There's lots of evidence in pop culture of lances being used for sport (jousting), but is there evidence of practical usage of lances in combat?

We frequently see Jousting portrayed in movies, TV shows, and books but I don't recall a single instance of seeing a lance used in actual combat/warfare. Was it just not very widespread?

Why were the shields of Norman Invaders shaped this way?

I was watching a TV show that portrayed a Norman Invader and his shield like this https://imgur.com/a/LdAuy. A google image search tells me that's a historically accurate portrayal? What would be the benefits of a shield shaped like that? It looks kind of ineffective.

Wood was a very important resource in many pre-modern societies used for building, cooking, illumination and warmth. How did people in the middle ages and antiquity manage their local lumber resources in a sustainable manner?

For instance did they have planned tree farms where trees were intentionally planted in order to be harvested later? Were there other fuel sources they could switch to? Or would a large urban center have to keep importing lumber from farther and farther away as the trees nearby were cut away?

Why weren't the British colonies in Canada involved in the American Revolution?

So obviously Britain gained colonies in Canada after the French and Indian War. Why weren't colonies such as Nova Scotia involved with the colonies to the south? Was there a more unified culture among the 13 American colonies or were the Canadian colonies reached out to for help? For example were they impacted by the British taxation laws like the American colonies were or was there simply not enough incentive for them to join the fray.

Why is Stalin or Chairman Mao not looked at as evil as Hitler even though they are responsible for more than triple the amount of deaths Hitler is responsible for?

I know some people who wouldn't even know who Chairman Mao or Stalin are, however so many people today consider hitler to be the absolute worst human being in existence simply because of how many people he killed. I'm sure this question has probably been asked before on this sub but I have never seen it.
