Are there any personal diaries from former slave owners? How they felt about the American Civil War, slavery, reconstruction, etc?

As historians, what would you want today's populations to record in diaries, blogs/vlogs, etc. to better assist historians of the future?

The title explains it but what are things, as historians, you wish others would do to "pass on the torch" of knowledge to the future generations?

I would imagine that digital photos and videos would be incredible but wonder if the formats will be compatible 500 years from now.

I am curious and hope this is not an improper question for this great sub. Thanks!

EDIT:

Also, I would imagine that each person has a unique perspective to contribute (military veteran, homosexual single-parents in Idaho, artist in Berlin, etc.). How would each of these individuals best capture their experiences for your future counterparts to dissect and further historical knowledge?

So, how did Germany manage to move their tanks through the Ardennes forest?

I know France and the Low Countries were practically lost because Germany got their army through one place that was either not fortified or defended by hundreds of thousands of troops. But I never understood, how? It's a thick forest and it seems like those big panzers could've never made it through. I tried finding an answer to this question but I came up short of an answer.

Was Russia destined to become a superpower in the 20th century

Did people predict that Russia was going to be the 2nd most powerful country in the world, in say 1900. As bad as leninism was, most of Russia's allies were obtained due to their shared believe in leninism or their supposed anti-imperialism. If it hadn't been for leninism, there would be very little reason to ally with Russia, as opposed to the United States.

Japan's involvement in the first world war

Hello historians, I have always been a history nerd and I love the subject. I am especially interest in the 20th century period and I enjoy watching documentaries about history subjects.

I just would like to ask why is it that Japan joined the Allies in WW1 and what contribution did they offer. Was it just Japan's way of sneaky territorial gain or something else?

Sacramental Wine and herd immunity

This is a multi part question.

  1. In Catholic dominant towns/villages/communities, did the introduction of sacramental wine assist in developing a herd immunity for that community and decrease the mortality rate due to infections as compared to communities which did not have a similar practice.

2)Was wine able to be used in such a widespread manner or was it replaced with a more readily available substitute?

  1. If wine was readily available, was it's alcohol content high enough to kill infectious agents?

How could Hitler outperform economically the Republic of Weimar so much in a such short time?

I generally understand that the post WWI German economy was a result of the Versailles Treaty, which was meant to be punishing expecially by the French, but was ignoring it "all it took" for Hitler for turning a country on starvation (and that famously printed one billion reichmark bills that were brought about in wheelbarrows for day to day purchases) in a successful, healthy economy in such a short time?

I’m a skilled craftsman (stonemason or blacksmith) living in mid-seventh century Mercia (modern day English Midlands). What is my day to day like?

Recently read about Penda of Mercia and how Bede describes him as “a most warlike man of the royal race of the Mercians”.

Got me thinking what life would be like as a reasonably skilled, above-average citizen around about 650 AD when there were small, warring states in Britain all vying for power (or survival).

Also, Catholic influences conflicting with the traditionally pagan societies of the day sounds like it would make for an interesting element to these warring groups.

Caligula and the senators wifves

I know there have been several questions about Caligula and his madness.

I would just like to know, if the rumors or the myths about Caligula creating a brothel and forcing the wives of the senators to work for him in it are true ? Are there any evidence by Dio for example ?

I guess the way it is shown in the movie Caligula from 1979 is definitely not true.

Thanks.

Do Star Wars laser colors match up with tracer round colors of belligerents of Korea/Vietnam/Cold War Era?

I have heard that in Star Wars the irl/out of universe reasoning for the Rebel Alliance lasers being red and the Empire's being green is that post WW2 US and NATO tracer rounds were red while USSR and China's tracer rounds were green. This would cause American veterans of Korea and Vietnam to associate red with allies and green with enemies due to Soviet/Chinese support of the opposing forces in those wars.

So that said I have 3 questions

1 Is the color distinction I described of red for ally green for enemy accurate for that post WW2 time period?

2 If 1 is accurate is it due to who was supplying the tracer rounds? US to American service men and USSR/China to Korea/Vietnam?

3 If 1 and 2 are accurate was this information consciously used by the people making Star Wars?

Where did the native American "Samoset" learn to speak English?

I was taught in highschool (and reminded today by aTIL) that the native Americans who interacted with the early pilgrims spoke some English, and that they learned it from fishermen in Maine.

I was under the impression that the pilgrims were some of the first English speaking Europeans to come to North America in large numbers. Who other than them was crossing the Atlantic around then? Where did they come from? Was crossing the Atlantic actually a common thing for fishermen to do or were they massively lost?

How was metallurgy, specifically smelting, casting and forging, discovered by our ancestors in the first place?

My husband and I recently built a furnace and have been smelting copper, bronze and even made an iron bloom last week. We enjoy primitive technology and a lot of times when trying to emulate and recreate how our Neolithic, Bronze Age and Iron Age ancestors did things, it becomes sort of apparent how they figured it out, the first example that comes to mind (that has nothing to do with metal) is that cheese was "discovered" when someone stored milk in a bag made of the stomach of an animal, where that milk mixed with the rennet inside of the stomach and became cheese, but unlike a lot of those things, smelting and forging is not an obvious process, it involves a multitude of deliberate actions, some of which are only applicable to the acts of smelting, casting or forging, I cannot believe that some Neolithic person awoke one day, found some malachite or chalcopyrite in the ground and decided to crush it up into a powder, put it in a furnace, heat it to 1085 degrees Celsius and then cast it — so how was it discovered, or rather how do historians think it was discovered?

In boot camp, recruits to the military are stripped of personalizing human characteristics (hair cut off, given identical clothes/gear, being deprived of privacy, randomly being subject to abuse). Where did this practice come from (it's clearly been thought out)? Has it evolved over time?

perhaps I should say "systematic" as opposed to "clearly thought out", as some have objected to the phrasing (although I still think that's likely a product of design)

I’d like to research America’s involvement in the Middle East from the start to current day. Where to start?

Brit here whose knowledge is very patchy other than recent years. I don’t mind searching each event individually but if there are some better organised recourses online, that would be great.

Or anything that would give me a fairly objective understanding of how the current political climate has formed, thanks!

Is the Sri Lankan government at fault for the creation of the LTTE (Tamil Tigers)?

Basically I am trying to understand the public opinion about why the Tamil Tigers are regarded as so notoriously evil while the Sri Lankan government isn't blamed.

It looks like the Tamil Tigers were formed due to the increasing pressure put on by the Sri Lankan government to suppress Tamil culture. This included language, traditions, the burning of the Jaffna library and all around discrimination and ethnic cleansing. The government seemed to be just as ruthless as the LTTE in their indiscriminate killing of civilians in the Tamil areas.

Why then is the LTTE one of the worst terrorist organizations of all time while the deeds of the Sri Lankan government that instigated their formation and fuelled their grievances not publically condemned?

How do historians focus on one single subject?

I am a college student, wanting to teach high school but also wanting to be well versed in one or two areas of history. How would I go about choosing a field to study in depth? Is it common to just choose something you’re mildly interested in or should I choose something that will relate to my classes I will teach?
