I have been trying to find a concrete answer for this on google but have only found guesses and myths as to why this is.

Today:
Welcome to this week's instalment of /r/AskHistorians' Sunday Digest (formerly the Day of Reflection). Nobody can read all the questions and answers that are posted here, so in this thread we invite you to share anything you'd like to highlight from the last week - an interesting discussion, an informative answer, an insightful question that was overlooked, or anything else.

I've heard this from a bunch of people but it seems like an urban legend to me. The claim has been analysed in the U.S.A. and studies have been written on it, claiming that the reports of spitting are either untrue or very exaggerated.
I have not been able to find any information on this as it relates to Australia specifically.

Hello r/askhistorians
I'm writing a paper on Congress and I was just wondering how I have to cite the Congressional Records, particularly the appendices and the discussions in the House of Representatives and Senate.
Thank you

I sort of have a very vague picture of slave-ports or barracoons existing, but who were the people handing over the slaves and receiving the payment? What relationship did they have with the local political structures?

I've heard this claim from numerous people from the Balkans; does this hold any water?

I am working on a game project which set in late medieval times. I want it to be as realistic as possible. I decided to use real names of cities, castles and some villages of European Kingdoms (Kingdom of England, Kingdom of France, HRE, Ottoman Empire etc.). Can you tell me if there is a source that may help me?

Hey reddit, I've recently become very much interested in world politics, but the more I learn, the more I realise that I don't really have a strong enough foundation of world history. I am very much interested in learning more about World War 1 & 2, The Cold War etc.
Basically what I'm looking for are books on not the violence aspect of the wars themselves, but the political landscapes and the tensions that led to them, the Soviet Union, Hitler's Germany, socialism, and other general foreign events of significance.
I know that there are probably no completely unbiased sources out there, but I'd just like your recommendations nonetheless.
Thanks guys.

Most Australians will be familiar with the AIATSIS Map of Indigenous Australia, which shows some hundreds of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander groups (social, political or language).
I've noticed that American maps will often superimpose an additional region on top of groupings, e.g. the Cherokee and Cheyenne are both "Plains Indians". It looks like this was the work of Alfred Kroeber:
I was wondering if Aboriginal Australians or others had ever identified such broader groups (whether by region or some other affiliation) and - if so - whether those broader groups are still considered meaningful.

e.g. why does Ibn Sina become Avicenna, Ibn Rushd become Averroes and Al Khwarizmi become Algoritmi? Was it easier to remember the Latinized names?

I know its kinda of a ridiculous question but my friends and I have been arguing about the question and I would love to know.

Are there any books on telling events from the opposite side of the winners in history without being propaganda. Like South Asians being invaded by French or Japanese. Turkey losing all its territory. The White Russians after losing to the Red Russians. Etc...

Looking back at ancient times/medieval humanity seems to create a perception of this stale, no-fun world of pain and misery. I assume much of this is true, but I must ask, were there many forms of shitposting or other similar things? I've been to some museums in my day, and seen some stone carved genitalia, but they are always given descriptions of romantic statements and beautiful gifts to lovers. None of them say anything like, "after Gaius burned every field in the village of Saepinum, the villagers repeatedly carved him messages such as these in the relics on display": "Hey Gaius, I hope you eat this" "Gaius choke on this and go to tartarus you lazy bastard" "To Gaius: A gift" etc... The way I describe shitposting in this scenario, is things that are purely worthless comedy statements or insults, and general immaturity and stupidity.

i’ve been looking through old boxes of things and found a very old paper dating back to 1918. I’ve searched it up, but to result i found nothing. It says
“The mess-kit this number is a tribute to all our girls who said “number please” in our own language over there.”
Does anyone know what it means? It says volume one and inside the paper is talking about women rights.

I just read this text that says exactly what the title means. Is there anyone to confirm this or shed some light on this topic?

Specifically, I’m looking for books that are not necessarily aimed at scholars, but would be well received by academics.
