Is the history really trustworthy?

I’m half American and half Japanese. I go to international school so I am taught by history teachers from different countries like UK, Australia, Romania, Canada and etc. Having two nationalities and being taught from teachers with different nationalities really confuses me with the history because every countries are so biased! For example, WW2 are taught so differently in each country. I’m not going to say how it’s different, because it’s not the main point here. Anyways, it might be just because I’m not smart enough to understand the history, but I sometimes feel like every history is a full of lies. I don’t know what to trust.

Was Lenin Bisexual?

Having read the Zinoviev-Lenin correspondence the letters strongly imply a more-than-only-political relationship between the two Revolutionaries.

But I know Lenin had several mistresses like Inessa Armand beside his wife.

This would mean he was bisexual.

Or are the Zinoviev letters fake? ( I can only find them in Russian, but I guess that's a taboo topic there anyway).

Requesting book rec: Native tribes of Florida

I am interested in their history and culture, but even moreso, I want to know how they lived: what they grew, how they grew it, how they cooked it, how they caught/hunted animals, what they lived in, what they slept in, what sort of social policies and issues did they have, how did they conduct warfare...

what did life look like in concentration camps?

i know they were essentially there to perish, individually and as a people, but did what did the day look like? im german (sort of, my parents migrated here so i have somewhat ambivalent feelings about my germanness, i mean i dont feel like the AFD is rooting for "germans" like me haha) so ive seen the documentaries depicting them and i mean, yeah, you all know how that felt. but were there moments of humanity? children plaing with toys, loved ones having sex? songs being sung? i know i sound super duper noeliberal and white asking this, looking for good in the pure evil, but ive been thinking about life and how we create meaning and moments of connection and so forth and was wondering if there was something like that in like auschwitz.

i am not trying to romanticise or in any way disrespect the horror of what the holocaust as a doing of humanity was and concentration camps were the executioners of.

And a second qeustion: did the jews hear stories about the camps? did they believe them? how did they explain what happened to fellow jews disappearing in the night?

Boatload of questions, but you guys usually give really good answes, i wanna try my luck :)

Did Adolf Hitler ever visit the front lines during WWII?

I don't think I ever saw a picture of Hitler visiting the troops while an operation was still going. I might be wrong, hence the question.

Book recommendations on Arctic and Polar exploration

Hello! I am currently reading through the first two Elisha Kane books covering the first two US Grinnell expeditions in search of the lost John Franklin party. I am interested in learning more about the age of polar and Arctic exploration after this book. I know Shackleton's books are considered a must but I'm curious what other books would be recommended and are there any good overall "primers" on the age of polar exploration? I love primary sources such as these Kane books and Shackleton, but there must be some recommendations which encompass the culture and almost "fad" if you will of the polar explorers and main stream cultures seeming bug interest from the mid 19th century to the early 20th. I was unable to find any books listed in the reading recommendations on the sidebar.

Thanks!

Female western artists, photographers and writers in MENA area in the 19th century.

I am doing a research about representation and misrepresentation of Middle East and North Africa women in 1800s. Almost all the material I found is produced by males and I am curious to found a little more about the female gaze. My reaserch is focused more on photography and art, but I would like some interesting contribute from female authors. How these women looked at MENA 1800s women? I have already seen paintings by Henriette Browne and Josephine Jerichau-Baumann and I have read some travel journal entries written by Ida Pfeiffer and Ida Hahn-Hahn.

How did Rome become so associated with the colour red in popular culture?

Red is frequently the colour associated with Rome in digital strategy games, and it often features as the background colour for the famous SPQR symbol (with eagle and laurels) and the colour of legionary "uniforms" in popular imagination.

How did this colour in particular become so associated with Rome when the most important colour to the Romans themselves as far as I understand it was purple? Or was red a lot more prominent to the Romans than I think?

Was chivalry really the barbaric, misogynist set of laws that it is portrayed as?

We're currently reading the Canterbury Tales in our class, and in many of the tales (but specifically the knight's tale), chivalry is portrayed as treating love as war. The woman didn't get a say whatsoever, and the man was controlling absolutely, almost winning her through sport. The Wife of Bath points this out in her tale, showing a chivalric knight seeing a beautiful maiden and... raping her.

Is this how it actually was in the middle ages, or is Chaucer exaggerating for literary purpose?

What year would be the earliest year before the mass migration to the Western U.S for the Gold Rush? What were some other lesser known routes to the coast? What material were houses made of the further west you got? And other questions.

Hey guys, I'm considering starting to write a story taking place in the Western U.S during the early frontier years, and I'm just looking for a bit of info.

What kind of routes were taken out west that are less well known? Think Oregon Trail.

Would houses have been made of would the further west you got? Would they have been brick, log cabins, or more traditional framed houses? Did they even have framed houses back then? Would they have gone up pretty quickly in a fire if they were wood?

What would the years have been that would have a good amount of people migrating west, but nowhere near as much as the very near Gold Rush period?

Were there a lot of what you.might call highwaymen back then? I believe, I may be wrong, but Native American attacks were fairly common, but was there a good amount of Caucasian people who were attacking travelers?

When was the first West coast to Midwest/east coast mail system started? How efficient would it have been compared to the Pony Express?

Thanks guys! I appreciate any insight you have into the matter.

Found nazi badges in a box of my grandparents stuff, not sure what’s real, what’s not

📷

Cleaning my parents garage, I come across a box of my grandparents stuff from around when they were married (1948). Entire box is filled with letters, boxes, random stuff dated between 46-51.

Among the items in there were these badges, arm band and flags(?). There are no grand parents alive to confirm/ give context and no one I knew about on that side of the family fought in ww2 in the euro theater (had an uncle who was a mechanic in pacific theater).

Philanthropy in Ancient Rome

I'm hoping someone can give me a general overview of philanthropic practice in Ancient Rome and point me towards some texts on the subject.

Additionally, I'm curious as to how (or if) ongoing costs for philanthropic projects were passed on to the people. For example, if a wealthy Roman paid for the construction of a public bath would he also pay for the operational and maintenance costs of that bath? Or would those costs be passed on to the taxpayer?

Thanks!

Thursday Reading & Recommendations | November 22, 2018

Previous weeks!

Thursday Reading and Recommendations is intended as bookish free-for-all, for the discussion and recommendation of all books historical, or tangentially so. Suggested topics include, but are by no means limited to:

  • Asking for book recommendations on specific topics or periods of history

  • Newly published books and articles you're dying to read

  • Recent book releases, old book reviews, reading recommendations, or just talking about what you're reading now

  • Historiographical discussions, debates, and disputes

  • ...And so on!

Regular participants in the Thursday threads should just keep doing what they've been doing; newcomers should take notice that this thread is meant for open discussion of history and books, not just anything you like -- we'll have a thread on Friday for that, as usual.

How did Spartans treat the dead of their enemies?

When Spartans won a battle, what did they do with the dead that weren't theirs? Did they burn them? Display them as a warning sign? Respect them? Spartans were warriors, and they're often portrayed as brutal and merciless, so I'm wondering how they treated the bodies of their enemies.

Why is Serbia so much poorer than Croatia and Slovenia?

Serbia is ranked on #85 on PPP (income per capita) while Slovenia and Croatia are a healthy 30+ positions ahead on this ranking (World Bank). I know Bosnia are poorer, but I didn't expect the difference between Serbia and Slovenia to be such a landslide. Didn't expect the average Serbiam to be poorer than Brazilian.
