I'm curious given my lack of understanding of Middle Eastern history. Since this website does not offer citations how accurate is this article?

Given all the different coins minted during the reigns of different emperors and their large area of circulation, I can't help but wonder if there were individuals who sought out coins of different emperors the way we do today. Were the Romans known to collect things like this?

My impression of the Spartans has always been something like this: They get a lot of really great press from the Battle of Thermopylae, which is primarily based on a misunderstanding of how that battle actually went down (they were a small contingent of a much larger Greek army that collectively/impressively held off a huge Persian force, and they then stayed behind and got massacred after everybody else wisely got out of dodge). They were really, really severe and eschewed just about any form of decadence or luxury. They trained to fight a bunch and did a lot of calisthenics all the time. They did not, however, actually bother to make a viable state or military system; they focused on self-denial and being tough at the expense of everything else, and thereby set themselves up to be steamrolled by Rome, which was far less severe (and more decadent) but just a much stronger state that fielded a much better army.

In short: The Spartans were kind of a bunch of weirdos that spent a lot of time and effort doing hard-but-ultimately-inconsequential things well while missing the big things that actually make for an effective power. Accurate at all?

Why did they migrate to Russia? Where did they come from? What sort of role did they have in the Russian Empire and Soviet union?

Is there any evidence ethnically of the time they spent in Africa. I was wondering if the lighter colours of North africans had more than the climate to blame.

Hitler's religious views have come into question many times, and I was wondering what they were according to historians. One of the chants said by the Hitler Youth state that "We will be pagans once again," but in Mein Kampf, he states that his hostility towards Jews is "acting in accordance with the will of the Almighty Creator." Others who worked with him, however, say that he was skeptical of religion, and his proclamation of Nazism as a secular ideology could hint at this skepticism.

I'm just trying to get a picture in my head of what the peoples in that area looked like.

My family has a number of diaries from one of our relations which have spent the last 75 years in an attic, I am now looking to preserve them.

The diaries cover from the first boer war through to the 1920's, each volume is bound and each is written in Pitman's short hand.

My first priority is to digitise the collection with the computer able to recognise the characters on the page. As each volume is bound I can't send multiple pages through a scanner at once, my current thinking is to you use a 'scanning' app on my phone (basically taking a photo of each page) so I can move through each volume reasonably quickly.

Secondly I need to translate the diaries. My grandmother has translated a few pages and found some gems such as the first motor vehicle to come to the village and the death of Queen Victoria but there is plenty more to do. My hope is technology will one day come to the rescue and as long as I have digitised the collection some form of translate service will become available, if not at least the collection is safe and if a family member on day choses to learn Pitman the collection is accessible.

Does anyone have any experience with this? The size of the collection makes this a daunting task but I feel it would be a great shame to lose such an interesting insight into history. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

So on the Wikipedia page for the "Gospel of Barnabas" it is stated that:

"Muslim teaching at this time strongly opposed the printing of Islamic or Arabic texts, non-Muslim printing was not, in principle, forbidden."

Can anyone expand on why Muslims of the time had taken that stance? Unfortunately the page doesn't provide a reference link for the above statement.

She's pretty demented so it's hard to get more information. I thought maybe this was part of the Holocaust or something but she denied being Jewish.

That is basically the topic of my term paper and pretty much anything regarding the development of Chicago into the "city of neighborhoods", effects, causes, attempts to address those issues/failure to do so would be helpful. It has been hard to find material so far because there are very few books on American history and internal issues in German libraries and I would also like to avoid German sources to simplify the process of quoting these sources since the term paper will be written in English.

I have read in some places that there was a political/populist trend within the flagellant movement in Black-Death-ravaged Europe. How true are these claims? Further, what reading can I do specifically in regard to the flagellants and their concerns?
