After recently hearing the unfortunate news that Nancy Reagan had passed away, it made me think back about how crazy it was that Ronald Reagan was a well known actor before coming president. This was well before my time and I couldn't find much in regarding my question, but how famous was Ronald Reagan as an actor, and which actor from today's standards would you compare him to in terms of popularity? (not in terms of acting style, personality, etc)

I never lived close to the 50's but it seems to me they had that "sweep it under the rug" vibe, with like crippling racism and sexism and Hitler and Stalin.

I'm referring to the lend-lease weapons that the US sent to replace the material left behind in Europe. I'm sure the military accepted it out of necessity, but how did they feel about it?

I've heard this so often growing up, and I'm fairly certain that I was even taught it in school. But was there ever really any point in midieval history where the streets were just filled with feces and urine because of peasants emptying their buckets out the window? It just seems unfathomable to me that any society no matter how uncivilized would do something like that in the open where they walk. They still have a sense of smell. I looked into it on my own and I had a surprising amount of difficulty finding any reference to this phenomenon, both anything proving it, and anything disputing it. Can someone who knows more about that time help me out?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I remember reading in one discussion of Napoleonic/French Revolutionary tactics [there really should be a name combining the two, but oh well] that few armies still drilled their troops in fire-by-rank/volley fire. Why is this? Was it just that it was difficult to train, and the larger armies of the period couldn't drill all their troops in it?

We all know that Stalins policies have caused the death of a lot of people. He collectevised the farming lands again (undoing the NEP), boosted fast industrialisation (even though the industry lacked the production of consumption goods) and purified the top leadership and deported other dissidents to establish firm control over the USSR.

Now, in a recent discussion with a Georgian here on Reddit, the argument was made that these reforms were necessary for the military survival of the USSR. This seems unlikely to me, since the NEP increased agricultural production (lower food prices, more stable society, better economy), and the deportations must have caused social tensions.

So my question is to you is, how did the economic (and social) reforms of Stalin influence the military capabilites of the Soviet Union?

The big one I'm wondering about is they're giving her credit for getting President Reagan to meet with Mikhail Gorbachev. Is this true? What was Nancy Reagan's role in reducing Cold War tensions?
