The USA has many of its largest cities right on the East Coast. However, Canadian cities in New Brunswick, PEI, and Nova Scotia are on the smaller side, with the larger cities up the Saint Lawrence. Why this difference? Does the advantage of the river outweigh the advantage of being on the ocean?

They got pushed back by the Serbs, Russians, and Italians (all with relatively weak armies), only to get bailed out each time when Germany sent troops and leaders over for support.
I've heard that it had to do with their armies being multi-lingual and unable to fully understand orders. Surely it must be more than this?

All of the classics courses I've taken seem to focus on Christianity's rise (persecutions from Nero to Diocletian, conversion of Constantine I, conversions by various barbarian kings and chieftains, etc.), but I want to know more about the decline of Graeco-Roman polytheism.
At what point did the pagans fall into the minority? At what point did they themselves begin to suffer persecution? What is its last attested evidence in Christian Europe? Did it die out later in the Latin West, or the Greek East? I just want a general outline of how the old religion clung to life then disappeared. Were most farmers in say, Gaul or Italy still praying to Bacchus, Jupiter, etc. in 300AD? How about in 600AD?

For example, in France - you go from "Clovis, King of the Francs" to "Louis XIV, King of France". At what point did the nomenclature change to be based on the land that the monarch 'owned' (de jure or de facto), compared to the people who inhabited it?

Is there any literature or primary sources on this subject?

Since the anti-war protests against the Vietnam War during the 70s, many people attained a different view about warfare and managed to see its ugly and destructive side and the glorification of warfare has diminished since then and it is not the same as it was during older times such as the Greeks and the Romans viewed warfare as triumph, honour and glory (more emphasis on personal glory from the Greeks), the knights during the Crusades demanded to have Jerusalem becuase they believe it was rightfully theirs even though it had no strategic purposes and the saying "Deus Vult" was their warcry.
So if anyone protested against warfare (especially against their nation's side of the war) were they treated differently or shunned upon by others?

Every time I read about a Viking hoard being discovered the treasure seems to be silver. Was there a religious purpose to silver? Or was it simply more common than gold?

Karl Marx wasn't around to witness the rise of the Soviet Union led by Lenin and Stalin, but has Marx ever thought if Communism ever being ran in such a way. Leaders like Stalin, Mao, Pot, Kim Jung-Un, did he ever think this would happen? If so, to what extent?

Hello /r/askhistorians!
We (the Art & History Museum in Brussels) are honored to be able to do an AMA here with one of our curators, Serge Lemaitre!
I've asked Serge for a short bio, so you know who you're asking questions (thanks Serge!):
'I am an archaeologist from the Université Libre de Bruxelles. I made my PhD about the rock paintings of the Great Lakes region in Canada. The rock art became my speciality and I worked for 7 years on petroglyphs from Syria and 4 years on Easter Island. In the same time, I made several exhibitions (“Indian Summer. The art of the North American First Nations”, “Lascaux”…) and I am preparing the next temporary exhibition of the museum “ Inca Dress Code” dedicated to the textiles and the jewellery of the pre-Columbian Andes. My main research for the moment is about the pre-Columbian mummies of Peru and Chile. I can answer to questions about this topic but also any questions related to the next exhibition or rock art."
The best known of our mummies is this one, made famous by Hergé.
Serge spent the last month in Chili and Peru trying to find out more about the origin of this (and other) mummies, you can read more about what he found here.
Serge will be answering questions on thursday 19/4 between 13pm and 16pm.
Let us know what you would like to know!
Update: Serge has signed out, we hope you found this AMA as interesting as we did!

Please Be Aware: We expect everyone to read the rules and guidelines of this thread. Mods will remove questions which we deem to be too involved for the theme in place here. We will remove answers which don't include a source. These removals will be without notice. Please follow the rules.
Some questions people have just don't require depth. This thread is a recurring feature intended to provide a space for those simple, straight forward questions that are otherwise unsuited for the format of the subreddit.
Here are the ground rules:
Questions should be clear and specific in the information that they are asking for.
Questions which ask about broader concepts may be removed at the discretion of the Mod Team and redirected to post as a standalone question.
We realize that in some cases, users may pose questions that they don't realize are more complicated than they think. In these cases, we will suggest reposting as a stand-alone question.
Answers MUST be properly sourced to respectable literature. Unlike regular questions in the sub where sources are only required upon request, the lack of a source will result in removal of the answer.
Academic secondary sources are prefered. Tertiary sources are acceptable if they are of academic rigor (such as a book from the 'Oxford Companion' series, or a reference work from an academic press).
The only rule being relaxed here is with regard to depth, insofar as the anticipated questions are ones which do not require it. All other rules of the subreddit are in force.

In other words, what did they do to him that caused his utter disdain. I like to think I know a lot about Jackson, but this is an area I'd like more info in. Thanks!

And why was is it seen as such a turning point in the war?

I’m watching a documentary on the final days of the Vietnam war for the second time now and there’s just one burning question that I have. Why didn’t president ford take action after the north invaded the south again? I know that ground fighting was disastrous because the Americans were not prepared or trained for guerrilla warfare, and support for the war was extremely low. But from what this documentary says, the north Vietnamese didn’t invade earlier because they were afraid that Nixon would bring back American air power, so at the very least why didn’t ford use the Air Force?
