What was it like for the European Explorers encountering tornadoes in America.

I was thinking that since tornadoes are most common in the US, would have encountering a tornado for the first time been a terrifying experience. Are there any accounts of them encountering them?

Do we have the information for something like 'bestseller lists' for 17th century England?

Just interested if we have any of the numbers to reconstruct what the people that bought books were buying in say the 1640s or something.

Why did the U.S. government nuke Mississippi?

In 1964 and 1966, the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission (in conjunction with the Department of Defense) detonated two small atomic weapons deep below a location known as Salmon Site in an effort to gauge the effectiveness of remote nuclear testing detectors.

How was this site chosen? What was popular local opinion regarding the tests? Were any other locations in the eastern United States considered for these tests?

List of Roman Held Cities and Towns

I am currently working to create a very detailed map of the Roman Republic in 85 BCE. In order to do this, I need to know what settlements were under Roman control in this year. I was wondering: does any such list exist?

Aka: What settlements were under Roman control in 85 BCE?

Why did the German Army halt at Dunkirk?

In the spirit of the upcoming movie, and from the bit of research I did, the German army had a prime opportunity to annihilate their enemy, but they just.. stopped. Why??

This seems like such a monumentally poor decision.

During WWI (And even WWII I guess) did the axis ever have any decisive major victories towards the end of the war?

From what I've read about the wars, it seems that the axis more specifically the German Empire/Nazi Germany only seemed to be dominant in the beginning of the wars before forces such as the US began to join and ever since they've just been losing constant battles against the Allies. So I was wondering if there were any major battles that the axis did win towards the end of the war that played some sort of role (perhaps delayed the allied offensive or such?)

How did Romans feel about relationships between Romans and non-Romans?

The only examples I can think of are politically charged (Caesar and Cleopatra) or mythological (Aeneas and Dido, the Rape of the Sabine Women etc) and even these do not give me a clear picture. How would Romans have felt about relationships between Romans and foreigners, especially in the Republic to early Empire?

Did firearms existed in Thailand before European contact?

I was wondering about this because I've seen other Southeast Asian countries like Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, the Philippines and Burma seem to have had locally made firearms/cannons like the Lantakas of maritime Southeast Asia and the Dragon cannons of Burma... Thailand had a whealty kingdom called Ayutthaya and they obviously traded with other neighboring countries as well as China so they could have easily been influenced and created cannons or firearms themselves but when I do my research I find it impossible to find anything regarding this subject.

What caused the Flavian hairstyle for Roman women to be so different from previous and future styles?

I was going through images of Roman sculptures today and the very elaborate Flavian hairstyle caught my eye. The nodus which precedes it is far less elaborate and later busts (this one is from 180-200 CE) also do not have such intense styling.

Do any Roman historians know what led to such elaborate hairstyles for such a brief period of time?

What caused prositution to become outlawed in most of the west even though it played a key role in many states?

All states but Nevada have outlawed prositution and brothels however both played major roles in the development of many Western States in the US. The owners contributed greatly to many causes such as education while being seen as valued members of society so what changed and why did prositution and brothels virtually disappear? Why did Nevada keep it legal while surrounding states made it illegal? What factors contributed to it's demise?

Are there any sources for the trial and execution of Socrates that were not written by his students?

Both Plato and Xenophon wrote about the trial of Socrates, but do we have any other sources from outside of his inner-circle? I'm asking because the charges, impiety and corrupting the youth, sound like they could have quite a few interpretations or implications that might not have been communicated by those who most respected him...

Book recommendations on ancient India

I'm looking for a book recommendation or two on the early history of India. I've already checked out the r/AskHistorians book list and found a few excellent possibilities, but I'd like to find a lighter, while still accurate, "pop history" book to act as an introduction to the subject.

Any ideas?

How integrated into larger Polish society were the 3 million Jews living in Poland prior to the Second World War?

On a comment chain in /r/Europe, a comment asserted that the 3 million Polish Jews were not integrated into Polish society prior to the Second World War. The comment cites a source written in 1944, which I'll quote below:

You can ask opposite question: Did ethnic Jews considered themselves as Poles? In an article entitled, “Jews and Poles Lived Together for 800 Years But Were Not Integrated,” published in Forverts (New York, September 17, 1944), Yiddish author and Nobel laureate Isaac Bashevis Singer wrote:

Rarely did a Jew think it was necessary to learn Polish; rarely was a Jew interested in Polish history or Polish politics. … Even in the last few years it was still a rare occurrence that a Jew would speak Polish well. Out of three million Jews living in Poland, two-and-a-half million were not able to write a simple letter in Polish and they spoke [Polish] very poorly. There are hundreds of thousands of Jews in Poland to whom Polish was as unfamiliar as Turkish. The undersigned was connected with Poland for generations, but his father did not know more than two words in Polish. And it never even occurred to him that there was something amiss in that.

Is this true? It seems unlikely to me that the Jewish community could be so not integrated into Polish society, despite having lived there for hundreds of years. I would assume them to be somewhat insular, but not to the degree asserted in the source.

It seems odd to me, especially since its not like sports teams only recruit from their city/state/region or whatever.

Has there ever been a similar(to today, so a 5-20% population shift) large scale demographic influx of Middle Easterners/North Africans into Europe ? If so, what were the consequences?

I was curious as to whether in history there has ever been a massive demographic shift in Western Europe coming from the Near East or Northern Africa. From my very limited info, I don't believe this has ever happened before. At current rates, Middle Easterners/North Africans are approaching 10% in many Western European countries.

The countries in Western Europe I am primarily referring to are:

  • France
  • Germany
  • Netherlands
  • England
  • Belgium
