To clarify... the Roman Empire encompassed the entire Mediterranean at it's peak, and most of northern Europe to boot. Their influence was so pervasive for so long that no less than three modern languages outside of Italy are deeply rooted in Latin.

And they controlled Greece. Not only did the Romans control Greece, they turned the city of Byzantium into a second capital - Constantinople! Further, this part of the Empire far outlived the Rome of Italy, remaining the seat of the Roman emperor for a thousand years after the Western Empire collapsed.

And yet... the Greek language remained Greek.

Why?

I'm trying to figure out if there were any violent revolutions in the late 20th century? So far the only thing I can find close to such an event would be the Guatemalan Civil War. Of course, there's also the Vietnam War, but i'm looking for the more obscure ones, and sort of constricted to a specific region. In particular, any violent revolutions in eastern European and western Asian countries are what i'm specifically looking for, but if there's any other notable revolutions that i'm not aware of, i'd love to learn.

Hey guys, the other day I was in my history seminar class which is on the fall of the Roman Empire. So the subject of welfare came up in class and how some of the emperors gave welfare to their people. So I figured I should probably write my paper on that since everyone is probably going to be doing it on Christianity or one of the other subjects that has been done countless amount of times. My teacher says that there is plenty of info on the welfare system of Ancient Rome but I am having a hard time finding these sources that talk about the subject. Do you guys have any idea where to find good reads or have suggestions? Or am I over my head on the subject?

In the time of the Roman Republic or Empire did women fight gladiatrix battles? Did they fight animals?

Mecca was for a long time a place where many different people lived, even during The Prophets time. Medina as well. Were these cities blocked off to non-Muslims after Muhammad's death, or was it something enacted during his lifetime? Also, is it a Quranic ruling or is it something decided on by leaders/population.

Need some assistance identifying the types of tanks likely seen at Nijmegen during Operation Market Garden!

Taking part in a historical wargame representing the battle, and wondering what tanks would be historically appropriate to use.

Given my prerogative to use Grenadier Guards, one of the chaps in the group suggested my sole reserve should be Shermans - I'd prefer to use British tanks if possible, such as Cromwells, but reading material is proving elusive.
