I recently heard that from 1603 onwards Samurai arrived to Mexico to work as guardsmen and mercenaries. How true is this?

I had never heard this in my life and was not aware of them even knowing about the existence of the country that early. I've googled but can't find anything conclusive.

When and why did Southwestern Native Americans develop masonry? Were they the only indigenous peoples within the United States to have such permanent structures?

The permanent architecture of the Hopi and Pueblo people seems much more in-line with Mesoamerican civilization than with the native peoples of modern-day Texas or California.

Was this tradition unique among indigenous peoples of the United States? How and why did it emerge?

Why were Japanese military forces gathering on Kyushu not considered as targets for atomic weapons?

I read that at least 300,000 troops were gathering on the island of Kyushu in summer 1945 to prepare to fend off a US lead invasion. Seems like a win-win-win situation for the US to target those forces with atomic weapons. You get to: (a. Demonstrate your nuclear capability to communist China and the Soviet Union (b. Retain the "shock" factor produced by use of such weapons while wiping out what remained of Japanese ground forces, and likely forcing an unconditional surrender (3. Avoid inflicting masses of civilian casualties and charges of war crime charges/criticisms etc.

Are these assumptions mislead? Was Japanese air defense still capable in that area. Were military targets too far spread out?

Viking Musical Instruments?

I am wondering if there is knowledge of what Viking musical instruments were common and what I could possibly try to recreate? I am looking to make a historically accurate Viking age string instrument of some kind, if at all possible. Any information is helpful, thanks!

How would I go about trying to find information about a plane crash from WW2?

Sorry if this isn't the right place but I've tried other subreddits and didn't get any answers. I also couldn't find any thing in this sub's archives.

Long story short: My dad was a child in Hungary during WW2 and he said one day a plane got shot down just outside of his village and the pilot was taken prisoner. He is pretty sure it was American.

Are there any resources I could be pointed to that could help me find records of it? Thanks!

What was the state of music in China during the Cultural Revolution? Was traditional Chinese music (like Peking Opera) shoved aside from more Western-sounding works? Were the musical works of Madame Mao seen as revolutionary or conservative?

Assess the responsibility, contribution and impact of Reinhard Heydrich in carrying out the Holocaust.

I need a little bit of help in actually determining the difference between responsibility and contribution.

"The Emperor Nero drinks a potion to make him pregnant and gives birth to a frog." What is the context and background of this story from a 1410 German folio?

I recently came across some pages from a German folio that tell an odd story:

Um... okay??? This is odd for even the most scandalous gossip of emperors. I can't find any older source, or, really, any other source that relates this story beyond the one medieval account here.

What's the context of this? Is it connected to/inspired by other stories? Were people making up new stories about the Roman emperors in the 1410s? What kind of book is this?

After visiting the Met, I realized the beefed up demigods aren't really "proportional" in their genitals. Was this due to differences in beauty, or another issue?

What is the earliest instance of Islamic authorities declaring (most) music to be haram, and what is the earliest instance of actually attempting to enforce prohibition of music?

In the 2014 film Timbuktu Ansar Dine jihadists prohibit music in their occupation of Timbuktu. Modern Salafists have often regarded music (or sometimes instrumental music specifically, or sometimes all instruments except the daf) as haram. (Citing Al-Isra 17:64 and Luqman 31:6, I think.)

I suppose my question is: how far back does this view go? Is it a pretty recent view? It seems that al-Ghazali at least regarded the anti-music view as serious enough to write a refutation of it. Was it regarded as an ill-informed fringe view (although still one common enough to be worth refuting) at the time? Or were there significant authorities pushing the music-is-haram line? Did the relatively hardline Islamic authorities of the era, such as the Almoravids and Almohads, issue rulings of music as haram? Did any actually attempt to enforce legal prohibition of music?

As I understand it Stalin was pretty busy capturing Berlin before western allies but at the same time finnish front had almost collapsed although the resistance was bitter(for example battle of Tali-Ihantala). Why did they just settle for some pieces of land and Porkkala harbor that they rented?

United States - North Korea 1980s weapons deal?

I was messing around with an arms trade database (http://armstrade.sipri.org/armstrade/page/values.php) and it says in 1983 and 1984 the United States supplied weapons to North Korea. This made no sense to me and I couldn't figure out how this happened.

Why is Islam more common in the countries near the Adriatic Sea such as Albania, Kosovo, Bosnia-Herzegovina, etc and less common in the countries closer to Turkey like Bulgaria, Greece and Serbia?

I was looking at the Islamic population of Europe and found that the Muslim population for nations near Turkey is rather low compared to those on or near the Adriatic Sea. Seems rather odd to 'skip' over like that.

To what extent did the commonly known mesoamerican empires interact? Were they aware of each other?

Last night I started reading Douglas Preston's 'The Lost City of the Monkey God' and was stricken by his descriptions of how dangerous and difficult to traverse the dense jungles of Central America are. This made me wonder if the jungles made it impossible to strike out far beyond one's own city or village, and therefore isolated empires from each other. I also have a really poor idea iof when each major empire (the Aztecs, Maya, Incas, Zapotec) existed and if they overlapped.

Is there evidence of these developed civilizations interacting? If so, what was generally the nature of their interactions?
