprehend historical texts properly. I seem to have a problem with understanding different kinds of sources and translating them into comprehensive information. This is fine as a learning opportunity, but my grades are suffering and it's very discouraging.
So my question, that I hope is allowed here, is how do historians analyze texts? What should I be focusing on/avoid? How do you all utilize different kinds of sources, and how reliable can they be? I plan on talking with my professor about it, but I figured I'd ask here because of how helpful this community is. Any kind of advice is welcome!

Hi,
I've searched here, online and in my university's library but can't find good sources on the effects of Peter's move of the Russian capital to St. Petersburg. Was it a good idea? How has the decision been evaluated? What is the historiography on the move? What was the effect on Moscow?
Thanks!

Hi, I'm struggling to find information about military action in France along the front lines in 1919. My grandfather's diary states he was near the Argonne front from April 1919-Dec 1919. In his diary he describes being bombed and gassed by German planes and firing a Vikers MG from trenches. But everything I find online seems to end at 1918. Can anyone direct me to some sources for what was taking place in 1919? Thank you so much, Christine

I've found that norse mythology had a concept of unmanly sexuality which resembles roman attitudes toward sex, which could conceivable lead to homophobic attitudes although apparently the ancient romans didn't mind homosexuality as long as you weren't the submissive partner so maybe that's how it was with the norse as well. That said, I haven't found any other evidence even suggestive of homophobia that predates the abrahamic doctrine. Do you know of any?

I was recently told that the Phoenicians that settled Carthage were the same people as the biblical Caananites. Were Carthaginians capable of conversing with Jews hundreds of miles away in the Levant?

In a book called How the Catholic Church Built Western Civilization, the claim is made that the first true university was founded by the Catholic Church. This book is certainly a polemic of sorts, but I was always told that the first true universities were founded by practitioners of Islam. Can anyone shed some light on this issue?
