The scene that comes to mind the most is the opening combat scene in Alexander where he rides out on Bucephulas and gives the "For Glory, For Greece" speech. The troops are in formation and the Persians are across the field.

Was this ever a practice, or do movies portray this for dramatic effect? It seems like only a small part of the army could even be within earshot of the speaker and it might pose a safety risk as well.

Was it like a turtle kingdom such as Korea and cut off like Japan?

How much interaction was there between India and the middle east compared to Europe? What about India and the Arabian peninsula? India and persia?

I've really wanted to find out my family tree the past couple years, as nobody in my family really knows it. In fact, just a couple months ago, I found a document from 1947 disproving the facts we currently had saying my grandmother had changed her name during the war, as the document is a travel card from Romania to Italy with her real name. I have tried sites like ancestry.com, but have never found anything before WWII. So, rather than ask an actual historical question, I'm going to ask one about the finding of the information. How would I go about finding this information? Apologies if this is the wrong subreddit, I really was not sure where to post this.

Suppose that I'm a British soldier on the western front of WWI. I'm doing my third two-week long "tour" in the front-line trenches of a hot zone, and I'm done with it. Maybe I speak a little bit of German, or maybe I don't care if I don't; I'll take my chances. I want to surrender/desert/defect.

How would I make my way over to the German lines without being shot to pieces the second I stick my head above the trench wall? Was such a thing even possible?

The question occurred to me because I recently read an account of a Russian officer surrendering to the Germans (I know the eastern front was a different animal), and from what I understand there was some degree of fraternization that occurred on the western, particularly between the Germans and the British (the Germans and French had a more personal beef).

In Historia Ecclesiastica Beda mentions very often that certain people celebrate Easter at the wrong time. Not just that, but also that having Easter at the wrong time was a severe sin, and it almost seems like some people were invalidated as good Christians simply because they didn't have Easter at the right time.

How widely varied were observances of Easter? Was it two competing "sides", or was there the right side and many unrelated wrong ones? What made Beda's time for Easter right and others' wrong?

I mean, were any of the major pirates like Blackbeard, Captain Morgan or Captain Kidd greatly influenced by or morally conflicted by personal Christian beliefs?

So I've been flicking through the relevant sections of Dark Age Economics: the origins of towns and trade AD 600 - 1000 by Richard Hodges all day and it's just way too dense. My mind is mush and I've only been able to gleam the definitions that archaeologists give to determine what a town is (page 21) and that the Viking raids from 840-870 forced the need for "centralised leadership" and that burhs were a military strategy to quell the Vikings (page 159).

I've read about the devastation caused by the bombing of cities like London, Berlin, and Tokyo in World War II. I don't, however, recall reading about any top government or military officials being killed as a result of these raids.

It is well-known that the role of the alchemist was to transfer base metals into gold. But how were the metals procured in the first place? Were they bought from a merchant? From the local market?

Was the trade of raw goods in the ancient world typically conducted in a face-to-face manner? Was there ever a middleman?

Finally, do you know of any interesting books or articles pertaining to this subject?

How is it that structures like St. Mark's Cathedral in Venice or the Colosseum in Rome built literally over a thousand years ago were such amazing feats of architecture and in North America they were barely making mud huts (that I'm aware of). I've always been really curious of this.

I understand that a lot of things may factor into this but what is this gap in the building of structures primarily due to? Had people just been in and around Europe a lot longer than in North America? I don't know much about this but I've always wondered.

EDIT: Since one reply to me said that my post was liable to bring accusations that I am racist let me elaborate a bit: I am definitely not racist, I grew up in Flagstaff, Arizona and went to places such as Wupatki. Recently having been to St Mark's Cathedral I was astonished to learn when it was constructed.

I, since then, have been generally curious to see what was being constructed in what is now the United States and Europe 1000 years ago. I feel when comparing the two, for the most part, my question is certainly reasonable.

I'm sure this has been asked before, but it's strangely difficult to find good work on the transition periods between historic eras - ie the experience of people during the decline of Rome, or the beginning of the end of feudalism. These are the messy periods of history where little synthesis exists, but surely someone must have at least collected primary sources from individuals who realized that something big was happening, and in hindsight they were witnessing the birth of the Arabic Golden Age or the Industrial Revolution, etc.

Any leads greatly appreciated!
