What happened to Soviet Nuclear devices when the USSR collapsed?

I am pretty sure a movie alleges that nuclear weapons couls have disappeared after the Cold War. Call of Duty uses it as plot points. I saw a history film on the Davy Crocket nuclear system and it got me thinking. Did the USSR in its closing days have a prptocal that was in place and followed to insure that the new Russian state maintained complete control? Are any missing?

On Christianity in Arabia

Recently there was this news about Saudi Arabia tolerating churches being built. I don't know if that's true or not, but it has nonetheless resorted to discussions and claims by many. One of the claims I have seen in this website is that Arabia always had significant Christian communities and religious tolerance until the House of Saud came to be. Usually I wouldn't take this claim seriously but it was upvoted by dozens so it may be some belief that many have. How true or false is that statement? And was what the reality of Christianity in Arabia since late antiquity?

What books are best for a middle school student wanting to challenge/ stimulate their learning?

My history teacher recurrently suggests I research into topic due to my fascination, but often neglects to mention what books (or other media also welcome) are optimal, especially for our areas on learning.

Would it be possible to have some recommendations in the following four fields: Early 20th century Russia Post World War one Germany and the rise of Hitler Ancient Persia Archaic Greece

Extra but not essential: American and possibly some French revolution reading.

Some more obscure or unique suggestions are especially welcome.

Thank you in advance for the help!

Were WWI trenches the way they are commonly thought of?

Were the WWI trenches the well dug and deep style seen in many of the media about or set in the period, or were they different, like just some relatively shallow ditches in the ground connecting foxholes and artillery craters?

Edit: For further specification, I am speaking chiefly of the western front and for both “sides” (Germany, A-H. France, Britain). An example of the trenches I’m speaking of may be seen in All Quiet on the Western Front, and many other movies and documentaries.

Did North Korea take a side in the Soviet-Afghan War?

I am unclear on what role, if any, North Korea would play in the Soviet-Afghan War. I know that China was training and arming groups opposed to the Soviets, but did North Korea provide aid or praise to the Soviets, assist the Chinese, or stay uninvolved and quiet?

Sources related to the Chinese equivalent to Operation Cyclone would also be appreciated.

What did ancient Mediterranean civilizations like the Greeks or Romans actually think laid west beyond the Atlantic Ocean?

Sorry if this has been asked somewhere. I found several threads inquiring as to why they never attempted to sail across the Atlantic, but I couldn't find any on what they would have expected to find if they did. How accurate were their estimations of the size of the earth and the distance to far eastern lands such as India and China? If they had combined their knowledge of trade routes to the east with measures of the circumference of the earth, wouldn't someone have realized how much empty space was unexplored on the planet? Or were their estimates extremely inaccurate? Did they believe there was nothing but ocean between Western Europe and Eastern Asia?

Recreational drug use in the wild west

It's 1852, and I am a young single man working for just below median income in a medium sized town in California. It is Friday night, and I want to blow off some steam. What recreational drugs could I feasibily lay my hands on? How much of my weekly wage will it cost me? If the sheriff finds out what I have, what is the likely punishment? Will others be interested in participating in the drug use?

Japan government during WW2 is ideologically fascist?

For every WW2 history reading and documentary, Japan always group up with Germany and Italy for "The Fascist Club"(Axis). However, I'm quite confuse in term of ideology. Italy with Mussolini introducing idea of Fascism and Hitler rallying the Nazism ideology. Japan is bit different because they don't have ideology or something to against Jew or capitalism. Their conquest for resource much more similar to idea of previous imperial Europe government pre-WW1.

So, is Japan government in WW2 consider as fascist due to relationship with Germany and Italy or there are aspect of ideology running the government that similar to fascism but in different name. Thanks!

When his presidency became embattled by scandal, were there people defending Nixon and proclaiming his innocence?

If you turn on any news at the present, you are inundated with different scandal rumors and accusations involving President Trump. Then you have the entire White House denying anything and everything and lobbing back accusations of persecution and witch hunts.

Looking back at Nixon’s presidency and the Watergate scandal, I have never heard anyone try to dispute or mitigate the president’s guilt/culpability in the matter. At the time were there staffers, Congressional Republicans, or other politicians willing to “die on their own swords” in defense of Nixon as we see today with President Trump? I am NOT assuming any guilt on the part of President Trump, but before he stepped down as President, Nixon was also facing accusations and I have to assume there was a period of uncertainty. As I see it we are in that uncertain period for Trump, maybe things work out for him, maybe not. I’m not trying to start a political debate, I’m just curious how the accusations against Nixon were received? And if there were people fighting to defend Nixon, when did that stop?
