What defences did the Enola Gay have for the dropping of the atomic bomb?

The distance it had to travel surely ruled out fighter escort, and however weak Japanese air defences were, a group of fighters would bring down a B-29? Was it just it's altitude and speed?

Did Russia impose grammatical changes on East Germans?

I was learning about prepositions in my German class the other day, and it pointed out that you use two different prepositions for "enclosed places" like a bank, and "public places" like a post office. My question is did the communist government of East Germany try to force grammar changes based on political beliefs?

Was there an orthodox effort to convert Scandinavia or did only Catholic Europeans attempt to convert the Vikings?

Seeing as how Greek and Southern European missionaries went north to Russia and spread their faith there, and considering the cultural contacts between the (eastern) Norse people and east Europeans and Byzantines, where there ever any attempts by Greek or other people to convert the Vikings to orthodoxy?

Can someone tell me about the history surrounding this ring which belonged to my late grandfather?

Image: http://imgur.com/5U4CqFt

I have had this ring for about 3 years now following the death of my grandfather. I was always intrigued by it for many years. The back story of how it came into his possession is about 50 years ago when building the docks in my City he dug it out of the ground and had kept it since. He then passed it on to me just before his death. I'm not concerned as to how much it's worth as it is priceless for me but I would like to know anything/everything about it. Thanks for your help!

It's often said WW1 was unavoidable. Did people at the time know this, and what did they think the sides would be

Popular theory is that due to the alliance system etc Europe was on a path to a massive war in the early 20th century and even if Archduke Ferdinand hadn't been assassinated something would have lit the touchpaper.

Did people at the time feel that a new war was a foregone conclusion? And did the way the alliances were structured mean that the two sides were always going to be UK/France/Russia/USA v Germany/AustriaHungary/Ottomans?

Looking for books on the Vietnam War

I'm looking for books on the vietnam war, especially with analysis

So if for example the author says one of the reasons for the defeat of the US was that they lacked experts on asia/vietnam due to the McCarthy era, then he should mention statistic about how many people were dismissed or at least cite experiences or quotes of relevant people living during the time. Basically my point is that i would like the reasons for his assessment to be comprehensible to the reader.

It doesn't matter whether the book covers the whole war or just some aspect of it or if it is rly a book or some other resource (paper etc.).

Were Werner Heisenberg's nuclear capabilities overestimated?

I have just watched "the Heavy Water Wars" - a Norwegian/German/British story based around events at Norsk Hydro in WWII. I have read this article what if Werner Heisenberg had been a nazi and briefly read his bio and some of his published works. I don't have an extensive knowledge of WWII events other than the most prominent and undisputed; but with the series and the article which questions Heisenberg's apparent genius, I'm not sure where to search for more of the truth.

Is this a case where actually learning more about quantum physics, nazi programmes, the Manhattan Project and other scientifically verifiable work will ultimately uncover Heisenberg's actions as killing nuclear weaponisation or his ineptitude? Or is there proof to credit him with actions that saved the world from a nuclear nazi state?

Thank you in advance for any guidance you mavens can offer :)

What groups colonized the Jalisco region of Mexico?

Background info that lead me to this question: My mother is a fair skinned Mexican from Guadalajara, my father is a darker skinned man from San Julian. Both sides of the family have relatives who are light skinned or have colored eyes. I've been told one of my relatives had orange hair when he was younger. I'm caramel skinned with brown eyes and dark brown hair, yet my facial hair is growing bright orange.

Question: What groups that colonized/settled in the Jalisco area of Mexico could have contributed to my orange facial hair?
