How did the early Pacific Islanders manage to travel such great distances and find islands?

I get how the navigation would work but do we have an understanding of their supply situation? How did they travel with enough fresh water due long voyages? How many people/boats would go out at a time?

Any reading recommendations on the topic would be greatly appreciated.

I've heard a lot of judges complain that the Supreme Court and chords in general have become overly politicized. Was there a specific incident in US history where the confirmation process of a Supreme Court justice or a district court justice became political? Or has it always been like this?

What were some empires like the Dutch Empire?

Specifically in the early 20th century. Specifically, I'm interested in European empires that relied on trade. I've thought of Britain, but I'd like to find a culture which is a little bit less known and powerful (at the time). If you're wondering why, I'm writing a novel, and a novel in the genre is already using the Dutch Empire. Thanks for answering

Have American civilians ever been forced to go to war?

I'm European so I don't know that much about American politics or history but this is a question that has bothered me for quite some time now. I know about the conscription that ended during the 1960s (?) or something like that so I'm wondering whether American men who were obligated to serve in the military temporarily were also forced to go to war when there was one.

[Ancient Kingdoms (Israel esque)] Did ancient religions accuse other religions of faking/hallucinating visions/oracles?

In the modern day, people dismiss many aspects of religion by accusing them of being hallucinogenic visions or just normal dreams.

My question is whether or not similar things happened among ancient religions, towards one another, or did the lay person of the time accuse religions of just being dreams or visions rather than fact? My question is focused on Ancient Israel, but if you have other answers from other ancient religions, I'm curious to hear these aswell.

Did Hitler really create a strong German economy?

I always hear conflicting reports, some will see it was an economy based on debt and would quickly fall apart if there was no war. Then I hear that the economy was strong, revived the German economy, and was amazing. Which one was it? I always try to talk to people about this but I can never get a strong enough source, thanks!

What was the popular style of clothing worn by non-peasant/middle-class/gentry in the 16-17th centuries?

Any answers from different periods and places, specifically of European influence, are welcome, such as Napoleonic Europe, 7 years war, pre-revolutionary war America, etc.

If this question has been answered a long time ago, I would appreciate if one can link any, if there are, information about the topic.

What were President Truman's alternative options for using atomic weapons to end the Pacific War?

I am not referring to Operation Downfall, or other strategies that did not rely on the success of the Trinity test, rather, I'd like to know more about the options presented to Truman that may have 'warned' Japan about the new weapon, either by direct communication or by detonating it over uninhabited area. I know that at the time the number of deployable weapons was a limiting factor, but I was curious to know what else went into the decision to have the first attack on Japan be over a civilian population center.

What caused the allies to lose the battle of Hurtgen Forest and how did that effect the battle of the bulge?

I just got done watching the movie "When Trumpets Fade" and it portrayed the battle, which is a battle I have never heard of, as one where none of the soldiers really knew why they were there. In googling I have found a concensus that the allies lost, but I want to know what happened exactly and how it affected the upcoming battle of the bulge.

Religion in Assyria and "Semitco-Syrian" civilizations

EDIT: https://www.reddit.com/r/Assyria/comments/5snz41/had_a_question_on_ancient_religion_in_assyria/

I'm reading an essay from half a century ago which claims,

Semitico-Syrian and Assyrian civilizations are characterized by the predominance of female deities, of lunar or telluric goddesses of Life

Were ancient Assyrian and Semitic civilizations indeed feminine-heavy with their deities? Or is this a sort of idiosyncratic and/or antiquated idea (the essay doesn't even really cite a source)?

Can we tie the inclusion of laywomen in church services to the development of canon law designed to 'protect' them?

This question just occurred to me in the wake of a previous one about doctrinal deviance and the Black Death.

I'm not sure as to the geographical specificity of laywomen in services, so it's a necessarily broad question - please feel free to isolate it to one country, but preferably in the middle/late medieval (Uh, I think that's 1100 - 1500 , maybe D:?)

So, two questions now :)

Cheers!

We see them all the time in depictions of ancient warfare (Hannibal, the Selucids, etc.) but never see them in depictions of medieval combat. Why is this?

Do we know precisely where the studios of famous artists were located?

While we know that, for example, Michelangelo worked in Florence in 1502, I've never heard about the actual location of his studio... or for that matter any other artist's studio except the more recent ones.
Do we know the actual locations of where various artists worked and lived? Have those locations been excavated? Do we have pictures?? I'd love to know more!

What did immigrants from Europe like Ireland, Germany, etc think of the practice of slavery in the United States when they first arrived? Were they shocked? Disgusted? Was it not that big of a deal to them since various countries in Europe were practicing slavery is their own colonies?

Why did men held in Nazi concentration camps have no body hair?

One of the highest upvoted links on /r/pics are photos from Nazi concentration camps.

https://www.reddit.com/r/pics/comments/5s2ew3/there_used_to_be_a_website_pics_or_it_didnt/

Going through these photos is very difficult. I was struck by something in particular. The photos of emaciated men. None of them seem to have chest hair, armpit hair, or pubic hair. Is this because of their starvation? Or was it removed?
