What was the justification of Jim Crow laws in the 20th century?

Did they think black people had genetically less mental and cognitive abilities than the white people until the into 1960s? Did they ever find scientific(or pseudoscientific to be exact) proof about it? It's understandable in 1800s and maybe very early 1900s, but I'm surprised that people believed it well into the 20th century, in the age of nuclear power and space travel.

In Guy Ritchie Holmes movie there's a bit where Holmes beats up a guy and then estimates how long it will take the man to recover physically and "psychologically". Would anyone in the 1890s have acknowledged there was any such thing as "psychological recovery time" after a traumatic experience?

Cuban Embargo

Hey All,

I'm writing a paper for my World History since 1945 course (mid-level undergraduate).

We have a small paper in which we make suggestions on current/future policy using historical examples.

One of the prompts asks us to write a hypothetical suggestion if Trump re-severs diplomatic ties with Cuba.

I'm having some trouble thinking of solid historical examples to support a suggestion.

I was thinking of maybe focusing on the disadvantage of severing diplomatic communication. Does anyone have any reading suggestions?

Thanks, J

What Were the British [Culture] Reactions to The Atomic Bomb/Nuclear Age?

Im asking what Britains response was to the use of the atomic bomb in 1945. I understand that British Society largely viewed it with uncertainity - almost as a "atomic crossroads" with the dawn of the atomic age on the horizon.

Can anyone provide me with any specific national/localised histories or primary source reports on British Societies reaction to the bomb?

Lincoln's pose in his memorial seems at odds with legacy as a humble, folksy President. Did the artist ever receive criticism for this? What was his response, if so?

To clarify, the statue is very imposing. Lincoln is seated on a throne like a comic book villain. Maybe this is my own subjective take.

The farthest I have come with is thinking it's some sort of a brass Xylophone.

What prompted the first emperor of Qin to have hundreds of scholars buried alive and their works burned? If history was the primary concern, what interpretations and narratives was he trying to suppress? Was live burial a "normal" punishment or an exceptional one, to make an example?

PG Wodehouse and the use of cheques in the early 20th C

I happen to hugely enjoy the work of PG Wodehouse. Despite the usual comedic exaggerations of his descriptions of the early 20th century, he often reveals some interesting assumptions.

In a number of his books, the protagonist (through well meaning blackmail or some other benevolent trickery) demands that the antagonist cough up some cash (to enable a couple to get married or for some other happy scheme).

The antagonist protests that he doesn't have his cheque book with him viz,

"Five thousand!" cried Mr. Waring. "It's monstrous."

"It isn't," said Psmith. "It's more or less of a minimum. I have made inquiries. So out with the good old cheque-book, and let's all be jolly."

"I have no cheque-book with me."

"I have," said Psmith, producing one from a drawer. "Cross out the name of my bank, substitute yours, and fate cannot touch us." Mr. Waring hesitated for a moment, then capitulated. Psmith watched, as he wrote, with an indulgent and fatherly eye.

"Finished?" he said. "Comrade Maloney."

"Youse hollering fer me?" asked that youth, appearing at the door.

"Bet your life I am, Comrade Maloney. Have you ever seen an untamed mustang of the prairie?"

"Nope. But I've read about dem."

"Well, run like one down to Wall Street with this cheque, and pay it in to my account at the International Bank."

Could people really just manually amend someone else's cheque with the details of a totally different bank and account holder and expect the altered cheque to be honoured without question, or is this just exaggeration for comedic effect?

How were the relations between the German Empire and France between 1871 and 1914?

Some people stated that there was a lot of enmity between the two countries. However, I read somewhere that the enmity was largely blown up and they both really didn't hate each other that much. So how were relations between France and Germany between the formation of Germany and WW1?

The middle east seems to have been used as battlegrounds and proxy wars for other nations (both foreign and regional) for awhile now. Even in the present day Russian troops are in Syria. What led to so many interventions from post WW2 to the current day?

When we look at writings from 400-500 years ago and monsters are mentioned, we think "oh, they didn't know any better, we know the truth." Did people in 1600 think that of people in 1200, or did they take tales as truthful?

The Luck of Simón Patiño

Forgive me if this question is rather obscure, but it could potentially be of great personal importance.

Simón Iturri Patiño was a Bolivian mining tycoon who struck it rich in the early 20th century. Basically owning the Bolivian mining industry, he amassed an estimated fortune of over 80 billion dollars.

I've been reading his biography and how exactly he made his fortune, and it is quite curious. In 1894, he accepted a plot of land in compromise for a $250 debt owed by a prospector (source: Wikipedia), and this land just so happened to be fabulously rich in minerals. Neither Patiño nor the prospector knew of the land's worth at the time of transaction, as it took Patiño a number of years before he struck wealth.

I've been searching far and wide for the name of this prospector that he gained the land from, but I don't know where to search. It seems like such an obscure piece of information that would be lost to history, but one would think that the previous owner of such a rich piece of land might have their name preserved?

I'm not sure if this is the right subreddit for this question, or if it even is a question that anyone can answer. Regardless, any suggestions of where to look further are welcome!

What legal/legislative relationships existed between Canada's First Nations communities and the Federal at the beginning of the 20th century?

Hiya, folks! As my title suggests, I'm interested in learning about the legal organisation, rights and representation of Canada's First Nation communities at the beginning of the 20th century? To my extremely limited understanding, First Nations people had been, and would continue to be, subject to widespread and systematic disenfranchisement and exploitation by the Canadian government both prior to and long after the turn of the century. This said, what form/s did their legal status take around 1900? Was there any form of national unity or identity like that which we see encompassed in today's "First Nations" concept? How did indigenous leaders and populations succeed in leveraging what legal status they did hold?

Thanks!

Edit: Accidentally a word in the title, "Federal Government."
