In movies with a castle defending it's walls the archers always have the whole NOCK DRAW FIRE thing, but wouldn't it just be better to have them all shooting as many arrows as possible?

I'm curious about how was the procedure to get into the Royal Navy for the average sailor, especially if there was an official range of age or you could just go there and ask to enlist. I also wonder if there was something like a test or list of requirements, if you had to compromise for a minimum time of service and how was the beginning and progress within the scale.

I was surprised to learn today, via Wikipedia, that the Library of Alexandria may not have been destroyed in a cataclysmic fire as I previously thought but actually encountered a slow and steady decline. However, I see that most of the article linked above is marked as requiring expert opinion and further citations, so I thought I'd ask some experts.
What happened to the Library and its works? Did many end up in the House of Wisdom at Baghdad (as I've also previously heard)? How important was the Library to the Hellenistic world?

Considering there was, as far as I am aware, no common language each party could communicate with.

Hi there. I was thinking about make it for some days, I finally can write it (I guess). First of all, you need to know some stuff. I'm from Brazil and I do accounting on college ( it is a big deal here because the complexity of fiscal law). I really hate do it. I always liked of history, I watched history channel and documentaries on early YouTube and main cause why I started to learn English (to watch more documentaries) but here the think about do history is for lazy people, people who consuming drugs... People always repressed me about do history. Then, to the problem. I really think I like history to be my graduation on college but here I have several problems with it. I mentioned I live in Brazil, nobody really care to academical knowledge, I mean researchers, professors and academical careers in general. Another problem is the government to be populist did some incentive to everyone do college resulting on massive amount of people with college degree without a job. Saturation of market. Another problem is a kind of ostracism about the career. The dangerous problem is teaching on public school, almost all of them is dominate for "treinees of crime" and low salary. I almost forgot it, the ideology bias on humanities are too high you can be ostracized on academy too. I see it myself. I don't know, guys. I think do history is my passion but we don't live that way. Tell me what you think about it or your experience, everything will be helpful.
Sorry about any gramatical error.

I am wondering does any historian have any clue if Reis knew anything about Antartica or if there was any landmass up there?

I hope this doesn't count as a rule violation but I need help with a specific argument. I am sick of a small group within a hobbyist group I participate in defending the racist views of the Lost Cause movement by claiming that the American Civil War was fought for southern independence due to the cultural and traditional oppression of the south by the north.
I used to be familiar with more sources on this subject, particularly C. Vann Woodward, but it's been so long since I've studied American history that I'm unable to consult sources (I've sold many college textbooks anyway) I don't have and I'm not sure what good texts I might buy. I hate any viewpoint that I know I can prove is factually wrong and I hate to see new life being breathed into a viewpoint that needs to die.

Stonehenge was a pagan structure, right? an its very very old. how has someone or a group or people not destroyed it by now? I would have thought that newly converted Christians would g\have destroyed it. a lot of awesome ancient things were destroyed by people.

Hey, I'm trying to find Maps that would have been given to Wehrmacht commanders etc. specifically for the Denmark and Norway Campaigns but google-fu powers have been failing me.
Does anyone have them or know where they could be found?
Thanks

Obviously no one ever slew a dragon or was the son of a God, but what I'm wondering is if there are any records of particularly exceptional warriors that may be accurate. Stories like the Illiad or the Viking sagas are full of great warriors, but are there any actual cases of noteworthy individuals based on their fighting abilities? I have always assumed that in warfare for most of history, individual fighting ability accounted for very little and equipment or other factors were more important, but I am still curious. Aslo, if this question has been asked before, I apologize.

If you're a historian, do you have to study every era or just certain eras? I only find the middle ages interesting. So, if I were to become one would I be able to just focus on the middle ages?

What do you do for a job? What kind of area do you live in (urban, suburban, rural) What do you think the job market is like for young history majors today?
I start college this fall, and I never really considered majoring in history until recently, so I don't know much about careers, any info would help. My current plans are to study Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering. I would like to focus on WWI/WWII and basically American and European history from 1800's to now. I also study German and French so that would obviously be helpful for a career in history.

Re-reading an oldish (2007) but still very interesting book Disease: The extraordinary stories behind histories deadliest killers by Mary Dobson. In the section on the plague, the following passages intrigued me:
In the section on the Plague of Justinian: "Roofs were removed from the fortified towers of Constantinople so that the dead bodies could be piled high. Some of the corpses were tossed onto rafts and allowed to drift out to sea"
In the section on the Black Death: "In Venice the dead were dropped in gondolas and rowed out to sea with cries of 'corpi morti, corpi morti"
Is there any evidence to support the accuracy of these claims, or is the author merely being descriptive?

Im looking for a general history on World War I, preferably a multivolume. If you know any good single volumes, that is fine, I already own John Keegan's "The First World War" and have already been recommended "The Great War: A Combat History of the First World War" by Peter Hart

I'd like a recommendation for a Multi volume history of WWII, or any very good Single volume histories. I'm looking for something hopefully on the scale of Shelby Foote's "the civil war" but for WW2
