After watching today's front page video about a historian that discussed the appearance and buildings of Rome, I wondered about what it would actually be like to visit Rome and, of all things, visit the Emperor.

This made me think - are there letters, journals, or documents that detail a person's trip to see Caesar? This person would likely be a soldier, politician, dignitary, or entrepreneur. Of all the guests the Emperors entertained, surely a few recorded their experience in detail!

This is merely an intellectual curiosity. If anyone knows of sources, books, etc. I'd greatly appreciate the information.

The Constitution creates the fundamental framework for the national government, which makes me wonder why the 18th Amendment ended up in the Constitution in the first place. Alcohol prohibition seems like a lower-level issue than those listed in the Constitution, and, for example, the Controlled Substances Act plays a similar role for a variety of other drugs and didn't require a constitutional amendment.

I was wondering about this recently, about how most legal systems allow for a panel of randomly selected citizens to make decisions of fact in criminal or civil trials. I want to know why juries started coming into use and why they're considered a right of the accused in many countries nowadays.

I read up a bit on wikipedia, but it mostly detailed the workings of early juries, but not how or why they started to come into use.

I've always read that the Normans introduced feudalism to England, but it seems like the structure of government at the time was already pretty feudal. What was feudalism like in England before the Norman Conquest? What distinguished it from the government established by the Normans?

Hi there, I currently teach at a boarding school and my schedule is demanding from September-May. I am hoping to go for my master's in history, but with my current schedule (coaching, teaching five classes, dorm life, advisory) there is just no way I could meet my job expectations and academic expectations. Does anyone know of any universities that offer summer programs for teachers or professionals in my position? I know that they celebrate ANZAC day there instead of the war being over and that it's gained importance in their culture, but what about this campaign made it so important?

My history teacher said that there's only one monopoly in the history of the USA that was a result of "free market" and not somehow affected by the powers of the government. He also said that the company was not just in the US.

I saw a video recently that stipulated that bayonet charges usually happened after only a few volleys and typically resulted in the recipient of the charge conceding its position rather than engaging in a melee. Is this true? If so, did a bayonet charge ever result in a melee or did one side always flee?
