I suppose Korea congealed in a time before nationalism, so this question is a bit nebulous. But what about totally different languages, or people who did not see themselves as a part of the main Korean culture? What happened to any groups that might object to the idea of One Korea?

I'm currently working on a paper concerning the Gaelic League in Ireland. I must admit working from the states is incredibly tough, and Florida is even more limiting when it comes to primary sources. the NLI digitization effort has been somewhat helpful, but I still find myself resorting to translations and quotes within existing texts. Not ideal, as you may know.

At any rate, I've come up short when trying to gain access to the MacNeill papers without flying to Ireland (not an option any time soon). Do any of you know of a digital archive with the MacNeill papers, or would anyone who has personal copies of them be willing to work with me on a select few documents?

Were there any legal agreements or metrics needed to qualify as a colony of say Britain? Any treaties that defined what made a particular settlement a colony?

So I am working on a period movie and one of the characters says this. Only reference I found was a small Sikh website. Can someone here kindly let me know if its true or not?

In my studies of China, Korea, and Japan, I feel as though there are far better sources, analyses, and general scholarship on China and Japan compared to that of Korea. Was/is there little interest by Western historians when it comes to Korea? Is there something about Korea that makes it uniquely difficult to study?

I have heard that there was an attitude in the past that Korean history is merely an off-shoot of Chinese history. Can anyone corroborate this? This is clearly not true, though I am interested in the justification for this if it is so.

Edit: I would also love suggestions on good books in English on Korean history.

Hello, I have seen it mentioned a couple of times in the internet that the European Union, which we know today, actually took inspiration from Napoleon. As far as I know, Napoleon did not try to unite Europe and his only intention was to get more power and land for France. Why do people keep saying he was kind of the "instigator" of the idea of unified Europe?
