Why didn't Native Americans repopulate the land after the epidemics passed?

Europeans first landed in the Americas in 1492 and from then on disease wiped out millions of natives. However, while some areas did go through epidemics, they didn't see any real European presence until much later like the Ohio and Mississippi river valleys. Why didn't these areas successfully rebuild like Europe did after the Black Death?

In battles during the Age of Sail, what where the rules for a captain getting paid?

I've been reading a lot of the Aubrey-Maturin series and it opened my eyes to the internal conflicts in the Royal Navy regarding when a captain got paid and when he did not. What sail he was under, what sail his adversary was under, the battle situation, etc. Can anyone clarify exactly what the rules where and if they changed from nation to nation? Also, did it change over time? Where did this practice come from?

During the Cultural Revolution, did Chinese refugees flee to the Soviet Union?

I’ve read before that Central Asians tried to escape the USSR by going to China in the 1930s, I was wondering if the reverse happened when China experienced its own upheavals.

What are the Assyrians and the Babylonians connection to the Akkadians?

This is a question I have been wondering about for a while and I find different answers on it on while searching.

How were the Assyrians and Babylonians related to the Akkadians? Were those two people simply Akkadians who when the Akkadian empire fell started to identify with whatever God they worshiped? For example, Ashur-worshiping Akkadians became Assyrians?

The Assyrians seem to have an early King list which did not consist of the Akkadian kings (the tent kings), how does this fit in the picture?

Not sure if this is the best place to ask this because it is not strictly history- more like foreign relations. But if you happen to know a good book to help one understand the formation and structure of the European Union I would be very grateful!

Is Judaism, Christinanity and Islam the only religions with a history of being "unfriendly" with other religions?

I'm not really sure what I'm trying to ask except that I've been reading American Gods and it's made me aware of the other myths and religion people used to practise before Christinaty took them over. I think I'm more trying to find out whether not working or not accepting other religion is a unique trait of the Abrahamic religions.

Edit: Clarification

Was Maly Trostenets an extermination camp?

A year ago I completed a history unit at university on the Holocaust, and while looking extermination camps it was deemed that there were six: Chełmno, Bełżec, Sobibór, Treblinka, Auschwitz-Birkenau and Majdanek. However, a recent glance at the Wikipedia article on death camps reveals an extra camp called Maly Trostenets. Is Maly Trostenets rightly included?

Why do rum and ale seem to be the most common alcoholic beverages in history, while vodka is never really mentioned?

Thought of this after watching Game of Thrones last night. While it is fiction, the show and many other movies that are set in older times never really mention vodka. Was it simply not that common, or just more of a Soviet product at the time?

What is the consensus on the CIA's involvement in the Indonesian mass killings of 1965?

I just found out about the shocking Indonesian purge of almost a million communist sympathizers, and that the CIA heavily encouraged it, even providing lists of names of targets. The CIA's official position has been that they had little to no influence on the mass killings that occurred, and I've read the quasi-genocide was applauded by the west.

Marines

Alright Historians! For a story I'm writing I want to know the in's and the out's of a Marine Officer's duties on board a ship while underway. A sailor's perspective is one more informed than that of the Marines and want to get it as accurate as humanly possible.

Thank you in advance.

Good day and God bless.

Why did the US Founding Fathers include separation of Church and State in the constitution, when the English colonies were quite religious (and specifically Protestant) in nature?

Sorry if it's a rudimentary question, but I was watching a documentary on Catholics in America and it suddenly struck me as odd that a government set up by English Protestants would ensure a distinction between religious morals and policy.

Public displays of Sex in ancient Rome (Spartacus time)

Helle everyone,

I was watching the first season of Spartacus (the TV show) where I couldn't help but notice that there were some women exposing their goods in the stands of the Arena. There's even a scene where a couple is having fun in them.

This got me wondering how common it would be in Roman times to have public displays of sex or if it is known that these things happened.

Many thanks in advance.
