During the Punic wars, it's said that Hannibal had an army of elephants and marched them Across The Strait of Gibraltar. How was he able to keep these elephants fed? Were they on a boat? I'm very interested in war elephants

I'm reading up on the history of pottery and ceramics. It's fascinating stuff but I'm having a hard time finding any info on pre-contact Australian pottery. Did they simply not have any?

Seeing how different old English is from what is spoken today, if I was in America in 1776, would I be able to talk to them? What about London in 1500s, or even during the Crusades?

Same as title, If I was somehow sent to London durning the 1800's assuming I have all typical modern vaccinations how likely would I die from a plague? Which ones would I be safe from? Which ones would I be vulnerable to? Are there any other non modern eras that I would fare better or worse in?

Were there big events like the Great Schism and Reformation, or was it a more gradual development?

Is this true? I hear this claim bandied about a lot, especially on these forums.

As far as I can tell, the idea originated with a 19th-century work by Jakob Fallmerayer, in which he lays out the evidence presumably on demographic and physiological grounds. Google seems to suggest that a) Fallmerayer is not taken seriously by modern scholars, and b) genetic research indicates evidence of some Slavic descent, but nothing like the complete annihilation of "the race of Hellenes" that Fallmerayer suggests.

Hitler tends to get all the press with loads of movies, books, papers, and such discussing his rise to power and the conversion of Germany from the Weimar Republic. So much so that I realize I have nothing more than a few dry facts from Wikipedia to outline his renunciation of Socialism and rise of power.

What were the conditions in Italy that led to such a such popularity of Fascism?

We watched a movie (which I guess was based on a book) when I was in 5th grade. It was about how in middle-England (Renaissance?) there would be a court whipping boy who would take the prince's punishments for him. The whole thing seemed ridiculous to me at the time, but was it an actual thing that happened?

From what I understand, the cultural attitude towards Jews in Germany was largely negative even before Hitler was in power. What was the reasoning behind this? What details are there about the average German's feelings about Jews in the time preceding the Holocaust?

Did they use documentation? Was there a sort of registry? Was it based on bloodline?

How far back does homosexuality go? How common/uncommon was it?

Did she make any major political decisions noteworthy? How did she do in foreign relations with other countries? Or is the only reason she's famous is for her personal life?

I mean, there's plenty of bad 'pop history', but I'd imagine that must be at least something good just by the sheer volume of the stuff floating around.

This is without the moral implications. From what I can take of it it seems like the decision would be met with massive political backlash if it hadn't been utilized by the winner of the war. Was fear of the backlash taken into account when making the final decision to drop the bomb? Were the bombs even worth it in terms of the resources used on them?
