Sectarianism in Buddhism

How tolerant were different schools of Buddhism to each other throught history? For example if a Chan monk from China in let's say 1300 would journey over Tibet, how he would be treated by his Tibetian brethren? What about vice versa?

Health and Mortality Rates Compared to Modern Day

I got into a discussion with some relatives recently about life in previous centuries before the advent of modern medicine and agricultural practices. My position was that typically we live longer and easier lives than previously in history. The opposing view was that people lives in relatively similar health to us today due to a diet filled with less sugar. I've tried to find sources to support my position, however there only seems to be commentary on the topic and not very much hard statistics.

Would anyone be able to help give me some context as to quality of life and potential for early death as well as some better sources? I was fairly sure about my knowledge of this in the past but with having trouble finding the data I feel a bit unsure.

What do we know about the fowl of the roman empire?

My understanding is turkeys are a much more recent addition to european cuisine than other birds. What poultry would a Roman have typically eaten in the late empire? How would they have prepared it?

Romans philosophy on Government?

I was wondering, during a time of war did Rome elect a monarch instead of having a Republic? Also why did they choose such a system?

FYI Batman reminded me of this, although I don't recall the details. - https://youtu.be/UfcemNhlqyA?t=73

Why did President Kennedy negotiate secretly to resolve the Berlin crisis of 1961, and the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962?

I'm currently researching for my dissertation that is exploring the difference in Kennedy's public and private approaches to foreign policy during the Cuban Missile crisis. I have explored the reasonings behind why he maintained a determined public stance, and I hope to make a comparison of the secret negotiations to remove Jupiter missiles and the secret negotiations to resolve the Berlin crisis of 1961 to demonstrate Kennedy's private approaches to foreign policy.

I'm just wondering if anyone has any interesting comments as to why he pursued secret negotiations, and how significant his private diplomacy was in resolving the Cuban Missile Crisis. I feel like I've reached a mental block, and I'd love some opinions to inspire my research!

Thanks so much!

Is there a historical connection (either by mutual influence or by genetic causation) between old Irish sagas (such as the Ulster cycle) and old Norse sagas (such as the Poetic Edda)?

Being relatively geographically close, I'm wondering if there was perhaps some sort of mutual influence between the two literary traditions. Is there any evidence of something like this? If not, could some of the legends have sprung from a common source?

Historically, why have so many Indians lived in North East India?

Population distribution maps, such as this one show North Eastern India (right below Nepal) as being the most densely populated region.

A video I just watched on human population through time shows that region of India always being the most populated. I'm convince that this area was the center of Indian civilization through time. What factors have contributed to this? And why don't we see similar growth in other parts of India through time?

The film "Citizen Kane," in 1941, employed the distorting of time (jumping between plot points out of order) which had never been seen before in film. Was this same manipulation of plot point order seen in literary works before this film? Or did Orson Welles happen to be the first one to employ it?

The current administration is frequently criticized as "Nixonian". And despite constant scandal, President Trump remains popular among GOP voters and many dismiss controversy as "fake news." Did Nixon have a core group of supporters who stood by him despite the impending crisis?

Did any WWII submarines come across the "Titanic?"

The remains of the "Titanic" weren't found until 1985. However, we do know there were many active submarines in the North Atlantic during WWII.

Did any of them happen to come across the "Titanic" but because of the war it wasn't a priority? If not, how was it possible that not one submarine was able to locate it, if even accidentally?

What was the theory behind trial by combat?

I've read the wiki on it and know that trial by combat did exist in many places in Europe. I don't understand, however, the theory behind it. In what way could a fight determine who was right or wrong in a legal battle? In societies that allowed it, could the best dueler of the town just do whatever he wanted because he would never lose a trial by combat?

Why did the French Second Empire have such a large impact on architecture and the decorative arts?

Second Empire-style buildings and furniture can be found in cities and art galleries the world over, but I've never heard of, say, a "Third Republic" style chair or a Bourbon Restoration house. What are the origins of the Second Empire style, why did it have such a seemingly outsized impact, and what was its relationship with the government of Napoleon III?

How did Marie Antoinette's relatives react to her execution?

I was just watching a documentary about the French Revolution and I was just wondering how Marie Antionette's family reacted to her execution, since they were a very powerful family and it must have shaken quite a bit for one of their own, who was the Queen of France, to be guillotined.
