I understand that only in 1924 did the Bolsheviks finally hold a firm grip on power in the USSR and by 1930 might not have made foreign affairs their prime objective. Yet I remember hearing about the not as popular First Red Scare and wonder how exactly the USSR went from internal fighting in 1924 to having communist parties in nearly every government in Europe at least, if not the US, China, and Japan; which in turn led to Mussolini creating fascism as a response to push Socialism back.

For soldiers conscripted from random villages across large kingdoms, I imagine it would've been very difficult to find your way home, especially if you were separated from your local lord or noble.
So, across the world, how did people with such a lacking knowledge in regional geography manage to find their way home after foreign campaigns? If they couldn't, then where would a veteran with no way home go?

I would love to see a detailed listing of hitlers physical location throughout the war. I imagine he spent much of his time in Berlin, but a timelapse showing where he was as the war progressed would be really interesting to me,and hopefully others.

Either in a comprehensive sense or in an interesting niche (railroad, gold mining, clothing, etc) sense. American Indian museums as well, though my personal interest is more focused on the 19th century than earlier eras. Small, out of the way museums along these lines are also of interest!

I was just curious what was her real name and patronymic (Helga ????dottir) but couldn't find any info about her father.
Does this info even exist?
Or, if we take that Viking age Norse people had tradition of naming their children after deceased relatives, can we at least assume what her father's name could be and maybe try to match it with some known figure?
"Sviatoslav"/"Saint+glory|fame", for instance, could be just a translation of combination of names Helgi/Oleg/"Saint" and Hrorik/Rurik/"Famed ruler", but could it be that it was taken from another Helgi than that who was a ruler of Rus'?
Maybe Helga's father's name was also Helgi? So could she be Helga Helgisdottir ?
Or maybe she was Helga Helgisdottir as precisely the daughter of that Helgi? (Now that would be too much of a stretch of course and they'd likely mention such detail in the chronicle)

I was just reading a bit about the Vlora War and saw that Italy lost around 4-5 times what the Albanians lost. Why was that like this? Apparently the italian soldiers were well armed and most of the albanians were irregulars?

In the wake of that battle the Romans were completely demoralized having lost 50,000 men in the battle (according to Plutarch) including one of the consuls. The city of Rome was almost defenseless, its population in shock. Hannibal's own generals, including Barca, urged him to march on Rome instantly on the tail of what was left of the defeated Roman soldiery and seize the city. Hannibal made no decision at that time and seemed to prevaricate until the moment was lost. If he had taken Rome he would have been master of Italy. So do we know why he didn't?

My impression, as an American who has Scotch-Irish heritage, is they don't really like each other. They seem to have different religious beliefs, Irish are usually catholic and according to the front page most of the Scots are non religious.

I used to think that Indira Gandhi was Mahatma Gandhi's daughter. Wrong! She is not his daughter (she is a daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru), not even a wife of his son–she just married someone called Feroze Gandhi who just happened to have the same surname as Mahatma Gandhi.
How politically significant was this coincidence? Did average Indian know that Indira and her sons had no blood ties with Mahatma?

So, there is a trope that medieval battles were fought by knights supported by barely trained levies. Obviously, at some point this changed, and wars were fought by professional forces.
When was that? Or, if no solid date can be established, when did this transformation take place?
Or were the stereotypical levies never really a thing?

From what I understand from pop history, the idea of a united "England" (being one country ruling the Anglo-Saxon people) arose with Alfred the Great and was realized by his grandson Athelstan, both West Saxons. Why did they refer to their country as "Englaland" and not something Saxon-derived instead?

Correct if I'm wrong, but I thought I read that one of the main ideas of Barbarossa was that the Soviet military would collapse after a relatively brief period of intense combat. If this is true, was this assumption, that served as the crux of Barbarossa, purely a product of stereotypes or negative ideas of the Soviets and their high command, or did the Nazis try to corroborate this with military intelligence?

I find the Ottoman occupation of the balkans to be fascinating; particularly from the late 15th - early 19th century. There is plenty of material out there regarding the 19th century revolutions within the Balkans, yet I am looking for something more comprehensive that covers the early centuries of Ottoman rule.
Thanks. Happy Sunday.
