We have science fiction with aliens or futuristic humans coming in with beam weapons, energy shields, teleporters, ultra-strong alloys, healing nanoprobes, etc. We had a century earlier advanced submarines that could 20,000 league under the sea.

Was there similar kind of fiction before industrialization?

I was thinking about going to college to get a history degree. I was wondering if it is worth pursuing.

So i was researching about the crusades and medieval times when some questions occurred to me. What made up the army around high middle ages? Would the majority be peasants, or sergeants, archers, etc... So say would sergeants be the most common, and then archers or peasants, and knights being less common, etc...
Also, what was the biggest difference between a men-at-arms and a knight besides knights generally being of a noble family and being trained younger. I read somewhere the men-at-arms could fight nearly as well as knights? I hope i was clear about these questions, i'm not good with clarifying what i'm trying to ask.

i am kind of curious what sort of information is out there regarding the mental affect that participating in such mass murders had on the participants. Certainly, engaging in mass murder of tens of thousands of innocent people had to have had enormous psychological effects on the participants.

I've read quotes by Otto Ohlendorf regarding the fact that some men spontaneously engaged in brutal acts and approached their tasks with apparent zeal and enthusiasm. others were driven to drink and were forced to be replaced as a result of such activities.

What do we know about the effects of such killings on the participants and how the Nazi leadership confronted it?

I've been doing some light (heh) reading on the limits of presidential power during war, and Korematsu of course came up. I read that the internment order was based on claims like signal lights in California or something along those lines. I read that the report was disavowed, but was there even credible reason at the time internment was adopted to believe that the intelligence was based on sound information? Or was the US duped?

I was hoping for a little guidance. I'm writing a paper comparing how survivors of different mass traumas (i.e., genocide, terrorist attacks, natural disasters, etc.) cope in the aftermath of those traumatic events. I'm totally overwhelmed by the number of books published in the fields of memory studies and trauma theory. Can anyone please recommend a book or article that gives a good sense of the current state of each field?

Hello, I have to write a paper for my western civilization class. The question is: "did the Roman empire collapse or evolve." I am pretty split on this. Literally split, when the empire was split into east and west, the west definitely fell because constant attacking a pillaging from the barbarians while (how I see) the east survived and evolved into what we know as the byzantine empire. What do you think? Are you a continuist or catastrophist?

Let me be frank, I am researching this for a school paper on the subject matter and so it falls under the category of a homework question. I've been looking into the topic for some time now but I cannot seem to find any books on the subject matter. What I find are articles and websites and even then they are limited. It ends up being one of those "historians have debated this for a while" type answers that doesn't really get to a final conclusion.I am not here to get someone to do my research for me. All I am asking is for sources where I may find an answer to this question. So, if anyone is aware of some good books on this topic I'd love to know them. Thank you!

Huge question, I know. I'm curious about how both Germany and the USSR reacted to the creation of this new front. Did the Nazis have to move hundreds of thousands of troops from Poland/Belarus back to France and Germany? How was this perceived by Soviet commanders and soldiers? What was the moral effect of the American arrival?

Since England has the world's largest navy at the time, couldn't they have interfered in the Western Hemisphere without fears of US involvement because the US had no way of enforcing the Monroe Doctrine?

In hollywood movies or most notably Game of Thrones, most soldiers carry swords. As far as I know, this is incorrect and Pikes were the most used weapon since it was so easy to manufactore and to train. Please correct me if I am wrong.

But why do movies and series always use swords as the main weapon if it was in reality the Pike?

And as far as I know, heavy cavalry, as in heavily armored knights, where the main striking force in the Medieval Age, flanking the enemy and striking a fatal blow to win the battle. But if the pike was so prominant, why did european armies still relied so heavily on their knights to win the fight, or rather: Why was the cavalry able to do this, if atleast 1/2 of the enemy army was equipped with pikes that basically rendered cavalry useless?
