In shows like Downton Abbey, Peaky Blinders, old West shows, etc. You often see working men with a sort of tie or something on their upper arm on their shirt. My fiancé and I can’t find anything on the internet about it. Was this sort of style or was there a reason for this? What is/was it called?

In the first half of the 19th century, tariff rates were seen as one of the biggest economic points of contention. More populist political leaders whose base consisted of farmers (Jefferson, Jackson, etc) would advocate for low tariff rates while more elistist/industrial leaders (Hamilton, Henry Clay, the Whig party generally) would advocate for a higher tariff rate. A particularly high tariff rate was what began the Nullification crisis, so clearly it was an issue that had a large affect on the population. My question is this: what effect on the citizenry/the ecnonomy on a macro scale did tariff rates have?
A similar binary exists with monetary policy. Populists like William J Bryan would advocate for a bimettalic currency, and big Buisness Republicans like McKinely would advocate for a strict Gold Standard. The gold standard was seen as directly contrary to the interests of the farmer class; why? What effect would bimettalism have on the ecnonomy?

Did these people realize they were ruled over by a corporation rather than a state? Was there a different perception of the British Monarch/Parliament and the EIC? Did the EIC care about its PR in India?

This popped up for me on twitter, asserting that people walked using the ball of their feet first, instead of the heel. http://mentalfloss.com/article/505105/why-people-walked-differently-medieval-times
It (and the video linked on the article) don't back the claim up with any sources. Does evidence actually support their claims?

This might be the wrong sub for this. Feel free to delete me and point me in the right direction if it is.
My question specifically relates to the names "eleven" and "twelve". Starting at thirteen, you have the suffix -teen. Then twenty. The suffix -ty. Etc. everything before 10 is just a singular number. Everything after 13 follows a pattern of suffixes. So then why are 11 and 12 different? Why don't we have eleventeen or oneteen or something along those lines?

Italic tribes such as the Samnites, Faliscans, Greeks, and Goths inhabited Italy before and during the Roman Empire, but eventually were folded into the empire and became completely Roman. How long did they hold on to their non-Roman ancestries, and when were they forgotten as they are today?

It is easy to access a timeline of when they were built but what is the source of those claims? If they were written down by ancient greek historians, the dates could be off by centuries.

I tried searching for this, seems like a difficult question to search for. Take two examples, (one admittedly from a fiction but still accurate I would think). I seem to remember my grandad told me he got paid £5 a week in ww2 for being a messenger, this comes to about £600 a month in today's value. Then in a tv series I was watching called peaky blinders (based in 1920s), the main character offers his secretary £8 4 shillings a month. This comes to about £250 a month today. I guess the £600 a month could just about scrape by with basically no spare money, but the second example doesn't seem possible. Am I missing something?

Today:
Saturday Reading and Research will focus on exactly that: the history you have been reading this week and the research you've been working on. It's also the prime thread for requesting books on a particular subject. As with all our weekly features, this thread will be lightly moderated.
So, encountered a recent biography of Stalin that revealed all about his addiction to ragtime piano? Delved into a horrendous piece of presentist and sexist psycho-evolutionary mumbo-jumbo and want to tell us about how bad it was? Need help finding the right book to give the historian in your family? Then this is the thread for you!

I had been thinking of the AIR-2 Genie a nuclear missile, being used as an anti-aircraft weapon against potentially nuclear armed Soviet bomber formations. As a person of the 21st century I have serious misgivings about the idea of detonating nuclear weapons near other nuclear weapons, but am curious if this sort feeling was contemporary with these sorts of weapons, or if I am anachronistically projecting current feelings about nuclear weapons onto a different era.

Hello. I am interested in history, particularly World War II and public (also Jewish) relations and lives during these days. Lately I've been fighting the lack of common sense in my family, because they decided to switch to YouTube videos with yellow subtitles instead of books. Let me write down a sentence I'd love to slam dunk: "The Holocaust may have been entirely or partially planned by Jews, since the elites weren't wiped out. Perhaps they planned their extermination to create Israel after the war." Is there proof that "higher ranked" Jews were in fact a subject to similar conditions like normal people? I mean ghettos, concentration camps, executions from the hands of Einsatzgruppen etc. Earlier asked questions and answers to them are helpful, but I'd love specific informations about rabbis, musicians and artists, politicians, scientists etc. Specific people like Janusz Korczak or Franciszka Mann may not be enough, since they are singular examples - are there documented transports of whole groups of scientists or politicians etc?

Anyone know about the process of Arabization in Yemen? How did they shift from Southern Semitic to Central semitic?
