Was there a Roman pantheon before they adopted the Greek gods/goddesses?

Is there a resource to learn about the Roman gods before they essentially stole the ancient Greek pantheon? I've only ever seen the description that they just decided to take over the Greek pantheon because their own wasn't nearly as comprehensive.

In the 1970s, there was a big trend in baseball for the creation of enclosed stadiums with astro-turf, so much so that the newly formed Houston team named themselves the Astro's. Why did the fad die down? What prompted the shift back towards more traditional ballparks?

How does the Mormon faith compare to other movements formed during the Second Great Awakening?

I don't know a whole lot about the Second Great Awakening or this period of American history in general, but I grew up with a lot of Mormons and have a bit of a background on their faith. How does the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (aka the Mormon Church) relate to other churches and religious movements formed at the same time as it (rather than the other churches that split off after Brigham Young succeeded Joseph Smith)? Are there similarities in doctrine or theology that persist today? Do churches formed in the same time and place still exist, or is the Mormon church somehow special in this regard?

Can answered questions have a TL;DR within the reply

I realize, I'm asking to be flamed for asking this question in a historian related sub-reddit.

But, can responses to questions try to include a TL;DR?

That is, I'm very interested in history, but often times you see multi-page length responses (which are awesome btw, and the detail is necessary and wanted). However, sometimes would be nice to have a highlight summary to help you decide if you want to read more for more detail.

I realize that this also opens up a partial-history problem, that is, if lots of people only read the TL;DR it could lead to a slanted view of a subject. But I don't think that would truly be a problem, as the real source of the data is below.

The word lord comes from "loaf warden" and formed well after the rise of Christianity, so how did they retroactively apply that to the Bible? What word would a Roman in, say, the 4th century have used in its place?

And what word is used in the Greek manuscripts or by the apostles of Jesus? Isn't its usage rather anachronistic?

Hi , I just have one question regarding the Ottoman Empire.

For a while now. I've been trying to search if the Ottoman Empire was the stabilizing factor of the middle east, was there order?. I've only came across reading that there were revolts but all empires have revolts. I just wanted to know know if the Ottoman empire.

  1. Provided peace in the middle east, the same way the Persian empire, under Cyrus the Great did it.

  2. Was the Ottoman Empire aware of the boundaries of certain groups? (Armenians - Kurdish - Egyptian - Syrians - Jewish, etc.).

Thanks for your time. Just been really curious on the Ottoman Empire and its impact. If there is a link, please show it, I dont mind. Sorry if this has been posted already.

Rhineland and Napoleon

Other than France and perhaps Poland, another area that was quite fond of Napoleon was the Rhineland (Germans made up around 30% of Le Grande Armee, I think?). Beethoven's symphony no.3 was originally dedicated to Napoleon. Could someone please contextualize the relationship between Rhinelanders and Napoleon?

Where does the victorian pointing hand clipart come from?

I've seen this image (or variants on it) pop up in quite a lot of places, and it appears to be part of quite a few clip art collections, but it seems like an oddly specific thing to be clip art. Is there any history behind the image?

Is there a latest consensus on cannibalism at the Jamestown colony? Did it really happen? Was it widespread?

I know there is some archaeological evidence of the cannibalization of a 14 year, but is there written evidence? George Percy and some other sources have written about a man cannibalizing his wife, but I've read that these sources had reason for exaggeration. Namely, Percy's reputation and other political motives.

You know the drill: this is the thread for all your history-related outpourings that are not necessarily questions. Minor questions that you feel don't need or merit their own threads are welcome too. Discovered a great new book, documentary, article or blog? Has your Ph.D. application been successful? Have you made an archaeological discovery in your back yard? Did you find an anecdote about the Doge of Venice telling a joke to Michel Foucault? Tell us all about it.

As usual, moderation in this thread will be relatively non-existent -- jokes, anecdotes and light-hearted banter are welcome.

Can someone please explain James Madison's seemingly hypocritical stance regarding government - How can the "Father of the Constitution" go on to help write the VA/KY Resolutions which sought to nullify acts of the federal government created by the very Constitution he helped create?

Is it as simple as Madison understanding the need of a Constitution, but then being scared of it's unintended consequences (growing government power, etc.)? Did Madison later regret his Federalist stance? Thanks for any comments.

Why is the mother of Jesus deified but his father is almost not mentioned?

Is it to do with the maternal image of care and love or something of the sort? Or did Mary actually do something to deserve her deification?
