An old map posted somewhere on Reddit included ”Screnfenni” in the Scandinavian area. Only ONE single search result appears when you google that.

THIS IS NOT AN EXAMPLE SEEKING QUESTIONS, RATHER I'M TRYING TO UNDERSTAND WHAT SEEMS LIKE A GENERAL TREND, AND TO EXPLAIN THAT TREND I WILL USE EXAMPLES OF WHICH I AM NOT SEEKING MORE
As you can imagine my previous post on this topic got removed.
Anyway, history is full of important people who got titles for their achievements, William is famous for conquering and Simon Bolivar for liberating, thus they are known as William the Conqueror and The Liberator.
And yet there seems to already be a difference with this 2 characters that can be seen all along history, even though many call Simon Bolivar "The Liberator" most people call him simply by his name, not so with William.
And so, when we reach the 19 century characters like Bismarck or Lincoln go titleless, despite being crucial in the history of their respective nations, and despite that enough time has passed since they lived for history to award them such a title if they didn't have it in life.
It gets to the point that today no one would think of giving Obama, Merkel or Putin any title, despite each of them being seemingly influential enough to deserve it.
Not even modern kings or queens get such titles, at least not internationally, no one calls Mohammed Bin Rashid "The Builder" despite it being a good description for his rule, nobody calls Bhumibol "The wise" or something like that.
What happened?

I found it quite hard to write a succinct title question that asked what I wanted to ask - but as the title says. What would urban warfare have looked like between armies presumably armed with melee or generally short-ranged weapons consist of? Was this attrition-style warfare? Was the fighting scattered or was it more an intense series of pitched battles and actions followed by quiet? Did it revolve around siege engineering and the like? Was it less urban warfare as we imagine today, and more what we would think of as a "Siege" with an unbroken fortified position that the opposing force tried to breach?
Finally - was the Alexandrian dynamic unique or was this the "done thing"? What has urban warfare looked like in the pre-firearms era elsewhere?

I am writing a paper for a class about the battle of Lepanto and why it is considered a turning point in the major cultural and political developments of the near and middle east. I was wondering if anyone could offer some broad insights that I may use to guide further research than what I already have. I have learned that the Ottoman empire continued to engage in thorough maritime trade in the Indian ocean and compete with portugal for dominance in the "theater" of India. What I am confused about is that though it seems the Ottomans continued to have success and interactions with outside cultures and a simmering foment of intellectual development, why is it that the Levant and most of the middle east is considered to have "missed out" on the political developments of the Enlightenment and the state building that occured in it's wake? Was it that Western Europe had to wrest an independent state from the Church, and under the Ottomans the state and church were actually one and the same? I have delved into a lot of Ottoman history in an attempt to answer this question but have yet to develop a decent answer as to why Lepanto is considered the turning point. Thanks guys!

Hi. I'm a young teenager from Spain, and the next year I will start my studies at the college.
Since I was 12 years old I knew that what I really wanted to study was history, and I still was sure about it, but a couple of days ago everything messed up in my mind. I already knew that the labour market wasn't very kind with historians, but, is it that bad? The father of a friend of mine told me a particular case of a couple of friends of him who studied history and that weren't able to work in any job related to their degree until their 30s/40s. Also, I plan to move abroad in the future, specifically to Ireland, so I'm not sure if the conditions are the same that here in Spain nor if a historian coming from abroad is really attractive to institutions, universities, etc.
History is what I always wanted to study, but... is it worth? I'm not looking for the classic speech of ''you should study what you really want to study''. I already know that, but is it just possible to live from this degree?

I've recently heard that the BEF and the French Army were in combination larger than the Wehrmacht during the Phoney War, why did not the Allies take advantage of the Germans being occupied with Norway and other countries and simply attack the Germany?

From my research it looks like the first pictures of the detonations from Operation castle surfaced in the newspapers around 1954. (I could be wrong of course... but this seemed like the time when people really had an idea of it) I am writing a screenplay scene in which some test pilots working for the USAF are reacting to the first pictures of this event. I'm curious as to what could have been or more likely would have been their response. Was this a proud achievement in the eyes of the public? Not a big deal? Were we having any reservations? Or larger thoughts on future repercussions? Super grateful for any insight here. Thank you kindly.

I have some family photographs of a relative (indicated by the red arrow), and I was hoping a historian could help identify the type of uniform and possibly rank of individuals? I believe they are military uniforms but I am not sure. The photographs are roughly from 1912 in Germany on a ship and at the Berlin Royal Palace (I believe?).
Any information would be much appreciated!

I found this photo amongst a pile of old family photos, but no one that's still around in my family know who the photo is of or where it is. With taking a photo of the photo, you can now see in much better detail what the men were wearing and wondered if this, or the trophies on front of them could be a clue to who and where they are? https://imgur.com/a/emakDYz

Is it just Caesar's letters, or is it a result of more "modern" interest in Caesar, such as Shakespeare's and other 16th century playwright's telling Caesar's story?

I see photos on Reddit and other sites of old gun-sword/gun-axe and gun-halberd combinations. Have they seen any real use in battle or have they always just been a novelty?
Edit: Turns out I don't know how to look for threads. there are like 200 of these. Sorry guys!!

I mean: how did archaeologists/egyptologists/linguists reconstruct stuff like 'Wanupt' and 'Woseer' from the Greek forms? Did we have any pronounceable texts or something similar?
(Also x-posted to r/linguistics just in case).

I looked online, but honestly I can't really figure out what is a good source on certain subjects anymore. I am looking for a scholarly, in-depth history of western fashion. I checked the reading list and the only fashion book I saw was African fashion. Thank you very much!

I have a hard time believing that they simply threw those dresses on a couple wire hangers in the closet. I think they traveled with large steamer trunks, but if they stayed at a hotel overnight, did they throw their dress over the back of a chair? And those huge ornate hats, I have never seen a photo of one hanging off a hat rack, so where were they stored when a hatbox was unavailable? 🤔
