Was their failure more up to their political system, or just Russia's natural resources and geography? What were some of the flashpoints during the cold war in which Russia lost due to poor leadership and not due to it's inherent disadvantages?

As in, how advanced were the Romans/Greeks/Egyptians at their height compared to the Chinese during the same time period.

Hi! I would be very happy to get suggestions on a book on the history of Rome that gives a good picture of the life in Rome as well as it's conquests & failures that would be an entertaining read.

I'm not very well read on Rome....well....honestly, I'm not very well read period....I don't read a lot when it comes to books. I have tried reading the History of Rome by Livy and to be honest, I can't do it. It's took dry. I've attempted it twice and never get beyond the first part of the book.

So, if you have something you can suggest, that would be great.

Hi! This is my first time posting in this subreddit and tried searching for a similar question. I couldn't find one, so I hope this hasn't been answered yet!

I've been doing a lot of leisure reading (aka reddit lurking) on the Koreas lately and most of the reddit posts I've come across revolve around the Japanese occupation, the Korean War, and the split.

Just curious - what was Korea like before the Japanese came in? Were they ever a unified country with just one ruler? What was their culture like? Were they ever a peaceful country?

Conversely: why has calling Asians "yellow" fallen out of favor, when "black" and "white" are still going strong? Even "brown" is thrown around quite a bit.

Just saw a post that Japan considered using bio weapons and I realized I do not know a legit case where bio weapons have been used. I mean I know examples for nuclear weapons (Japan) and chemical weapons (Vietnam) but cannot recall any for bio weapons.

Imperator starts out as a person with authority to command troops. Did it become the title of absolute monarch we come to associate with "Emperor"? How did the change come about?

I get that the press didn't cover JFK's affairs out of respect for the office, and I get that it wasn't that unexpected back then, but there's one thing that I can't figure out. How did he meet the women that he would bring into the White House? If he was hitting on a girl at a party, wouldn't everyone notice since he was the POTUS? Did he have handlers find women? Was it from women that he met before he became famous? Were they prostitutes?

Two more follow up questions:

1. How did he get them into the White House without Jackie or the kids noticing? Did it only happen when she was out of town? Did he go somewhere else? If so, where could he go without anyone noticing?

2. How many women did he sleep with over the course of his presidency? Was it just a rotation of a few women, was it hundreds?

Pretty much all in the title. When did we first get the suspicion "Hmm, this one might just be the biggest that there is!", and when did we become sure that it truly was the biggest?

So I'm requesting information on paganism during the biblical times. Now I'm well aware that the term "pagan" is very broad classification. I'm also aware and done research on the Greek Gods. I'm specifically requesting information regarding the pagans that didn't practice the mainstream Paganism with Zeus. As a Christian I want to have a better understanding of what the disciples and people of that time had to deal with. I know the bible talks about paganism, but I feel like if I understood the actual traditions/beliefs then I could get a clearer pictures. Is there any early writings around the bible time regarding this?
