I’m particularly interested in art and poetry, and how this was influenced by the Florentine moral conscious in the aftermath of the Black Death. Can anyone recommend authors, journals, and books that pertain to this topic? Thank you.

Looking back at old pictures and seeing German airships and such is always interesting. I like how they look sort of retro futuristic and I feel like it’d be a cool experience to ride one. Is there a reason they never became too popular as passenger/transportation vehicles? I guess maybe stuff like the Hindenburg accident is a good reason but by now you’d think we’d have better technology for it.

It is now March again, and so I was wondering what the origins of the NCAA basketball tournament were, and why it was so popular? I know the NIT used to be more prestigious/popular, is there a reason the NCAA tournament overtook it?

There are already a bunch of posts I've found on this subreddit that talk about the subject, (like these two that really caught my eye) but it would be very interesting to ask if there's a more general, academic interpretation regarding the cultural phenomenon of "retro", or "nostalgia". In general, the inspiration and assimilation of an older "better" culture into the art and way of thinking of a newer culture. Not only in these days, where examples are plenty and we know of them (80s nostalgia in modern pop music, 50s nostalgia during the 70s, etc.), but any books or articles that talk about examples in other cultures and periods, and talk about this phenomenon in more broader terms. Maybe, for example, in the way Neoclassical architecture wanted to imitate Roman style, but how that also played into the way of thinking during the Enlightenment, just to say something. Maybe examples of how politics have been influenced by older periods that were romanticised (in this case, I can think about a generation in Mexico who lived through the 30-year dictatorship of Porfirio Díaz and after the Revolution longed for a return to those days, having important consequences in the political discourse in the country for many years after that).
I hope that what I'm asking for makes sense, and if so, I'm sure there must already be a great amount of literature regarding the subject. I really hope someone knows of some author or book that treats this topic, and I'm very much looking forward to your suggestions.
Very many thanks in advance!

I was watching the movie Lincoln last night and I noticed something interesting.
In that first scene by the steam boat, one of the U.S soldiers standing behind General Grant appeared to be Native American.
Did the United States army in the 1860s allow Native Americans to be officers? Or were the similar to the restrictions African American soldiers faced?

Basically what it asks in the title. What are the differences between worship in the Roman and Byzantine empires, as well as between the Roman empire and late medieval Catholicism. What were the changes in doctrine, worship practices, worship buildings, and the clergy?

I'm writing summaries of my lecture-notes, and I stumbled across this. I think it's from a lecture, but I'm not quite sure. Perhaps it's from a text book.
My question is how Napoleon would gain favour with the Brits by selling Louisiana to the Americans, when this was after the American Independence.

I can imagine what combat looked like for Roman, hoplite, or medieval armies; but I only have a vague idea of combat during the Three Kingdoms period.

People have been telling me that they'd only be willing to share information if I paid them. But what can you people do that a Google search can't? I'd really like to know!

Did some people believe that the emancipation proclamation was unconstitutional? I know at the time it was divided as to whether or not slaves counted as property or as people. If one claimed they were property could they not also claim that the US government stripping them of their property denied them life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness?

i personally doubt this claim, as it seems that slaves were having sex with everyone (from other slaves to slave owners to native americans) but were slaves bred with specific features in mind?
my question is more about the idea of "breeding" slaves, not the modern day reasons blacks dominate certain sports, which i believe is more cultural.
