When did Greek/Roman paganism “begin” and when did it “end”?

I put the words in quotes cause there’s generally no definite start date to any religion, and there are modern practitioners of just about any religion to this day. I guess if I were to expand my question out, it would be “what is the earliest evidence of Greek paganism and/or the estimated dating of its early practice; and when did both Greek and Roman paganism become minor world religions, completely overtaken by other religions, especially Christianity?”

If A.C. means After Christ, then why doesn't the year start on December 25th or on April(when Jesus died)?

A.C. I assume means how many years passed after Jesus but I don't know if it means birth or death.

Where did the germ of the Lost Cause of the Confederacy begin?

In almost every history lecture on the subject I've heard that the Lost Cause began in the 1870s and 1880s and it was solidified in the 1900s by the United Daughters of the Confederacy.

I came across Marx' Oct. 20th 1861 letter to Engels where he said that he was tired of seeing the British press classify the American Civil War ("The Economist, The Examiner, The Saturday Review and tutti quanti expounded the theme further.") as a "tariff war" and he seems to clearly address most of the popular Lost Cause talking points.

This left me confused. Do you start with Jubal A. Early's articles to the Southern Historical Society, the contemporary British press, or elsewhere? If it was the British press, why would that argument have been popular for the at the time?

Are there any specific African countries the United Kingdom got their slaves from during the Atlantic Slave Trade?

To provide a little bit of backstory:

My dad’s parents come from the Caribbean (his father from St. Kitts and his mother from the British Virgin Islands), and very little is known about his family history. My grandfather was an orphan and thus didn’t know where his parents or grand parents came from. While my grandmother did know do some older relatives, she passed away almost 6 years ago. I am very interested in my family history and it is really unfortunate that I may never know where my paternal family came from.

I am aware that my ancestors most likely came from Western Africa, but I would really like to have a more specific insight on the specific ethnic group or nation they once belonged to. Does the UK government keep any archives with ledgers that may provide information on where their slaves came from?

Another interesting thing I would like to add is that it seems like my dad’s family has adopted European names. For example, my grandfather’s birth name is Cerdric, while his middle name is VanDyke. Are there any historical reasons behind this as well?

TL;DR: Would like some specific information on the Atlantic Slave Trade.

Why did Henry VIII marry “old” wives?

Everyone knows that Henry VIII divorced his first wife in part to have a living male heir, but I’ve always been confused by his choices. He married Anne, who was in her 30s. Then he married Jane, who was in her late 20s. I’ve always wondered why he would not have chosen a much younger wife, who is more likely to be fertile and has more time to have children. Is there any reasoning in his choice other than him simply preferring these women? Wouldn’t his advisors have recommended someone else?

Not your normal post. Would anyone here be able to tell me who these men are on on the stage/podium? I believe at least some of them were generals. This would have been taken somewhere between 1958 and 1961. My grandfather is the body guard in the right most corner (Photo attached)

Did they do backflips in the middle ages?

Today gymnastics is a popular hobby, and since many tricks don’t require any equipment, I was wondering if people did tricks like standing backflips back in the Middle Ages. I was imagining medieval knights in full armor doing tricks but I realize that might not be very realistic. So if gymnastics was a thing back then, what part did it play in different cultures?

I’ve heard that Arrian is considered the most reliable ancient authority on Alexander the Great. Why is a man who lived 4 centuries after his subject matter our best primary source on the subject of such an important figure? Are there really no other earlier accounts that are worthwhile?

Have Muslims, Jews, and Christians always recognized that they worshipped the same God?

I know they used to be called the “People of the Book,” but were they aware of the shared ancestry of their religions, so to speak? Or was there a time when Christians or Muslims or Jews did not see it that way? Thank you!

Poland regained it's independence in November 1918, but did anyone really care about Polish independence during the First World War?

I am aware that thousands of Poles fought on both sides of the war, in the hopes that their countries would reward their sacrifices with independence and that Germany and Austria-Hungary tried to set up a puppet Polish monarchy in 1916, but did anyone, in either the Allies or the Central Powers, really give two seconds thought about Polish independence? Had the Allies won the war with Russia still in the war, would they have encouraged Russia to give Poland it's independence or would they have been perfectly willing to allow Russia to keep Poland as part of their territory?

Cult of Mithras

I am part of a reenactment group of roman soldiers, and we recently talked about the cult of Mithras and its reputation of being popular with soldiers. After a little bit of personal research, I was only able to find little information (except a lot of things saying mithraism is either very similar or very dissimilar from early christianity).

How much do we know about the Cult of Mithras, what do we know, and how popular was it?

(A personal follow up: if we wanted to reenact being followers of Mithras as soldiers, what would be some basics we would need to know?)

Is there a way to study history in an unbiased manner? If so, how?

I've noticed my lack of arguments when I'm having discussions on certain topics, and so, I want to learn more about them (listed below). Considering most of these topics attract people with different views, how can I form an opinion in a way that I'm not deeply misguided by a specific author?

Say, for example, that I want to learn about Fidel Castro and some of Cuba's history. Texts written by right-wing authors would probably be very different to texts written by left-wing authors. What's a good approach to learn, then?

Off the top of my head, things I want to learn about:

  1. Augusto Pinochet
  2. Fidel Castro
  3. Che Guevara
  4. Venezuela

Thanks.

How did heavy cavalry operate in regards to their lances?

My understanding is that lances would break upon landing on a target, or at the very least they would become embedded in their target. Would knights and other heavy cavalry have to have multiple lances prepared for multiple charges? Would they cycle in and out of the front of a formation? Would they have to go back to a squire who would have another lance ready? Or were lances capable of multiple uses?

Edit: Or were lances only used on the first charge and arming swords used in consecutive charges?
