I know linen was a fairly common material as well as silk, but was leather used by common people, craftsman, or was it used at all?

In 1921, Tulsa Oklahoma, planes were used to drop bombs on the city of Tulsa.

Now I am no genius, but I am quite sure planes cannot be bought in retail stores, and especially ones with historical significance. So I assume the US govt knew. If so, despite this being a very different time, why was this allowed?

I was thinking about how some of my recent ancestors' religious affiliation seemed to be based on geography and class (in an aspirational sense) more than on family tradition or ethnic background, and then I started wondering how that might have worked in earlier phases of American religious history. For instance, my paternal grandparents grew up in small towns and I think were brought up Methodist, but by the time they got married in Cleveland, they belonged to an Episcopalian parish because, according to my dad, they hoped to benefit from the superior prestige of Episcopalianism. But that distinction has to postdate the Second Great Awakening, right? So how did people choose their church before that?

I've also been thinking a lot about the wealth of families like the Schuylers and the Revolutionary loyalties of Philip Schuyler, father of my current historical crushes Elizabeth Hamilton and Angelica Church. In a region full of rich Dutch people (but not so many other kinds of Calvinists, as far as I know), would Reformed Protestantism have held any attraction for people who weren't Dutch, or would it have been too Dutch or too old-school even for people of Dutch descent?

I have always been taught, that what we call communist countries, should be called socialist. Because at least the initial idea of communism was, no government at all. While for socialism, the stepping stone toward true communism, has a large controlling government that (supposedly) divides all means equally over the people. Maybe this is just wrong, thank you!

The paintings always seem so beautiful, some even abstract. There seems to be a lot of artistic talent yet I've not seen many poor illustrations. Maybe certain caves and locations were important and reserved for the most talented artists to decorate and tell their story? I would have thought there'd be the odd practice wall found here and there.

I'm doing some research on ancient Rome, and what baffles me is that there are all these papers on Roman coinage, customs, and clothing, but nothing on where they'd keep their change, small items, etc.

China entered the war on the side of the allies, and sent over a hundred thousand people to do support work. Why didn't they try to take the extra step of regaining control of some of their territory? Why leave it for the Japanese to take?

Undoubtedly it would have been costly, but surely the act of fighting a western power to retake control of a territory would have conferred tremendous legitimacy onto the government of Yuan Shikai.

It is pretty straightforward. As I recall from the show, this town was the location of the only viable gas stop between Atlantic City, NJ and New York, NY, and a criminal gang rolled in, outnumbering and out gunning the town's 3 or 4 man police force, and posted armed guards at the roads into town, effectively controlling illegal liquor shipments between the afore-mentioned cities.

It was a cool few episodes, but I can't imagine something like this would have lasted any longer than it took the state police/national guard to gear up and force the criminals to step off, but maybe I'm wrong?

What were the major professions of Jewish people at this time?

I never understood this, I get that Vichy France was a puppet but why even give them that degree of autonomy? Given the animosity towards France after WWI I would've assumed the germans would've been more hostile to the French. Why did Hitler only establish a puppet regime here but in none of the other countries he conquered?

How was governance handled? How did Haitians feel about it, generally? Did it have any long lasting achievements? How effective was the occupation in maintaining stability, and the general functions of a working government? Additionally, what happened in the years immediately following the US pull-out?

Not a historian but it's my contention that the idea of "one wage earner supporting a family" is a result of a post WW2 "bubble" of prosperity that Americans enjoyed and popularized as the ideal (aka nuclear family). And that this bubble basically burst in the 1970's leading to a return of both of parents "working".

So was the "single wage earner" the norm in pre-WW2 times?

Hope this is the right sub. Apologies in advance if I'm wrong, but I noticed this contraption in the upper left hand corner of an old family photo and can't tell what it is. I always assumed it was a windmill, but just noticed that it doesn't appear to have any blades...

How were they treated? What nation looked after them? Where were they kept?

I had to write a paper last week regarding the Minutemen, specifically their efforts in the war and how they sealed the American Victory, however I found very little to support this. I was wondering if this is true at all, or even if the contrary is true.
