I'm looking for textbooks that I could read that give a comprehensive overview of all the major trends in modern historiography. The Modern Historiography Reader seems exactly what I'm looking for, but there's no way for me to access it from where I am. Does anyone know other similar options?

Whenever I see a notice for a runaway slave, the descriptions are so minimal amd vague. How did they ever catch someone states away by just saying, "Tall negro man with scarred back," or, "Runaway Female-age 16 with curly hair and good teeth,"?

I'm watching the miniseries Anzacs, and in Episode 3, a few of the platoon try to convince a soldier to rejoin them after deserting, and he's taken up with a heavily armed group deserters who have organized some distance behind the lines (though close enough to hear the guns) on an old battlefield. Were these groups something that actually occurred? If so, how common?
It seems unlikely to me, but I figured I might as well ask.
Thank you.

Any good sources I should read? Can somebody point me to some good western propaganda? Is there a way to quantify Berlin's value relative to the rest of East Germany by the end of the war?

It is no secret that Germany currently has the strongest major economy in Europe, a tall population, and one of the most educated populations in the world.
Interestingly, the UK has more than 3 million more disabled people than Germany, yet their population is much lower than Germany's
Did Nazi Germany's harsh programs and policies positively impact the current situation in Germany?

I have a lot of respect for this sub. I love reading the really in depth answers here sometimes but to be honest I don't always like the really long submissions. I would love to hear tldrs from you smart folk, with sources I can explore on my own. Is that something you all would be willing to provide?

Why is that Marx opposed the ideas of Utopian Socialism proposed by people like Henri de Saint-Simon, Charles Fourier, etc but at the same time believed a classless society without hierarchy was achievable?

I was wondering how old the idea of storing old/interesting stuff on public display is. Were there museums in the middle ages? If so, what did they even display? Where they publically funded like at a University or was it just some rich people displaying their stuff in their own home?

I came across this thread on Twitter where the writer makes a couple of claims:
The writer cites a Thomas Herbert piece of artwork of King Abbas I of Persia as well.
Were high heels really invented for use on horseback, and did they really enter European men's fashion because of that?

First of all, I want to thank you guys for running this thing like a well oiled machine. It doesn't seem like there are that many mods and looking through posts it seems like a mod is always hiding somewhere ready to pounce on a one sentence answer or one of my harebrained questions. Do you folks have formal schedules of who is on call when? How many decisions are made on the spot and how many are consulted about?

I remember reading somewhere about a region Egyptians used to trade with, and had so many visitors that nobody thought of writing up where it was located as it was "common knowledge", but I can't find that post anymore. I think it was part of a larger post about lost knowledge like Roman concrete and Damascian steel. Maybe someone can help me with it.

This blog post has a photo of a woman with short hair, unusual for the 1890s. What might the context of this have been?

Im studying on becoming a High School history teacher and the book I'm reading just states the 1500's Muslim world was static due to a religious ruling that all essential and true knowledge was contained in the Koran. But it doesn't state when/if they stopped that belief and why.
